Chapter 8 - The Betrayal at Blackwater Pier

Samuel Price was found dead before noon.

His body lay inside a rented apartment outside Gary, Indiana.

The local police initially classified the death as a suspected homicide.

Mateo obtained confirmation through a contact in law enforcement.

Dante stared at the report.

Another witness silenced.

Another piece of the past buried.

Emma stood beside him.

“We're running out of people who know the truth.”

Dante nodded.

“Then we stop chasing people.”

“What do we chase?”

“Money.”

Rebecca Shaw had spent the night examining Blackwater Holdings.

She discovered a series of payments made to an unidentified beneficiary.

The transfers began in 2001.

They continued every month for twenty-five years.

The beneficiary used a private account in Switzerland.

But the account had been opened with documents identifying the recipient as Elena Romano.

Emma stared at the screen.

“That's impossible.”

Rebecca nodded.

“Unless someone stole her identity.”

Dante leaned forward.

“Can you trace the withdrawals?”

“Some.”

“Where?”

Rebecca enlarged a map.

“Chicago. Milwaukee. Indianapolis. And several locations near Blackwater Pier.”

Mateo frowned.

“That's Vincent's shipping terminal.”

Rebecca nodded.

“Exactly.”

The plan was simple.

Too simple, Emma thought.

Dante would arrange a meeting with Vincent at Blackwater Pier.

He would claim he wanted to negotiate.

Meanwhile, Rebecca would deliver the financial evidence to federal investigators.

Judge Whitcomb had already contacted a prosecutor willing to reopen the case.

Emma would remain at the safe house.

At least, that was the plan.

Until she received a message.

COME TO BLACKWATER PIER AT 8 P.M. IF YOU WANT TO KNOW WHAT REALLY HAPPENED TO ROSE CALDWELL.

Attached was a photograph.

Rose lay in a hospital bed.

A man stood beside her.

His face was partially hidden.

But Emma recognized the silver ring on his hand.

Vincent Romano.

Emma's stomach twisted.

Her mother had died after months of cancer treatment.

But what if Vincent had been there?

What if Rose had tried to speak?

What if the truth had been waiting in that hospital room all along?

Emma showed the message to Dante.

His expression hardened.

“It's bait.”

“I know.”

“Then we're not going.”

Emma looked at him.

“You were already planning to meet Vincent there.”

“Yes.”

“So why can't I come?”

“Because he wants you.”

“Then perhaps we should find out why.”

Dante stared.

She held his gaze.

Finally, he nodded.

“But you stay beside me.”

Emma smiled faintly.

“That's what I asked you to do.”

Blackwater Pier stretched into Lake Michigan beneath a cold autumn sky.

Cargo cranes towered over rows of shipping containers.

The air smelled of diesel and wet concrete.

Dante arrived in a black SUV with Emma and Mateo.

Two additional vehicles followed at a distance.

Vincent stood beneath a warehouse light.

He wore a dark overcoat.

His silver hair moved in the wind.

Beside him stood a woman in her sixties.

She was thin.

Pale.

Her face was partially hidden beneath a scarf.

Emma stared.

The woman looked familiar.

Not because Emma knew her.

Because she resembled photographs of Elena Romano.

Dante stopped walking.

For a moment, the world seemed to tilt.

“Mother?”

The woman raised her head.

Her eyes filled with tears.

“Dante.”

Emma gripped his arm.

Vincent smiled.

“Surprised?”

Dante could barely speak.

“You're alive?”

The woman stepped forward.

Then she shook her head.

“No.”

Dante froze.

Vincent laughed softly.

“Let me introduce you to someone.”

He placed a hand on the woman's shoulder.

“This is Lucia Bellini.”

Emma frowned.

The name meant nothing.

But Dante remembered it.

Lucia had been Elena's younger cousin.

She had disappeared shortly after Elena's death.

Vincent continued.

“Lucia was useful. She looked enough like Elena to convince certain bankers that your mother was still alive.”

Dante's expression hardened.

“You used her identity.”

Vincent smiled.

“For twenty-five years.”

Lucia began crying.

“He threatened my son.”

Vincent turned sharply.

“Be quiet.”

Dante stepped forward.

“Don't speak to her like that.”

Vincent laughed.

“Still pretending you're the good man?”

Dante said nothing.

Vincent's smile faded.

“Your father was weak. Your mother was foolish. They wanted to destroy everything our family built.”

“You mean everything you stole.”

Vincent's eyes narrowed.

“I saved this family.”

“You poisoned my mother.”

Silence.

The wind moved through the containers.

Vincent looked toward the lake.

“Your mother should have minded her own business.”

Emma felt sick.

Dante's hands curled into fists.

“You killed her.”

Vincent shrugged.

“She was dying anyway.”

Dante lunged.

Mateo caught his arm.

“Boss.”

Vincent smiled.

“There he is. The Romano temper.”

Dante forced himself to stop.

Emma stepped forward.

“And Rose Caldwell?”

Vincent looked at her.

For the first time, something like regret crossed his face.

“Rose was stubborn.”

“What did you do to her?”

“She could have lived comfortably.”

Emma's voice rose.

“What did you do?”

Vincent looked away.

“She refused my money.”

Emma stared.

“She was dying.”

“Yes.”

“And you threatened her?”

Vincent's expression hardened.

“She had evidence.”

“What evidence?”

“The original ledger.”

Dante looked at Emma.

Vincent continued.

“She hid it before she died. I spent six years searching for it.”

Emma suddenly understood.

The storage unit.

The diary.

The photographs.

Her mother's old belongings.

Vincent had not been trying to stop them from finding the truth.

He had been trying to discover where Rose hid the evidence.

Emma looked at him.

“You never found it.”

Vincent smiled.

“No.”

He raised one hand.

Armed men emerged between the containers.

Mateo immediately stepped in front of Dante.

Vincent's voice became cold.

“But you're going to tell me where it is.”

The first shot came from behind the warehouse.

A security guard fell.

Mateo pushed Emma behind a concrete barrier.

Dante drew his weapon.

Gunfire echoed across the pier.

Emma crouched beside Lucia.

The older woman was shaking.

“Are you hurt?” Emma asked.

Lucia shook her head.

“Vincent has my son.”

Emma stared.

“Where?”

“I don't know.”

Another shot struck the barrier.

Lucia grabbed Emma's sleeve.

“Listen to me. Your mother didn't hide the ledger in the storage unit.”

Emma leaned closer.

“What?”

“She gave it to someone.”

“Who?”

Lucia looked toward Dante.

“Salvatore.”

Emma froze.

“But he died eleven years ago.”

Lucia nodded.

“He hid it where Vincent would never look.”

“Where?”

Lucia whispered:

“In the one place Dante refuses to visit.”

Before Emma could ask another question, an explosion shook the pier.

A cargo container burst into flames.

Smoke rolled across the concrete.

Mateo shouted, “MOVE!”

Dante grabbed Emma's hand.

They ran toward the SUV.

Behind them, Vincent disappeared into the smoke.

And as the vehicles raced away, Emma looked at Dante.

“Where is your father buried?”

Dante's face went pale.

“Why?”

May you like

She swallowed.

“Because I think he took the truth to his grave.”
