Chapter 9 - The Bakery on Sullivan Street

Dante survived.

The bullet missed his heart by less than two inches.

Maya learned that measurement because the surgeon repeated it twice.

Two inches.

For eighteen hours, those two inches felt like the entire universe.

Sophia slept against Maya in the hospital waiting room.

Elena sat on Maya's other side.

Neither woman spoke much.

There wasn't anything to say.

At seven sixteen the following morning, the surgeon emerged.

"He's awake."

Maya cried before she could stop herself.

Sophia woke.

"Daddy?"

Maya kissed her forehead.

"Daddy's okay."

Dante spent nine days in the hospital.

On day two, he complained about the food.

On day three, he attempted to conduct a board meeting.

On day four, Maya threatened to smother him with his pillow unless he rested.

The nurse pretended not to hear.

By day six, Sophia was sitting beside him drawing pictures.

One showed three people holding hands.

Dante studied it.

"Who's that?"

"You."

"And that?"

"Me."

He pointed to the woman.

Sophia gave him the sort of look reserved for particularly slow adults.

"Maya."

Dante smiled.

Sophia added a fourth figure.

"Mommy."

Dante glanced at Elena.

Elena smiled.

For the first time, their broken marriage didn't feel like a failure.

It felt like something they had survived well enough to build a healthier family afterward.

Carlo was charged with kidnapping, attempted murder, conspiracy, financial crimes, and multiple offenses tied to the old network.

The evidence also reopened Julian's death and Daniel Carter's suspicious heart attack.

Months later, investigators confirmed Carlo had arranged Daniel's death.

Maya expected revenge to feel satisfying.

It didn't.

Justice felt quieter.

Like finally putting down something heavy.

Dante kept his promise to dismantle what remained of the criminal organization.

It cost him.

Contracts disappeared.

Old allies turned hostile.

Several Russo companies were sold.

But the businesses that remained became clean.

Completely.

For the first time in generations, Sophia Russo would inherit money without inheriting enemies.

Maya returned to her bakery plans.

She named it Carter & Crumb.

Dante hated the name.

"It's charming," Maya argued.

"It sounds like a law firm for cookies."

Tony loved it immediately.

Therefore, according to Maya, the vote was two to one.

Dante reminded her that he owned forty-nine percent of the financing agreement.

"Exactly," she said. "Minority."

He stared at her.

She smiled.

He kissed her.

Opening morning arrived six months after Bellanote.

A line formed before sunrise.

Tony stood behind the counter wearing an apron Maya had made for him.

Marco claimed he was only there for security but ate four croissants.

Elena brought flowers.

Sophia wore a pink dress and a tiny matching apron.

Dante arrived last.

Maya saw him through the front window.

He paused outside.

For a moment, he simply watched her.

She remembered the first night at Bellanote.

The frightening stranger.

The silent little girl.

The exhausted waitress who thought saving enough money for a bakery was the biggest challenge life could give her.

Dante entered.

"Congratulations."

Maya folded her arms.

"You're late."

"I own part of the bank financing."

"That doesn't make you the boss."

"I'm beginning to understand that."

Sophia ran between them.

"Maya! We sold all the chocolate ones!"

"Already?"

"Marco ate some."

"I paid," Marco protested.

Everyone laughed.

Dante watched Maya.

Later, when the crowd thinned, he pulled her into the pantry.

"Very professional."

"I need sixty seconds."

"For?"

He kissed her.

Maya laughed against his mouth.

"That's workplace harassment."

"I'm technically not your employer."

"Good recovery."

He touched her cheek.

Then his expression became serious.

"What?"

"I need to ask you something."

Her heart accelerated.

Dante reached into his jacket.

Maya stared.

"No."

He stopped.

"You don't even know what I'm asking."

"If that's a diamond—"

"It's not."

He removed a key.

Maya blinked.

"What is that?"

"My house."

"You already gave me a key."

"No."

He placed it in her palm.

"This is a different house."

"Dante."

"I sold the townhouse."

She stared.

"What?"

"Too many memories."

His voice softened.

"I bought somewhere smaller."

"Define smaller."

"Only six bedrooms."

Maya groaned.

He smiled.

"There's a garden."

She looked down at the key.

"And?"

"And a room with commercial ventilation."

Her eyes narrowed.

"You put a bakery kitchen in your house?"

"Our house, if you want it."

Maya's breath caught.

Dante didn't kneel.

Didn't produce a ring.

Didn't turn the moment into a performance.

He simply stood in front of her.

"I don't know what we're supposed to call this yet. I only know I want to wake up with you there."

Maya's eyes filled.

"And Sophia?"

"She's been referring to it as your room for three weeks."

Maya laughed through her tears.

"Conspiracy."

"Absolutely."

She closed her fingers around the key.

"Okay."

Dante exhaled.

"Okay?"

"Okay."

He kissed her forehead.

Then Sophia burst through the pantry door.

"Did she say yes?"

Maya stared.

Dante looked guilty.

"You involved a five-year-old?"

Sophia grinned.

"There's another surprise."

Maya narrowed her eyes.

"What surprise?"

Dante looked at his daughter.

Sophia looked at Dante.

May you like

Neither answered.

And Maya suddenly had the distinct impression that moving in was only the beginning.
