Chapter 7 - The Fire at the Foundation

Smoke was already rising when they reached the block.
Vivian tried to leave the federal vehicle before it stopped.
An agent caught her arm.
“No.”
“My people are inside.”
“Fire crews are clearing the building.”
Vivian saw volunteers clustered across the street.
Naomi.
Students.
Staff.
She counted faces.
One was missing.
“Eli.”
Naomi heard her.
“What?”
“Eli Patterson. Scholarship intern. Where is he?”
Naomi went pale.
“He went downstairs for archived applications.”
Vivian ran.
Gideon caught her before she crossed the police line.
“Let go!”
“No.”
“There’s a kid inside!”
“And running into a burning building won’t help him.”
She fought him.
For one terrible second, he almost used strength to stop her.
Then he released her and turned to the fire captain.
“Basement archive. Northeast stairwell. There’s a nineteen-year-old inside.”
The captain radioed the information.
Minutes stretched.
Vivian could barely breathe.
Then firefighters emerged.
Between them was Eli.
Alive.
Vivian covered her mouth.
Gideon closed his eyes.
The fire was contained.
Investigators found accelerant near the records room.
Raymond had tried to destroy evidence.
He had failed.
But he had left one more message.
A burner phone had been taped beneath Vivian’s desk.
It contained a video.
Raymond appeared onscreen.
“If you’re watching this, Vivian, Gideon has probably convinced you he’s changing.”
Gideon stood behind her as the video played.
“Men like Gideon don’t change. They adapt when they’re losing.”
Vivian’s face remained still.
Raymond continued.
“Ask him about the night he bought Mercer Global from his father. Ask what he promised in exchange.”
The video ended.
Gideon frowned.
“I don’t know what he means.”
Vivian believed that he believed it.
But belief was no longer enough.
The answer came from Gideon’s mother, Eleanor Mercer.
She arrived the next morning carrying an old legal file.
At seventy-one, Eleanor still possessed the intimidating calm of someone accustomed to surviving powerful men.
“Your father made Gideon sign something before transferring control,” she said.
Gideon opened the file.
A shareholder agreement.
Buried in its pages was a provision he had forgotten.
Twenty percent of Mercer Global had been placed in a marital trust.
Beneficiary:
Vivian Mercer.
Gideon stared.
“I never knew.”
Eleanor looked at him coldly.
“You never read the final documents.”
“Why would Dad give Vivian twenty percent?”
“Because he trusted her.”
The room went silent.
Eleanor turned to Vivian.
“My husband knew Gideon was brilliant. He also knew brilliance without restraint becomes destruction.”
Gideon absorbed the words.
Vivian asked, “Does Raymond know?”
“He helped prepare the operational schedules attached to the agreement.”
Suddenly everything changed.
Raymond had not merely been hiding theft.
If Gideon fell and Vivian divorced him under certain misconduct provisions, Vivian’s trust shares gained enhanced voting rights.
Raymond had been trying to trigger a corporate war.
Humiliate the marriage.
Expose Gideon.
Force Vivian to act.
Then manipulate the resulting board fight and acquire distressed company assets through intermediaries.
Gideon looked sick.
“My affairs helped him.”
Eleanor did not soften it.
“Your affairs made you predictable.”
That afternoon, Vivian met Gideon alone.
“You need to resign permanently.”
He looked at her.
Not angry.
Just wounded.
“From Mercer Global?”
“Yes.”
“Is that what you want?”
“It’s what the company needs until this is resolved.”
He looked through the window.
Twelve years earlier, Gideon would have called it betrayal.
A month earlier, he might have called it humiliation.
Now he simply asked:
“Will you take my place?”
Vivian blinked.
“Temporarily.”
“You trust me with it?”
“I trusted you with everything long before I deserved your trust.”
He signed the resignation that evening.
The next morning, Vivian Mercer walked into the Mercer Global boardroom.
For the first time, she did not enter as Gideon Mercer’s wife.
She entered as acting chairwoman.
Every director stood.
Across town, Raymond watched the announcement on television.
His smile disappeared.
Then he made a call.
“Plan B.”
The voice on the other end asked, “What’s Plan B?”
Raymond looked at Vivian’s face on the screen.
“We stop attacking Gideon.”
May you like
His eyes narrowed.
“We take Vivian.”
