Chapter 6 - THE NIGHT ADRIAN VALE BROKE

Adrian did not shout.
That frightened everyone more.
He stood beside Lucas’s empty crib with one hand resting on the railing.
Then he asked Marco one question.
“Who left the property?”
Security logs showed nobody.
Which meant the kidnapper was still inside—or had used a route absent from the digital system.
Hannah remembered the private elevator.
They ran.
The elevator opened into the underground garage.
One vehicle was missing.
Theresa’s old sedan.
The house manager regained consciousness minutes later.
Her first word was a name.
“Bennett.”
Dr. Samuel Bennett.
The pediatrician they had trusted from the beginning.
The man who had known Lucas’s condition.
The man who knew Hannah could feed him.
The man who had stood inside the bakery on the first night.
Adrian’s face emptied.
Hannah suddenly understood something worse.
“How did you know to come to my bakery?”
Adrian stared at her.
“Bennett told me.”
The entire miracle had been engineered.
Bennett had directed Adrian to Hannah.
Not Julian.
Perhaps the doctor had been working both sides.
Marco traced Theresa’s sedan toward Montauk.
Adrian assembled men.
Hannah climbed into the SUV.
“No.”
She stared at him.
“Try stopping me.”
Twenty minutes later, they were racing east.
Adrian sat beside her in the darkness.
For the first time, his hands shook.
“I should never have brought him home.”
“Don’t.”
“Isabel died because of me.”
“No.”
“Lucas was taken because of me.”
“No.”
“Everyone I love—”
Hannah grabbed his face and forced him to look at her.
“Stop turning grief into evidence against yourself.”
He stared at her.
She continued.
“Grace died because she was born too early. Isabel died because people betrayed her. Lucas was taken because Bennett made a choice. You don’t get to make yourself responsible for every evil thing other people do.”
Adrian closed his eyes.
One tear escaped.
“I can’t bury my son.”
“You won’t.”
“How do you know?”
“I don’t.”
Her voice broke.
“But we go get him anyway.”
They found Theresa’s sedan near an abandoned coastal clinic.
Bennett had once owned the building.
Inside, Lucas was crying.
The sound transformed Adrian.
He moved toward it.
Hannah caught him.
“Think.”
Adrian stopped.
She pointed to the windows.
No visible guards.
Too easy.
Marco circled the building.
He found wires.
Explosives.
Bennett had prepared the clinic to burn.
Adrian’s men cut power.
They entered through the basement.
Hannah remained outside until she heard Lucas scream.
Every rational thought disappeared.
She ran inside.
Adrian found Bennett in a treatment room holding Lucas.
A pistol rested against the baby’s blanket.
“Put him down.”
Bennett laughed bitterly.
“You people destroyed everything.”
Adrian froze.
Bennett revealed the truth.
Julian had not recruited him.
Isabel had.
She had suspected Julian months before her death and secretly asked Bennett to identify safe alternatives for Lucas if anything happened.
That was why Bennett found Hannah.
That was why he possessed her records.
But after Isabel died, Julian discovered Bennett’s involvement.
He threatened Bennett’s family.
Bennett began serving both sides.
The doctor had spent weeks trying to survive between two Vale brothers.
“Give me Lucas,” Hannah said.
Bennett looked at her.
“You were never supposed to become involved.”
“You involved me before Grace died.”
“I was trying to protect him.”
“You kidnapped him.”
“To trade him for my daughter.”
Julian’s remaining men had taken Bennett’s twenty-year-old daughter.
Lucas was his bargaining chip.
Hannah’s anger softened into horror.
“You’re a father.”
Bennett’s eyes filled.
“Yes.”
“Then you know Adrian.”
Bennett looked toward him.
Adrian lowered his weapon.
Every guard stared.
“Where is your daughter?” Adrian asked.
Bennett hesitated.
“Brooklyn.”
“Give me my son. I’ll get her.”
“Why would you?”
“Because nobody else loses a child.”
Silence.
Bennett began crying.
Then he handed Lucas to Hannah.
She held him against her chest.
He was cold and terrified but alive.
Adrian crossed the room.
Hannah expected him to strike Bennett.
Instead Adrian took Lucas.
He pressed his forehead against his son’s.
And sobbed.
Not quietly this time.
Nobody looked away.
Hours later, Marco’s team recovered Bennett’s daughter alive.
Bennett surrendered.
He would face charges.
But Adrian arranged attorneys for his daughter and ensured Julian’s remaining men could never reach her.
At sunrise, they returned home.
Hannah sat beside Adrian in the nursery.
Lucas slept between them.
“He’ll accept bottles now,” she said.
“I know.”
“You don’t need me here anymore.”
Adrian looked at her.
“Lucas may not.”
The words hurt.
Then he continued.
“But I do.”
Hannah smiled sadly.
“Adrian.”
“As family.”
She relaxed.
He touched Lucas’s tiny hand.
“You walked into this house as a stranger. You’re leaving it as a Vale, whether you like the name or not.”
“I’m keeping Brooks.”
“I assumed you would.”
“Good.”
“And I’m reopening your bakery.”
“You are absolutely not.”
“I already bought the building.”
Hannah stared.
“You did what?”
“For investment purposes.”
“You are the most irritating man alive.”
Lucas woke.
And for the first time since entering the Vale estate, Hannah laughed without immediately feeling guilty afterward.
Grace was still gone.
Isabel was still gone.
May you like
But laughter had returned.
And neither of them apologized for it.
