Chapter 1 - THE MAFIA BOSS FOUND HIS MAID HOLDING A WEDDING CAKE WITH A BLACK RIBBON—THEN HIS FIANCÉE SCREAMED, “WHO SENT THAT?”

**“WHO SENT THAT CAKE?” THE MAFIA BOSS'S FIANCÉE SCREAMED WHEN SHE SAW A WEDDING CAKE WRAPPED WITH A BLACK RIBBON. SHE GRABBED IT FROM THE MAID AND SMASHED IT AGAINST THE MARBLE FLOOR. BUT THE MAID DIDN'T TRY TO STOP HER. INSTEAD, SHE CALMLY REMOVED A CARD FROM HER POCKET AND SAID, “THE SENDER ASKED ME TO GIVE YOU THIS AFTER YOU DESTROYED THE CAKE.” WHAT WAS WRITTEN INSIDE MADE THE FIANCÉE TURN DEATHLY PALE.**
The cake arrived three hours before the engagement party.
Rachel Hayes stood in the Moretti mansion's grand entrance hall, holding a white wedding cake wrapped with a black satin ribbon.
It was small, elegant, and decorated with delicate sugar roses.
But something about it felt wrong.
There was no bakery label.
No delivery receipt.
Only a cream-colored envelope attached to the ribbon.
Across the front were two words.
**FOR VANESSA.**
Rachel was examining the envelope when a sharp voice interrupted her.
“What is that?”
Vanessa Sterling stood at the bottom of the staircase.
She wore a magnificent crimson evening gown.
Diamond earrings glittered beneath her dark hair.
Rachel lowered her eyes politely.
“A delivery, ma'am.”
Vanessa approached.
“For whom?”
“For you.”
Vanessa smiled.
“Another engagement gift?”
Rachel hesitated.
“I believe so, ma'am.”
Then Vanessa saw the black ribbon.
Her smile vanished.
She stopped walking.
“Where did you get that?”
“It was delivered to the front gate.”
“By whom?”
“A courier, ma'am.”
Vanessa stepped closer.
Her eyes fixed on the cake.
Then on the ribbon.
Her breathing quickened.
**“WHO SENT THAT?”**
Rachel answered calmly.
“The sender didn't leave a name.”
Vanessa's face turned white.
“Give it to me.”
Rachel held out the cake.
Vanessa snatched it from her hands.
For one moment, she simply stared at the black ribbon.
Then she screamed.
**“GET THIS OUT OF MY HOUSE!”**
She hurled the cake onto the marble floor.
**CRASH!**
White frosting exploded across the tiles.
Sugar roses shattered.
The black ribbon landed beside Vanessa's expensive heels.
Rachel didn't move.
She didn't scream.
Didn't try to save the cake.
She simply watched it fall.
Then quietly reached into her apron pocket.
“Mrs. Sterling?”
Vanessa spun toward her.
“What?”
Rachel removed a small cream-colored card.
**“THE SENDER ASKED ME TO GIVE YOU THIS AFTER YOU DESTROYED THE CAKE.”**
Vanessa froze.
“What did you say?”
Rachel held out the card.
“The instructions were very specific, ma'am.”
Before Vanessa could take it, a deep voice came from the doorway.
“What happened here?”
Dominic Moretti stood at the entrance.
Thirty-eight years old, tall and broad-shouldered, he wore a tailored black suit.
His eyes moved from the ruined cake to his fiancée.
Then to Rachel.
“Someone want to explain?”
Vanessa immediately forced a smile.
“Darling! It was nothing. Just a ridiculous prank.”
Dominic looked at the shattered cake.
“You smashed an entire cake because of a prank?”
“It was inappropriate!”
He noticed the black ribbon.
“Why?”
Vanessa quickly stepped on it.
“No reason.”
Rachel remained silent.
Dominic turned toward her.
“Rachel?”
The maid raised her eyes.
“The cake was delivered for Mrs. Sterling, sir.”
“From whom?”
“The sender requested anonymity.”
Vanessa interrupted.
“And that's the end of it!”
Rachel calmly continued.
“But they also left a card.”
Vanessa's expression changed.
**“DON'T GIVE HIM THAT!”**
Dominic slowly turned.
“Why not?”
Vanessa swallowed.
“Because it's addressed to me!”
Rachel looked at Dominic.
“Actually, sir, the card was to be opened in your presence.”
The room fell silent.
Dominic extended his hand.
“May I?”
Rachel handed him the card.
Vanessa lunged forward.
**“DOMINIC, DON'T!”**
He stepped aside.
“Vanessa. Stop.”
He opened the envelope.
Inside was a photograph of a man's wedding ring.
A heavy gold band.
Engraved with a tiny black rose.
Beneath the photograph was a single sentence.
**YOU PROMISED ME YOU WOULD NEVER MARRY AGAIN.**
Dominic stared at the words.
Then slowly looked at Vanessa.
“What is this?”
She shook her head.
“I don't know.”
He held up the photograph.
“Whose ring is that?”
Vanessa's lips trembled.
“Dominic, please. Someone is trying to ruin our engagement.”
Rachel quietly spoke.
“There's something written on the back, sir.”
Dominic turned the photograph over.
A date appeared beneath the image.
**JUNE 14, 2022.**
Four years earlier.
Dominic frowned.
“Vanessa, where were you in June 2022?”
She stared at him.
“Why?”
“Answer me.”
“I was living in Boston.”
Dominic looked at the photograph.
The ring looked strangely familiar.
He examined the black rose engraved inside the band.
Then his expression changed.
He had seen that symbol before.
On a ring worn by his younger brother, Gabriel.
Gabriel Moretti had disappeared four years earlier.
His car had been found burned beside an abandoned highway.
No body had ever been recovered.
Dominic had spent years searching for answers.
And Vanessa had always claimed she'd never met Gabriel.
Dominic slowly raised his eyes.
“Where did you get this photograph?”
Vanessa backed away.
“I told you. I don't know!”
He turned toward Rachel.
“Did the courier say anything else?”
The maid nodded.
“Yes, sir.”
“What?”
“He said Mrs. Sterling would recognize the ribbon.”
Vanessa's breathing quickened.
Rachel continued.
“He also said she would know why the cake had only one sugar rose painted black.”
Dominic looked down.
Among the broken decorations lay a single black rose.
He picked it up.
Vanessa suddenly grabbed his arm.
**“THROW IT AWAY!”**
Dominic pulled back.
“Why?”
“Because it's disgusting!”
He looked at her.
“It's a sugar flower, Vanessa.”
She began shaking.
Rachel spoke quietly.
“Sir, I think you should look underneath it.”
Dominic turned the broken rose over.
A small metal object had been embedded inside the sugar.
He carefully removed it.
A key.
Tiny.
Silver.
Engraved with the number 214.
Dominic stared.
“What's this?”
Vanessa stepped backward.
“No…”
Rachel looked at her.
“Do you recognize it, ma'am?”
Vanessa shook her head.
“No.”
But her voice was barely audible.
Dominic examined the key.
It was an old-fashioned hotel room key.
He turned toward Rachel.
“Did the sender mention a hotel?”
The maid nodded.
“Yes, sir.”
Vanessa's head snapped toward her.
**“RACHEL!”**
Dominic frowned.
“What hotel?”
Rachel answered calmly.
“The Blackwood Hotel in Boston.”
Vanessa stumbled backward.
Dominic froze.
He knew that hotel.
Four years earlier, Gabriel had stayed there during his final business trip.
The same trip from which he never returned.
Dominic slowly looked at Vanessa.
“You told me you were living in Boston that year.”
She swallowed.
“Yes.”
“And Gabriel disappeared in Boston.”
Vanessa shook her head.
“That's a coincidence!”
Dominic held up the key.
“Then explain why someone sent you a key to a room in the hotel where my brother was last seen.”
Vanessa began crying.
“Dominic, please…”
He stepped closer.
“Did you know Gabriel?”
“No!”
“Look at me.”
She couldn't.
**“DID YOU KNOW MY BROTHER?”**
Vanessa suddenly screamed.
**“HE WASN'T SUPPOSED TO KEEP THAT RING!”**
Silence.
Dominic stopped moving.
Rachel slowly lowered her eyes.
Vanessa covered her mouth.
But the words were already out.
Dominic's voice became dangerously quiet.
“What ring?”
Vanessa shook her head.
“I didn't mean—”
“The ring in this photograph?”
She began sobbing.
Dominic looked at the picture again.
The black rose.
The gold band.
The date.
Then he noticed something he'd missed.
The photograph showed two hands.
One wearing the gold ring.
The other wearing a diamond engagement ring.
He recognized that diamond.
It was the same ring Vanessa had claimed belonged to her grandmother.
The ring she still wore on her right hand.
Dominic slowly looked at it.
“Vanessa…”
She tried to hide her hand.
He caught her wrist gently but firmly enough to stop her.
“Where did you get that diamond ring?”
Her lips trembled.
“My grandmother.”
Dominic held up the photograph.
**“THEN WHY ARE YOU WEARING IT IN A PICTURE TAKEN WITH MY BROTHER FOUR YEARS AGO?”**
Vanessa began shaking uncontrollably.
Rachel quietly stepped forward.
“Sir, there's one final message.”
Dominic turned.
“What message?”
“The sender asked me to tell Mrs. Sterling something if she tried to deny recognizing the ring.”
Vanessa screamed.
**“DON'T SAY IT!”**
Rachel remained calm.
Then spoke clearly.
**“HE SAID THE FIRST WEDDING CAKE WAS WHITE TOO.”**
Dominic froze.
“First wedding cake?”
Vanessa backed toward the staircase.
Rachel continued.
“And he said Mrs. Sterling would remember what happened in Room 214.”
Dominic looked at Vanessa.
His eyes narrowed.
“Vanessa. Were you married before?”
She shook her head desperately.
“No!”
He raised the photograph.
“Then why does someone believe you promised never to marry again?”
Vanessa began crying.
“Dominic, I loved you! I really did!”
He stared at her.
“Loved me?”
She covered her face.
“I never wanted you to find out like this!”
Dominic felt his chest tighten.
He looked down at the gold ring.
At the black rose.
At the hotel key.
Then he remembered Gabriel's last phone call.
His younger brother had sounded unusually happy.
*“Dom, when I get home, there's someone I want you to meet.”*
Dominic had never learned who that person was.
Until now.
He slowly approached Vanessa.
His voice was low.
Controlled.
Terrifying.
**“WHO DID YOU PROMISE THAT TO?”**
Vanessa stared at the photograph.
Then whispered:
“Dominic… if I tell you, you'll never forgive me.”
He didn't move.
“Try me.”
Her eyes filled with tears.
She looked toward the ruined wedding cake.
Then at the key marked 214.
And finally, she whispered:
**“YOUR BROTHER NEVER KNEW I WAS GOING TO MARRY YOU.”**
Dominic went completely still.
Outside, a car pulled up to the mansion.
Rachel glanced toward the front windows.
A man in a dark coat stepped out.
He carried another cream-colored box.
This one was tied with a white ribbon.
Rachel looked at Dominic.
“Sir…”
He turned.
The maid swallowed.
**“THE COURIER SAID THERE WOULD BE A SECOND DELIVERY IF MRS. STERLING DESTROYED THE FIRST.”**
Vanessa looked toward the window.
May you like
And screamed.
