Chapter 1 - The Bullet Behind the Portrait

Luca Moretti found his fiancée pointing a gun at his father's portrait.

The office door stood half open when he entered.

Vanessa was alone, dressed in a crimson evening gown, her right hand gripping a black pistol.

The barrel was aimed directly at Antonio Moretti's face.

"Luca," she whispered.

He stopped.

"Put the gun down."

Vanessa didn't move.

Her eyes remained fixed on the portrait hanging above his father's old desk.

"He ruined everything."

Luca slowly closed the office door behind him.

"What did he ruin?"

Vanessa's fingers tightened around the grip.

For the first time since he'd known her, she looked genuinely afraid.

Then Emily Carter, the family's maid, appeared in the doorway carrying a stack of folded linens.

She froze.

Vanessa immediately turned toward her.

"Get out."

Emily didn't move.

Her eyes had caught something strange.

A small, dark hole in the center of Antonio's painted chest.

It wasn't a crack in the frame.

It was a bullet hole.

"Mr. Moretti," Emily said quietly.

Luca glanced at her.

"What?"

Emily pointed toward the portrait.

"That painting has been shot."

Luca looked up.

He had inherited the office from his father six years earlier.

He had stood beneath that portrait during business meetings, arguments, and countless sleepless nights.

He had never noticed the damage.

Vanessa lowered the gun.

"Emily, leave."

But Emily had already stepped closer.

The bullet hole was old.

The edges of the canvas had darkened, and the wood behind it appeared slightly damaged.

Luca approached the painting.

"Who did this?"

Vanessa swallowed.

"I don't know."

He turned toward her.

"You were holding a gun at it."

"I said I don't know!"

Her voice cracked.

Luca stared at her.

Then he reached for the pistol.

Vanessa hesitated before handing it over.

He placed it on the desk.

"Emily, close the door."

The maid obeyed.

Luca returned to the portrait.

He carefully lifted the heavy frame from its hooks.

Something scraped against the wall.

A small object fell onto the desk.

It was a brass key.

Vanessa's face went white.

Luca picked it up.

"What is this?"

She said nothing.

He turned the portrait around.

Behind the canvas, someone had taped a photograph to the wooden backing.

The edges were yellowed.

Luca carefully removed it.

Then he stopped breathing.

The photograph showed Antonio Moretti standing beside a little girl.

She couldn't have been older than seven.

Her dark hair was tied with a white ribbon.

Antonio's hand rested on her shoulder.

And the little girl was Vanessa.

Luca looked at the photograph again.

Then at his fiancée.

"Where was this taken?"

Vanessa's lips parted.

"I don't remember."

"You don't remember?"

She shook her head.

Luca turned the photograph over.

There was handwriting on the back.

October 14, 1998.

Below it, another sentence.

The day we brought her home.

Luca stared at the words.

His father had died years before he met Vanessa.

He had never mentioned her.

Never shown him the photograph.

Never explained why a little girl stood beside him in a family picture.

Luca slowly raised his eyes.

"Why did my father know you before I did?"

Vanessa looked at him.

Her expression changed.

The fear disappeared.

Something colder took its place.

"Because he was the one who brought me into this family."

Luca's jaw tightened.

"What does that mean?"

Vanessa glanced at Emily.

The maid stood beside the closed office door.

She had noticed something else.

The brass key Luca had found was still on the desk.

But there was a second keyhole behind the portrait.

Emily stepped forward.

"Mr. Moretti."

Luca turned.

"What?"

She pointed to the wooden backing.

"That key might open something."

Luca inserted it into the small lock.

It turned.

A hidden compartment opened behind the portrait.

Inside was a folded document.

And a second photograph.

This one showed Antonio holding a newborn baby.

Beside him stood a woman whose face had been scratched out.

Luca unfolded the document.

The first line made his blood run cold.

ADOPTION RECORD — PRIVATE FAMILY FILE

He looked at Vanessa.

Then at the photograph.

"Who was that woman?"

Vanessa took a step backward.

"I never saw that."

Luca looked down at the document again.

There was a name written beneath the scratched-out photograph.

ELENA MORETTI.

His dead mother's name.

Then he noticed the date.

The document had been signed twenty-eight years earlier.

And the child listed beneath Elena's name wasn't Luca.

It was Vanessa.

Luca slowly lifted his head.

"Vanessa..."

She stared at him.

Then whispered:

"Your father promised you would never find that."

Emily looked toward the open compartment.

Something else was hidden inside.

A small envelope.

Luca pulled it out.

His father's handwriting covered the front.

For my son. Only if Vanessa comes back.

Luca opened it.

There was a single sentence.

If she is standing in your office, then the girl I saved has finally come to collect what belongs to her.

Vanessa's eyes filled with tears.

Luca looked at her.

"What does she want?"

Vanessa didn't answer.

Instead, she reached into her purse.

And pulled out another photograph.

This one showed Antonio standing beside a young woman.

The woman was holding a baby.

Luca recognized the face.

It was his mother.

But the baby wasn't him.

Vanessa placed the photograph on the desk.

Then she whispered:

"Your father didn't bring me into this family."

She looked directly at Luca.

May you like

"He took me out of it."
