Chapter 9 - THE MAN WHO OWNED THE OTHER HALF

Dominic didn't go to Daniel Cross alone.

He took Marco, two trusted men, and a small recording device hidden inside his jacket. Vanessa insisted on joining them, carrying the locket and the letters from her father's safe.

The meeting was arranged at an abandoned hotel near Lake Michigan.

Daniel stood in the ballroom beneath a chandelier covered in dust. He wore an immaculate navy suit, his hands folded behind his back.

"You came," he said.

"Where's Lily?"

"Safe."

"Bring her out."

Daniel shook his head.

"Not until you understand why I brought you here."

Dominic stepped closer.

"You have thirty seconds."

Daniel smiled.

"Your grandfather had three sons. Vincent, Edward, and Michael. Michael was the firstborn. He was the one who inherited the family's original holdings, but he disappeared after a dispute over a child."

Dominic's eyes narrowed.

"Who was the child?"

"Me."

The room fell silent.

Daniel explained that Michael Moretti had escaped the family in the late seventies and started a new life under a different name. His son, Daniel, grew up believing his father had abandoned him.

Years later, he discovered the truth.

The Moretti family had erased Michael from its records, transferred his inheritance to Vincent, and declared him dead. Michael died before he could reclaim anything.

Daniel had spent decades gathering evidence.

"I didn't come for your money," he said. "I came for what was stolen from my father."

"Then why take Lily?"

"Because she is the only person who can prove the bloodline was altered."

Dominic stared at him.

"Lily is Edward's granddaughter."

Daniel shook his head.

"That's what the records say. But your mother's letter tells another story."

He produced a document from his briefcase.

It was a medical report signed by Dr. Whitaker.

The report stated that the baby believed to be Edward's daughter had been exchanged with another infant shortly after birth. One child had been sent to the family Catherine trusted. The other had remained under the care of a nurse connected to Michael Moretti.

The exchange had been arranged to protect both children from Vincent.

Dominic felt his thoughts race.

"Which child was Lily?"

Daniel looked toward the ballroom doors.

"That's what we need to establish."

A door opened.

Lily entered with a woman in her sixties.

The woman had dark eyes, a narrow face, and a faint scar near her hairline. She looked at Dominic with a mixture of fear and recognition.

"This is Dr. Whitaker's daughter, Susan," Daniel said. "She has the original records."

Susan held a sealed envelope.

"My father spent the last years of his life trying to correct what he had done. He told me two girls were switched, but he never revealed their real identities."

Dominic took the envelope.

Inside were two birth certificates.

One belonged to Elena Marie Moretti.

The other belonged to Vanessa Catherine Sterling.

Both had been altered.

The original documents revealed that Vanessa had been born to Catherine and Richard Sterling. Lily's mother, Elena, had been Edward's daughter, exactly as the family had believed.

But the second page contained a handwritten note from Catherine.

The child who carries the true Moretti inheritance is neither the girl Vincent raised nor the girl Edward lost. It is the child who has lived without our name.

Dominic looked at Lily.

"What does that mean?"

Susan shook her head.

"My father believed it referred to a third child. But he never found her."

Daniel stepped forward.

"The family had a third baby that night. A boy. He was born to Michael's wife, who died during the escape."

Dominic stared.

"You're saying my grandfather had another grandchild?"

Daniel nodded.

"My father believed the boy was taken away by someone inside the family. He spent his life looking for him."

"Why?"

"Because the boy was the only heir whose identity couldn't be manipulated. He was born outside the Moretti estate, and his birth was witnessed by people who weren't loyal to Vincent."

Dominic felt the old mystery expand into something much darker.

"Where is he?"

Daniel looked at Vanessa.

"That's what the wedding dress was meant to reveal."

Vanessa opened the locket and examined the tiny photograph again.

Then she noticed something she had missed before.

The woman holding the two babies wore a wedding ring.

Not Catherine's.

A different ring, engraved with a symbol Dominic recognized from the Moretti family's oldest documents.

The symbol of the firstborn.

Vanessa turned the photograph over.

There were faint letters beneath the engraving.

M.C. — SEPTEMBER 18, 1986.

Daniel went pale.

"My father said those initials belonged to Michael's wife."

"Who was she?" Dominic asked.

Daniel swallowed.

"Mary Catherine Cross."

The name meant nothing to Dominic.

But Lily suddenly covered her mouth.

"My mother had a sister named Mary."

Everyone turned toward her.

Lily's voice trembled.

"She disappeared before I was born. My mother said she left Chicago after a family argument. She never spoke about her again."

Dominic stepped closer.

"Did your mother have any photographs of her?"

"One. It was always locked in a drawer."

Lily looked at Daniel.

"You're saying my mother's sister may have been Michael Moretti's wife?"

Daniel nodded slowly.

"And if she was, then the missing boy could be your cousin."

A sound came from the hallway.

Footsteps.

Marco raised his weapon.

The ballroom doors burst open.

Vincent entered with four armed men.

Behind him stood a woman none of them recognized.

She was in her late thirties, wearing a black coat, with dark hair and eyes that seemed painfully familiar.

She looked directly at Dominic.

Then at Lily.

Then at Vanessa.

"My name is Catherine Moretti Cross," she said.

Dominic felt the world stop.

"My mother was Catherine Moretti."

The woman shook her head.

"Your mother was Catherine Moretti. I am her daughter."

Vanessa stumbled backward.

"That's impossible."

The woman held up a photograph of Catherine standing beside three newborn babies.

"Your mother gave birth to twins before she married Vincent. One girl was raised by the Sterlings. The other was sent away. The boy was hidden by Michael."

She looked at Lily.

"And you, Lily, are the only person who can prove which of us was switched."

Vincent raised his gun.

"Nobody leaves this room."

Dominic moved in front of Lily.

"You don't get to decide that anymore."

Vincent's hand shook.

For the first time in Dominic's life, his father looked afraid.

Not of the police.

Not of his enemies.

But of the woman standing in the doorway.

Because she was carrying a document that could prove Vincent Moretti had built his empire on the murder of his own family.

And she had come to claim it all.
