Chapter 8 - The Uncle Who Came Back From the Dead

The meeting took place in a secure conference room at the attorney's office.
Richard arrived under supervision, accompanied by his lawyer.
Marcus stood near the window.
Sebastian sat at the table.
Antonio joined them remotely from the hospital, where his doctor had approved a short video call.
For several seconds, Richard simply stared at his older brother on the screen.
Then he spoke.
“Antonio.”
Antonio's face was unreadable.
“You let me bury you.”
Richard lowered his eyes.
“I know.”
“You let your nephews believe you were dead.”
“I thought it was the only way to survive.”
Sebastian leaned forward.
“Survive whom?”
Richard looked at him.
“Thomas Sterling.”
The room went silent.
Richard explained that he had discovered irregularities in the family accounts eleven years earlier. Thomas had been transferring money through shell companies and using the family business to conceal the transactions.
When Richard threatened to expose him, Thomas arranged a meeting.
Richard believed they were going to resolve the dispute.
Instead, he found himself being followed by men he didn't recognize.
After the accident that supposedly killed him, Richard woke in a private clinic with injuries and no identification.
A man connected to Thomas had arranged the treatment.
He was told that if he returned to Chicago, his family would suffer.
“I believed him,” Richard said. “And I ran.”
Antonio closed his eyes.
“You should have come to me.”
“I was afraid.”
“You left us to mourn you.”
Richard's face crumpled.
“I know.”
Sebastian interrupted.
“Why did you return?”
Richard placed a small case on the table.
“Because Thomas is dead, and I thought the danger had passed. Then Vanessa contacted me.”
He opened the case.
Inside were original ledgers, bank instructions, and correspondence.
“The missing money was never taken by your father,” Richard said. “It was transferred through accounts controlled by Thomas. He used your mother's copied signature to conceal the theft.”
Marcus stared at the records.
“Why did Vanessa want the trust?”
“Because the original trust contains an audit provision. If the trustee investigates the disputed transfers, the entire network can be exposed.”
Sebastian frowned.
“Why not simply destroy the documents?”
“Because there are copies outside the family. Vanessa wanted legal control over Antonio's affairs so she could challenge the trust's validity and gain access to the remaining assets.”
“And the medical neglect?”
Richard looked sick.
“I don't know the full details. But I know she was desperate. She believed that if Antonio were declared incapable before the review, she could prevent him from challenging the transfers.”
Sebastian's voice turned cold.
“So she was willing to starve an elderly man to get control of his money.”
Richard lowered his eyes.
“Yes.”
Antonio's voice came through the screen.
“Did you know my wife suspected Thomas?”
Richard looked toward the monitor.
“She told me she had found a discrepancy. She wanted to meet me the night before her accident.”
Antonio went still.
“What?”
Richard swallowed.
“We were supposed to meet at the lakeside house. She never arrived.”
Sebastian felt his stomach tighten.
“Why didn't you tell the police?”
“I was already hiding. I believed Thomas had arranged the accident, but I had no proof.”
Antonio stared at his brother.
For eleven years, he had mourned his wife and believed his brother was dead.
Now both losses had become questions.
The room fell silent.
Richard pushed another document toward Sebastian.
“This is the original transfer instruction. It contains the name of the person who approved the payment to Thomas.”
Sebastian examined it.
The signature was real.
The authorization was genuine.
But the name was not their mother's.
It belonged to someone who had held power over the family business before Sebastian took control.
Someone who had signed the documents while Antonio was away.
Someone whose identity had been carefully concealed in every copy Sebastian had previously seen.
He looked up.
“Who is this?”
Richard swallowed.
“Your grandfather's attorney.”
Sebastian frowned.
“He died twenty years ago.”
Richard nodded.
“Officially.”
The room went silent.
Richard continued.
“He disappeared after your grandfather's death. Thomas told us he had moved overseas. But the last time I saw him, he was meeting with a man who looked exactly like the person in this photograph.”
Richard placed an old photograph on the table.
Sebastian stared at the face.
He recognized the man.
Not from the past.
From the present.
The same man had attended his father's birthday dinner three years earlier.
He had introduced himself as a family adviser.
And he had recently sent Sebastian a message expressing concern about Antonio's health.
His name was Jonathan Vale.
