Chapter 8

THE BETRAYAL INSIDE THE HOUSE

Dominic pulled Elena behind the bed and drew his weapon. Gabriel crouched beside the door, listening as footsteps moved down the hall.

“Marco?” Dominic called. “Give me the security phrase.”

Silence.

The security phrase was a three-word challenge known only to Dominic’s inner circle. Marco had used it for years. If the man outside could not answer, he was either compromised or dead.

A burst of gunfire tore through the doorframe. Dominic fired back, forcing the attackers to retreat. Gabriel dragged a cabinet across the doorway while Elena pressed a hand over her mouth to keep from crying out.

“Back stairs,” Gabriel said. “Now.”

They moved through a service corridor as alarms began to ring. At the end, a nurse unlocked a fire exit and pointed toward the tree line. Dominic helped his mother down the steps. Gabriel covered them until they reached the cars.

Marco was waiting beside the lead vehicle, holding a gun.

Dominic aimed at him. “Drop it.”

Marco’s face was pale. “Boss, listen to me. They have my daughter.”

The gun in Dominic’s hand did not lower. “You brought them here.”

“They said they’d kill her if I didn’t. I sent them the clinic’s location, but I didn’t know they’d attack. I came to get you out.”

“You could have told me.”

“They showed me a video of her tied up. I thought if I cooperated, I could keep her alive.”

Gabriel stepped forward. “Where is she?”

“An abandoned school in Chester. They said to bring the original annex there before midnight.”

Dominic studied the man who had guarded his back for fifteen years. He wanted to see a liar. Instead, he saw a terrified father who had made a terrible choice.

“Give me your weapon,” Dominic said.

Marco obeyed.

“You’re going to help us get your daughter back. But if you hide one more thing, I won’t be able to protect you from what comes next.”

They drove to the safe house, where Emily had been moved to a secured bedroom. When she saw Elena enter, she rose carefully and offered the older woman her chair.

“You must be exhausted,” Emily said.

Elena took her hand. “You protected my sons when you had every reason to run. I will never forget that.”

Dominic watched them, feeling a tenderness he had not allowed himself in years. Emily had no army, no money, no influence. She had simply chosen to do the right thing when powerful people expected her to be afraid.

Vanessa arrived shortly afterward, having slipped away from the mansion with a small bag of documents. She gave Dominic her father’s private account book and a list of coded payments.

“I found it in his study,” she said. “He was preparing to leave the country.”

The account book linked Robert Sterling to a private security company, and that company’s owner was listed as a woman named Catherine Vale. The same name appeared on the clinic’s visitor log and in the records of the sealed casket transport.

Gabriel stared at the name. “Catherine Vale was our father’s half sister.”

Dominic felt another piece of the past snap into place. Their aunt had attended the funeral, embraced them both, and promised she would always protect the family. She had been wearing the signet ring in Elena’s photograph.

“She’s Shepherd,” he said.

Vanessa nodded. “My father worked for her. Voss handled the money, but Catherine gave the orders. She wanted control of the Moretti businesses after your father died. Gabriel found the proof, so she made him disappear. When he survived, she used the fake funeral to keep everyone convinced he was dead.”

“Why keep our mother alive?” Dominic asked.

“Leverage,” Elena replied. “Catherine believed your father had hidden the original ownership documents somewhere only I could find. She kept me alive because she thought I would eventually tell her.”

Dominic looked at the clock. They had less than two hours before midnight.

The team prepared for the abandoned school. Marco would guide them through the service entrance. Vanessa would use her father’s access code to disable the outer alarm. Gabriel would carry a decoy file while Dominic kept the true annex secured.

Before they left, Emily took Dominic aside.

“You don’t have to become the man you were before all this,” she said quietly.

He looked at her. “What man was that?”

“The one who thought being feared was the same as being safe.”

He absorbed the words, then gently touched her cheek. “I’m trying to learn the difference.”

At the school, they found Marco’s daughter in a classroom, frightened but unharmed. Dominic’s team extracted her while Gabriel located the server room. But Catherine had anticipated the rescue. The building’s doors slammed shut, and red lights flashed along the corridor.

A speaker clicked on.

Catherine Vale’s voice was warm, almost affectionate.

“Dominic, you always did make things difficult. Since you’ve brought the whole family together, I suppose there’s no reason to keep pretending.”

A monitor flickered to life, showing a live image of Elena at the safe house.

Catherine continued, “Give me the annex, or I will finish what I started twelve years ago.”

The screen changed.

Emily appeared beside Elena, one hand pressed to her stomach. A guard stood behind her with a gun.
