Chapter 10 - THE FAMILY THAT ROSE FROM THE ASHESFor several seconds, nobody moved.

Lorenzo stared at the woman standing in the doorway.
She looked older than the photographs.
Her hair was almost completely silver, and a long scar crossed her cheek.
But her eyes were unmistakable.
"Mother?"
The woman looked at him.
Then at Nicholas.
Her expression softened.
"My grandson."
Meline pulled Nicholas behind her.
"Who are you?"
The woman raised both hands.
"My name is Eleanor Moretti."
Lorenzo struggled to stand.
"You died."
Eleanor's eyes filled.
"I know."
He stared at her.
"You let us bury you."
"I had no choice."
"Mateo murdered you."
"No."
Her gaze shifted toward the dark doorway.
"Mateo tried."
She explained that the night of her supposed death, she had discovered that Richard Croft planned to eliminate everyone who knew about the hidden financial network.
Her husband had already been killed.
Isabella had escaped the fire.
Mateo had disappeared.
And Lorenzo was next.
Eleanor had staged her own death with help from a trusted physician.
She had escaped overseas and spent years collecting evidence.
But she had made one terrible mistake.
She had believed Mateo would eventually stop.
Instead, he had taken Meline and Nicholas.
"I watched from a distance," Eleanor whispered. "I knew where they were. I knew what he was doing."
Lorenzo's voice cracked.
"Then why didn't you save them?"
Eleanor lowered her eyes.
"Because Richard had threatened to expose the entire family. If I moved too soon, he would have killed everyone."
Lorenzo looked at the blood spreading across his shirt.
"Your protection cost us three years."
"I know."
"Your silence cost Meline her life."
Eleanor began crying.
"I know."
For the first time in his life, Lorenzo saw his mother without the image of perfection he had carried since childhood.
She was frightened.
She was guilty.
And she was human.
David approached.
"Boss, we need medical attention now."
Lorenzo looked toward the hidden doorway.
"Mateo?"
"Two men found a vehicle leaving the rear property. We're following it."
Lorenzo tried to move.
His legs gave way.
Meline caught him.
"Stay with me."
He looked at her.
"Get Nicholas somewhere safe."
"No."
"Maddie—"
"I am not leaving you."
She pressed both hands against his wound.
"Not again."
David called for an ambulance.
Within minutes, the estate filled with paramedics and armed security.
Nicholas clung to Meline's coat.
He refused to let anyone separate them.
When the ambulance doors closed, Lorenzo reached for his son's hand.
Nicholas took it.
"Are you going to sleep, Daddy?"
Lorenzo smiled weakly.
"Just for a little while."
"Will you come back?"
"I promise."
Nicholas leaned forward and kissed his father's hand.
Meline looked away, unable to stop crying.
The operation lasted four hours.
The bullet had passed dangerously close to Lorenzo's liver, but the surgeons managed to stabilize him.
When he finally opened his eyes, Meline was sitting beside his bed.
Her head rested against the mattress.
Nicholas slept in a small chair nearby.
Lorenzo moved his fingers.
Meline woke immediately.
"You're awake."
He smiled.
"Where's my family?"
She took his hand.
"Right here."
For the first time in three years, he could look at his wife without seeing fear in her eyes.
The weeks that followed changed everything.
Isabella received treatment from an independent medical team. Her condition improved after doctors discovered the true source of her illness and removed the remaining toxin exposure.
Richard Croft was arrested after the authorities obtained the financial records, hospital documents, and recordings recovered from the Newport estate.
Dr. Hargrove survived his injuries and agreed to testify.
Eleanor surrendered herself to investigators.
She provided the remaining evidence against the people involved in her husband's murder and accepted responsibility for concealing the truth.
Mateo, however, remained missing.
His vehicle had been found abandoned near the harbor.
There was blood on the driver's seat.
But no body.
Lorenzo didn't waste his recovery trying to hunt him down.
He had spent too much of his life allowing revenge to decide what happened next.
Instead, he began dismantling the criminal operations his father had built.
He transferred legitimate businesses into a new holding company and established a foundation to support families affected by organized crime.
He also gave Nicholas something he had never been able to give himself.
A childhood without fear.
Six weeks after the shooting, Lorenzo brought Meline and Nicholas to the little house where they had once lived before the Moretti family became consumed by violence.
The kitchen still had the old wooden table.
Meline's favorite blue mug was still in the cupboard.
Lorenzo had kept it for three years.
Nicholas ran through the living room, laughing.
"Mommy! Daddy! Look!"
He held up a drawing.
Three people stood beneath a yellow sun.
A little boy in the middle held the hands of a man and a woman.
Above them, in crooked letters, he had written:
MY FAMILY.
Meline pressed the paper against her chest.
Lorenzo wrapped his arms around her.
"Do you think we can start again?" he whispered.
She looked at him.
"Not where we left off."
He nodded.
"Then where?"
"Somewhere new."
He kissed her forehead.
For the first time, she didn't hide her left arm.
The scar remained.
So did the distorted serpent emblem.
But she no longer needed to cover it.
That evening, after Nicholas fell asleep, Lorenzo found Meline standing in the garden.
He approached quietly.
"What's wrong?"
She looked toward the dark ocean.
"Your mother gave me something before she left."
Lorenzo frowned.
"What?"
Meline reached into her pocket and handed him a small envelope.
Inside was a photograph.
It showed Eleanor standing beside Lorenzo's father.
But there was another person in the background.
A young boy.
Lorenzo turned the photograph over.
On the back, his father's handwriting read:
THE FOURTH CHILD. THE ONE WE NEVER FOUND.
Lorenzo stared at the words.
"What is this?"
Meline shook her head.
"I don't know."
He looked again at the photograph.
The boy had the Moretti family's unmistakable gray eyes.
And beneath the photograph was a second note.
IF MATEO RETURNS, DON'T TRUST THE PERSON WHO COMES WITH HIM.
Before Lorenzo could ask another question, his phone vibrated.
An unknown number.
One message.
YOUR BROTHER IS ALIVE. AND HE IS NOT THE ONE YOU SHOULD BE AFRAID OF.
Lorenzo looked toward the dark ocean.
Then at his wife.
Three years ago, he had found the woman he thought he had buried.
Now he had found his family.
May you like
But somewhere beyond the horizon, another secret was waiting.
And this time, Lorenzo knew that the greatest betrayal might come from someone he hadn't even met yet.
