Chapter 9 - The Last Debt

Sal Marino chose the school fundraiser because he expected chaos.

Children.

Parents.

Cars.

Too many faces.

Too many exits.

What he did not expect was Norah.

She noticed the same black sedan twice.

Once outside the bakery.

Again near Eli's preschool.

Three years of running had trained her better than any bodyguard.

She called Arthur.

"Don't panic."

Arthur immediately panicked.

"Where's Eli?"

"With me."

"Where?"

"Preschool fundraiser."

"I'm coming."

"Arthur—"

"Norah."

She heard the fear.

Not anger.

Fear.

"Okay."

Arthur arrived 8 minutes later.

Too late.

The fire alarm sounded as he entered the parking lot.

Parents poured from the building.

Arthur ran against the crowd.

"Norah!"

Then he saw her.

She was fighting a man beside a service entrance.

Eli screamed from inside a black SUV.

Arthur ran.

The vehicle accelerated.

Norah broke free and jumped into Arthur's car.

"Drive!"

They followed.

No guards.

No strategy.

Just 2 parents chasing their child.

The SUV headed toward the old waterfront.

Arthur called the federal task force.

Norah tracked Eli's backpack through a locator she had sewn into the lining.

"You put a tracker in his backpack?"

"I spent 3 years being hunted."

Arthur glanced at her.

"I love you."

"Terrible timing."

"I know."

"Drive faster."

Arthur almost smiled.

They found the SUV abandoned near Pier 12.

Eli's backpack lay on the pavement.

Norah's face crumpled.

Arthur grabbed her shoulders.

"Look at me."

She did.

"We find him."

"What if—"

"No."

His voice softened.

"You kept me alive for 3 years without me even knowing. Let me carry the hope for 5 minutes."

Norah stared at him.

Then nodded.

They entered the warehouse.

Sal Marino waited on the upper catwalk.

Eli sat beside him.

Unharmed.

Terrified.

Arthur's entire body changed.

"Let him go."

Sal smiled.

"Your father killed my father. Your organization killed my brother. Vincent destroyed himself trying to hurt you."

"This isn't Eli's debt."

"In our world, sons inherit everything."

Arthur looked at his child.

"No."

He slowly removed his gun and placed it on the floor.

"That's exactly what ends today."

Sal frowned.

Arthur kicked the weapon away.

"No more sons paying for fathers."

Sal raised his pistol.

Norah saw movement outside.

Federal agents.

Arthur had kept Sal talking long enough.

Sal realized it too.

He grabbed Eli.

Arthur moved.

The shot exploded.

Norah screamed.

Arthur crashed into Sal.

Eli fell away.

Norah ran and pulled her son into her arms.

Agents flooded the warehouse.

Sal was arrested alive.

Arthur remained on the floor.

Blood spread beneath him.

"Arthur!"

Norah dropped beside him.

The bullet had entered below his ribs.

His face was gray.

"Hey," he whispered.

"No."

She pressed both hands against the wound.

"No, no, no."

Eli cried beside her.

Arthur looked at his son.

"Remember our promise?"

Eli nodded through tears.

"I brought her back."

"Daddy."

Arthur smiled weakly.

Then looked at Norah.

"I never deserved the way you loved me."

"Stop talking."

"I need—"

"No."

She leaned closer.

"You don't get to make this your goodbye."

Arthur's eyes fluttered.

"Bossy."

"Arthur!"

He smiled faintly.

"There's my girl."

His eyes closed.

Norah screamed his name.

The ambulance reached the hospital in 9 minutes.

Surgery lasted 6 hours.

Norah sat in the waiting room with Arthur's blood dried across her hands.

Clara held Eli.

At 4:16 a.m., the surgeon appeared.

Norah stood.

"He's alive."

Her knees nearly collapsed.

The bullet had missed Arthur's liver by less than an inch.

Recovery would be difficult.

But he would recover.

Norah entered his room after sunrise.

Arthur remained unconscious.

She sat beside him.

For hours.

When his eyes finally opened, he found her holding his hand.

"Am I dead?"

"No."

"That's disappointing. Heaven has terrible lighting."

Norah laughed and cried simultaneously.

Arthur looked at her.

"Where's Eli?"

"With Clara. Safe."

He relaxed.

Norah leaned closer.

"Arthur."

"Yeah?"

"I spent 3 years thinking about what I'd say if I ever saw you again."

He waited.

"I imagined screaming."

"Reasonable."

"I imagined slapping you."

"Also reasonable."

"I imagined walking away."

Arthur's smile faded.

Norah touched his cheek.

"But I never imagined you would become someone different."

His eyes filled.

"I'm trying."

"I know."

She leaned closer.

Arthur stopped breathing.

This time, she did not kiss his forehead.

She kissed him.

Softly.

Slowly.

No desperation.

No ownership.

Just a choice.

When she pulled away, Arthur stared at her.

"Was that the pain medication?"

Norah laughed.

"No."

"Can we verify?"

"Don't push your luck."

Arthur smiled.

Then the door opened.

Eli ran inside.

"Daddy!"

Arthur winced as the boy carefully climbed beside him.

Norah watched Arthur hold their son.

For the first time in 3 years, she allowed herself to imagine something she had been too frightened to want.

Home.

But one final question remained.

Arthur had testified.

May you like

His criminal empire was collapsing.

And when he recovered, a judge would decide whether the man Norah had finally found again would be allowed to come home.
