Chapter 9 - THE LAST MORETTI SECRET

Detective Cross was arrested before dawn.

The surviving guards surrendered, and Vanessa was taken into custody for questioning. Thomas delivered the recording from the ferry terminal to federal investigators, along with copies of the ledger.

For the first time in years, the Moretti family's carefully constructed walls began to collapse.

But Lydia Vale remained missing.

Luca moved Eleanor to a secure apartment under constant protection. Gabriel stayed nearby, though the brothers barely spoke unless necessary. Five years of grief and betrayal could not be erased by a single reunion.

Sophie spent the next two days helping investigators organize Margaret's documents.

On the third morning, she found a sealed envelope inside the lining of her mother's old sewing box.

It bore no address.

Only her name.

Inside was a letter dated six months before Margaret's death.

My dearest Sophie,

If you're reading this, then the truth has finally reached you. I have carried it for most of my life, and I am sorry that I left you the burden of finishing what I could not.

There is something I never told you about Claire Whitmore.

She was not only Gabriel's great love. She was my daughter.

Sophie stopped reading.

The room seemed to tilt.

She read the sentence again.

Her mother had another daughter.

A daughter who had been murdered.

A daughter whose child, Isabella, had been hidden from the world.

The letter continued.

When Claire became pregnant, she feared the Moretti family would take her baby. She asked me to help her disappear. I arranged a safe room at the hospital, but Lydia found out. I arrived too late to save Claire.

I took Isabella away before they could reach her. I gave her to a family I trusted, believing she would be safer far from the Moretti name. Years later, Gabriel found her and brought her back to Eleanor.

I thought the danger had passed. I was wrong.

Sophie pressed the letter against her chest.

She had grown up believing she was an only child.

Now she knew she had a niece.

And someone had spent years hiding the truth from her.

She found Luca in the kitchen, staring into a cup of untouched coffee.

“I need to tell you something.”

He looked up immediately.

“What happened?”

Sophie handed him the letter.

He read it slowly.

When he finished, he closed his eyes.

“Claire was your sister.”

“My mother's daughter.”

“And Isabella is your niece.”

Sophie nodded, tears gathering in her eyes.

“I spent eleven months protecting Eleanor without knowing why my mother had chosen me. Now I understand.”

Luca reached for her hand.

“You shouldn't have to carry this alone.”

“I know.”

For a moment, they stood together in silence.

Then Luca said, “When this is over, I want you to stay.”

Sophie looked at him.

“As your mother's maid?”

“No.”

He took a breath.

“As yourself.”

She wanted to believe him. But she had seen how power could turn love into a transaction. She needed to know that whatever existed between them could survive without fear or obligation.

“Don't ask me to make that decision while everyone I care about is in danger.”

He nodded.

“Fair.”

That afternoon, Gabriel arrived with Isabella.

The little girl stood in the doorway clutching a stuffed rabbit. Her eyes moved from Luca to Sophie, then to Eleanor, who waited on the sofa with both hands extended.

“Is it really Grandma Eleanor?” Isabella asked.

Eleanor began to cry.

“Come here, sweetheart.”

Isabella ran into her arms.

For several minutes, nobody spoke.

Then the girl looked at Sophie.

“Daddy says you're my aunt.”

Sophie knelt.

“I think I am.”

“Did you know my mommy?”

“No, sweetheart. But I'm going to learn everything I can about her.”

Isabella hugged her.

“I want to know, too.”

The reunion should have been a moment of peace.

Instead, Gabriel noticed a black envelope resting on the kitchen counter.

No one knew who had delivered it.

Inside was a document bearing Dominic's signature, dated two days before his death.

It transferred controlling interest in the family's legitimate businesses to a woman named Lydia Vale.

But the final paragraph was what made Gabriel stagger.

In the event of my death, all decisions concerning the family trust shall be made jointly by my surviving sons and my daughter, whose identity shall remain concealed until the appointed time.

Luca frowned.

“Daughter?”

Eleanor's face went pale.

“Dominic had no daughter.”

Gabriel looked at her.

“Are you certain?”

Eleanor gripped the armrest.

“There was a baby. Years before you were born. Dominic told me the child died.”

Luca stared at the document.

“What was her name?”

Eleanor whispered, “Lydia.”

The room fell silent.

Lydia Vale wasn't merely Eleanor's sister.

She was Dominic's daughter.

Gabriel read the document again.

“If this is genuine, she has a legal claim to the trust.”

“And she has spent years manipulating us,” Luca said.

Sophie turned the page.

A second sheet had been attached, containing a recent bank transfer from the family trust to a private account.

The transfer had occurred that morning.

The recipient was identified only by initials.

L.V.

Below it was a handwritten message.

The family has gathered. The child has returned. Now we can begin.

Luca immediately called Thomas.

“Find Lydia. I want every camera, every bank transaction, every known associate searched.”

Thomas promised to do everything possible.

But before he could leave, Isabella tugged on Gabriel's sleeve.

“Daddy?”

Gabriel knelt beside her.

“What is it, sweetheart?”

She looked frightened.

“There's a lady who comes to my room at night.”

Everyone went still.

“What lady?” Gabriel asked.

“The one who says she knew Mommy.”

Sophie crouched beside her.

“Can you tell us what she looks like?”

Isabella nodded.

“She has white hair. And she smells like roses.”

Eleanor's fingers tightened around the blanket.

“Lydia.”

Luca turned toward the window.

Outside, a woman stood on the opposite sidewalk, watching the house.

Her white hair gleamed beneath the streetlight.

She raised one hand in a slow, deliberate wave.

Then she disappeared into the crowd.

Luca rushed outside.

But all he found on the pavement was a small silver pendant shaped like a star.

The same pendant Claire had worn in the photograph.

And attached to it was a note.
