Chapter 7 - The Ledger of LiesTen minutes later, the air in the private surveillance bunker beneath the wine cellar was crisp and filtered.

Evelyn sat wrapped in a heavy wool blanket, her color steadily returning as the medical regulator fed ninety-five percent pure oxygen into her bloodstream. Gabriel had dressed the cut on his cheek and sat beside the bank of security monitors, watching Paul Raines pacing the courtyard above like a caged wolf.
On the desk between them lay Cole Bishop's encrypted smartphone, which Gabriel had successfully unlocked using the man’s thumbprint before leaving him bound in the garage.
"Look at this," Gabriel said, turning the glowing screen toward Evelyn.
The device contained months of encrypted correspondence with an off-shore entity known only as The Apex Syndicate—a black-market consortium operating out of Chicago and Montreal.
Paul hadn't just arranged the fire at the Franklin Street warehouse to eliminate Gabriel. He had been laundering hundreds of millions of dollars through Gabriel’s logistics network without his knowledge. The Chicago cartel meeting Gabriel was supposed to attend that morning was an ambush; Gabriel was meant to be assassinated on the runway in Illinois, leaving Paul to assume total control of the Mercer empire as the grieving, loyal second-in-command.
"And Dr. Vance's office?" Evelyn asked quietly, adjusting the straps of her mask.
"Bugged," Gabriel replied, scrolling through audio logs. "Paul had acoustic listening devices planted in Vance’s examination rooms. He knew about your pulmonary fibrosis before you even left the clinic with your first prescription. He deliberately fed my paranoia, knowing my history with my mother. He weaponized my deepest trauma against the woman who saved my life."
Gabriel’s fingers curled into fists so tight the knuckles turned white.
"What do we do now?" Evelyn asked. "He has the house surrounded. The local police captain is on his payroll."
"Paul thinks he controls the board," Gabriel said, opening the master console of the estate's private fiber-optic network. "He forgets who built the communication infrastructure for every family in this state."
Gabriel plugged the encrypted phone directly into the server terminal. Within thirty seconds, he broadcasted Cole’s confession, the audio files of Paul plotting the warehouse arson, and the off-shore wire transfers to every single underboss, captain, and syndicate elder across the Eastern seaboard.
Above them, the courtyard erupted into chaos.
Through the security feed, Gabriel watched Paul’s phone ring. Then another phone rang. And another. The mercenaries Paul had hired began lowering their weapons, exchanging wary, hostile glances. Paul answered his cell, his arrogant face instantly draining of color as the supreme council in Chicago revoked his authority in real-time.
"He's running," Evelyn whispered, pointing to the monitor.
Paul scrambled into the passenger seat of an Escalade, abandoning his men as the vehicle tore out of the estate gates toward the harbor.
Gabriel stood up, racking the slide of his tactical rifle. "Stay here, Evelyn. The security doors are locked from the inside. Nobody gets in."

Evelyn reached out, catching his sleeve. "Gabriel. Bring an end to this. Not for revenge. For us."
He looked at her—really looked at her—and nodded. "For us."
