Chapter 9 - THE TRUTH BEFORE THE JUDGE

The courtroom was packed by the time Dominic arrived.

Reporters had gathered outside, drawn by rumors of fraud, a missing heiress, and the collapse of one of Chicago's most powerful families.

Dominic ignored them.

He wore a simple dark suit and carried no visible sign of the empire his father had built. For once, he wanted the court to see him as a husband who had failed to protect his wife and a father who was trying to protect his child.

Daniel and Rebecca Bennett sat beside their attorney.

Rebecca held Lily in her arms.

The little girl had Isabella's dark eyes and a small dimple in her left cheek. Dominic had seen that dimple in every photograph of his wife as a child.

He had to look away.

Victor entered with two lawyers and a confident smile.

“Dominic,” he said quietly. “This doesn't have to become ugly.”

“You made it ugly when you stole my daughter.”

Victor's expression hardened.

“She was placed with a suitable family. I did what was necessary.”

“You forged medical records, falsified consent, and concealed a child from her father.”

“I protected the family.”

Dominic leaned closer.

“You keep using that word as if it excuses everything.”

The hearing began.

Victor's attorney argued that Lily's identity should remain sealed and that Dominic's criminal associations made him an unsuitable guardian.

Dominic's attorney presented the medical records, the financial transfers, Dr. Hale's testimony, and Vanessa's recorded confession.

Then Margaret took the stand.

She described Isabella's work with the foundation and her determination to protect vulnerable women and children from people who used wealth to control them.

“She wanted her daughter to grow up knowing that kindness wasn't weakness,” Margaret said. “She believed the Moretti name could mean something better than fear.”

Next came Emily.

She walked carefully to the witness stand, one hand resting on her pregnant belly.

Victor's lawyer attempted to discredit her, emphasizing her employment as a maid and the financial assistance Isabella had provided.

Emily remained composed.

“Mrs. Moretti helped me because I needed help. She never asked me to lie, steal, or betray anyone. She trusted me because she believed I would tell the truth even when it frightened me.”

“And you waited eighteen months to deliver the letter?”

“Yes.”

“Because you hoped to receive money from Mr. Moretti?”

Emily's face flushed.

“No. Because I was afraid of losing my job, my home, and my baby. Vanessa Sterling threatened me. But I came forward because Mrs. Moretti deserved the truth.”

The courtroom fell silent.

Then Emily looked directly at Victor.

“Your family gave me a place to sleep, but Mrs. Moretti gave me a reason to believe I mattered. You tried to make me feel small enough to disappear. You were wrong.”

Dominic lowered his head, moved by her courage.

The final witness was Dr. Hale.

Under questioning, he admitted that Victor had pressured him to alter Isabella's records and authorize the baby's transfer. He also confirmed that Isabella had not consented to the final surgery.

Victor's confidence began to crumble.

His attorney requested a recess.

When the hearing resumed, the judge announced that the evidence supported an investigation into medical fraud, unlawful transfer of a child, and the falsification of legal documents.

The court denied Victor's request for immediate custody of Lily and ordered the child to remain with the Bennetts while the family court reviewed the long-term arrangement.

Dominic felt relief, but it wasn't victory.

He turned toward Rebecca.

“I won't fight you for the sake of winning,” he said. “Lily deserves stability. If you are willing, I'd like to know her. Slowly. With your permission and the court's guidance.”

Rebecca studied him.

“You could make this difficult.”

“I could. But that would make me no better than my father.”

After a long silence, Rebecca nodded.

“We'll consider supervised visits.”

Dominic thanked her.

Outside the courtroom, Victor was escorted away by investigators. Salvatore had agreed to cooperate in exchange for consideration in his own case, and Vanessa had provided evidence that helped uncover the wider scheme.

As Dominic watched his father disappear down the corridor, he felt no triumph.

Only grief.

Grief for Isabella, for the years they had lost, and for the family they might have been.

His phone rang.

It was Emily's doctor.

“Mr. Moretti, Emily has gone into labor.”

Dominic froze.

“She isn't due for another two months.”

“The baby is coming early. We're taking every precaution.”

Dominic rushed to the hospital.

When he arrived, Emily was being wheeled toward the delivery unit. She reached for his hand.

“Please don't let my baby be alone.”

Dominic squeezed her fingers.

“You won't be alone. Neither of you will.”

The doors closed.

He stood in the corridor beneath harsh fluorescent lights, staring at the same kind of hospital doors behind which Isabella had died.

For eighteen months, he had believed he could never feel hope in a hospital again.

Now he prayed for a child he had never met.

Hours later, a nurse emerged.

“Mr. Moretti?”

Dominic stood.

“The baby is alive. She's small, but she's breathing on her own with medical support.”

His knees nearly gave way.

“And Emily?”

“She is stable. She's asking for you.”

Dominic entered the room.

Emily lay exhausted but smiling, with tears on her cheeks.

A nurse brought over a tiny bundle.

“Would you like to meet your daughter?”

Dominic looked at Emily.

She nodded.

He took the baby into his arms.

For the first time in years, the powerful mafia boss had nothing to say.

Then Emily whispered, “She needs a name.”

Dominic looked down at the sleeping child.

“Isabella,” he said softly. “If you want to.”

Emily's eyes filled with tears.

“I'd be honored.”

He kissed the baby's forehead.

Outside the window, snow was beginning to melt.

For the first time since his wife's death, Dominic believed the future might hold something other than loss.

But when his attorney entered the room, his expression was grave.

“Dominic, the investigation has uncovered one final document. It changes what we know about your father's empire.”

Dominic looked up.

“What document?”

The attorney placed a sealed envelope on the bedside table.

On the front, in Isabella's handwriting, were six words:

For Dominic, when he is finally ready.
