Chapter 9 - The Man Behind the Betrayal

Tony turned toward Dominic.

For several seconds, neither man spoke.

Dominic looked at the photograph, then lowered his eyes.

"Boss, I can explain."

Tony's voice was quiet.

"You'd better."

Victor laughed.

"Dominic has been working for me for years. He gave me access to your security systems, your financial records, and your private investigations."

Clara looked at Dominic in disbelief.

The man who had helped rescue her had been involved in the conspiracy?

Dominic shook his head.

"Not anymore."

Victor's expression tightened.

"What?"

Dominic removed a small device from his coat.

"Every conversation in this building has been recorded."

Gambino lunged toward him.

Two security men intercepted the loan shark.

Tony did not move.

"How long?"

Dominic looked at him.

"Three years."

"Why?"

Dominic's face was filled with shame.

"My younger brother owed Victor money. They threatened his family. I gave them information to keep him alive."

Tony's jaw tightened.

"You endangered my people."

"I know."

"You helped them target Clara."

Dominic shook his head.

"I gave them the warehouse location, but I didn't know they had her. When I found out, I came to you."

Tony stared at him.

"That doesn't make you innocent."

"No, sir."

Victor attempted to leave.

Dominic stepped aside just enough to reveal the security team blocking the exit.

"You aren't going anywhere."

Victor's confidence finally disappeared.

"You think you can arrest me? I have judges, bankers, senators—"

"And recordings," Dominic interrupted.

He placed the device on the table.

"Every transfer. Every threat. Every instruction you gave Gambino."

Victor lunged for it.

Tony stopped him.

"Not another step."

Victor looked at Tony with contempt.

"Your father was weak. He wanted power without understanding the cost. I helped him build it."

"Did you order Isabella's death?"

Victor smiled.

"Your father arranged it. I handled the cleanup."

Tony felt the room close around him.

"And my mother?"

Victor's smile disappeared.

"She knew too much, too."

Tony stepped closer.

"What happened to her?"

Victor said nothing.

Clara suddenly remembered the letter.

There had been another sentence, almost hidden beneath the handwriting.

If Isabella cannot be saved, protect the woman who raised her.

Clara looked at Victor.

"You killed Tony's mother, too."

Victor's silence was answer enough.

Tony turned away.

For years, he had believed his mother died from a sudden illness. He had been seventeen, powerless, and surrounded by adults who told him not to ask questions.

Now he understood why his father had forbidden anyone from discussing her final days.

Dominic handed the recordings to the authorities who had been waiting outside the warehouse.

Gambino was arrested. Victor was taken into custody on charges connected to the kidnapping, financial fraud, conspiracy, and the investigation into Isabella's death.

Lana was arrested at the airport while attempting to board a private flight.

Mrs. Gable agreed to provide a full statement about the Christmas Eve incident.

But Tony wasn't finished.

He returned to Aspen with Clara and Arthur.

The old Christmas tree had been moved into storage years earlier. Its wooden base was locked inside a cabinet.

Tony found the key.

Clara knelt beside him.

Together, they opened the base.

Inside was a sealed metal container.

The original ledger lay beneath a photograph of Isabella and Clara's mother.

There was also a handwritten letter.

Tony unfolded it.

The first line was addressed to him.

Tony, if you're reading this, then your father was not the only person who betrayed you.

His eyes moved down the page.

The letter described the financial conspiracy, the sabotage of Isabella's car, and the people who had helped conceal the evidence.

Then he reached the final paragraph.

There is one person you must never trust. He has been beside you since childhood. He knows what happened to your mother. And he has been waiting for the right moment to take everything from you.

Tony looked up.

Arthur was standing in the doorway.

His face had gone completely white.

"Clara," he whispered.

She turned.

"What?"

Arthur pointed at the letter.

"There's a second page."

Tony searched the container.

It was empty.

Then Arthur said something that made Clara's blood run cold.

"I know who that person is."
