Chapter 7 - THE NIGHT THE MORETTI EMPIRE FELL

By the following Monday, Dante Moretti had lost control of three companies, two private banking relationships, and the loyalty of men who had once sworn they would die for him.
The collapse began at 8:03 a.m.
A federal investigative team arrived at Moretti Logistics headquarters carrying warrants for financial records and electronic devices.
At 8:19, the company's outside auditors notified the board of suspected fraudulent transfers.
At 8:41, two major lenders suspended access to additional credit.
By nine o'clock, financial news outlets were reporting that one of Chicago's most influential transportation companies was under investigation.
Dante watched the headlines from his office.
Peter Callahan stood across from him.
“Sir, we can challenge the account restrictions.”
Dante shook his head.
“No.”
Peter blinked.
“No?”
“Preserve the records. Cooperate with lawful requests. Nobody deletes anything.”
Michael Grant entered carrying another folder.
“Rafael's attorneys have filed an emergency petition challenging your authority as chief executive.”
Dante almost laughed.
“He's trying to take over a company he helped destroy.”
“That's the idea.”
Dante looked toward the window.
For twenty years, he had built his reputation around a single belief.
Power meant never having to surrender.
Now the empire that had defined him was falling apart.
And the only thing he could think about was a woman in a hospital bed who no longer wanted to see him.
Lucia learned about the federal investigation while holding Isabella against her chest for the first time.
The NICU nurse had helped position the tiny baby for supervised skin-to-skin contact.
Isabella was stable enough for a brief session.
Lucia sat in a reclining chair, wrapped in a warm blanket, listening to her daughter's delicate breathing.
It was the happiest moment she had experienced in months.
Then Gerald entered.
He waited until the nurse stepped away.
“The authorities have begun executing warrants,” he said quietly.
Lucia closed her eyes.
“Dante?”
“He's cooperating through counsel.”
She looked down at Isabella.
“Good.”
Alexander stood nearby.
“Your audit request helped expose the transfers.”
Lucia shook her head.
“I didn't do this to destroy Dante.”
“I know.”
“I wanted to protect her.”
She kissed Isabella's forehead.
“That's still all I want.”
Gerald hesitated.
“There's another development.”
Lucia looked up.
“What?”
“The trust created in Isabella's name has been challenged. We're seeking an order preventing Rafael from exercising any authority over it.”
Alexander frowned.
“Can he use the child's assets?”
“Not while the court's temporary restrictions are in place. But the trust documents raise questions about who intended to benefit from the arrangement.”
Lucia stared at him.
“Rafael wanted control of the company.”
“Yes.”
“Then why put Isabella's name on the documents?”
Gerald's expression darkened.
“Because a child can be used as a legal pretext for people who want to control assets without appearing to own them.”
Lucia held Isabella tighter.
Her daughter had been alive less than a week.
And already someone had tried to turn her into a financial instrument.
“No,” Lucia whispered.
Alexander leaned closer.
“What?”
Lucia looked up.
“They're never using her again.”
At noon, Claudia Moretti received a visit from federal investigators.
She was staying at a private residence belonging to a longtime family associate.
She had dismissed most of the household staff.
Only her personal assistant remained.
When the investigators arrived, Claudia was seated beside a fireplace.
Her attorney stood near the doorway.
An agent introduced herself.
“Mrs. Moretti, I'm Special Agent Natalie Brooks.”
Claudia smiled politely.
“I assume this concerns my son's business.”
“It concerns several businesses, financial transfers, and possible interference with a federal investigation.”
Claudia's smile faded.
“I have nothing to say without counsel.”
“That's your right.”
Agent Brooks placed a photograph on the table.
It showed Daniel Mercer entering Mercy Ridge Medical Center.
Claudia glanced at it.
“Do you recognize him?”
“No.”
The agent placed a second photograph beside it.
This one showed Claudia and Mercer leaving a private medical conference eighteen months earlier.
Claudia's expression remained composed.
But her fingers tightened around the armrest.
Agent Brooks watched.
“Would you like to reconsider?”
Claudia's attorney interrupted.
“My client will not answer.”
Brooks nodded.
Then she placed a third document on the table.
A record of payments from the Westlake Medical Research Foundation to Mercer.
The account funding those payments was connected to Northbridge Advisory.
Claudia stared.
For the first time, she looked old.
“Where did you get that?”
Brooks answered.
“Someone decided to cooperate.”
Claudia's eyes widened.
“Who?”
The agent closed the folder.
“That will become clear in time.”
At 3:27 p.m., Vivian Ross entered a federal field office accompanied by an attorney.
She had not slept.
Her makeup could not conceal the bruised shadows beneath her eyes.
She carried a small flash drive.
Agent Brooks met her in an interview room.
Vivian sat down.
“I want protection.”
Brooks folded her hands.
“Protection from whom?”
Vivian swallowed.
“Rafael Moretti.”
“Why?”
“Because I know what he did.”
Brooks waited.
Vivian looked toward the closed door.
“He hired Mercer.”
“For what purpose?”
Vivian's eyes filled.
“To make Lucia Moretti disappear.”
The room went silent.
Brooks leaned forward.
“Did he specifically order her death?”
Vivian hesitated.
“I heard him say she couldn't be allowed to testify about the accounts.”
“That's not the same as an explicit murder order.”
Vivian nodded.
“I know.”
“Then tell me exactly what you heard.”
For the next two hours, Vivian described secret meetings, forged documents, and the plan to lure Dante away from the hospital.
She admitted accepting money.
She admitted manipulating Dante.
She admitted answering Lucia's phone call and mocking her while she was in medical distress.
Agent Brooks listened without sympathy.
When Vivian finished, she placed the flash drive on the table.
“What's this?”
“A recording.”
“Of whom?”
Vivian looked up.
“Rafael and Claudia.”
Brooks reached for the drive.
Vivian caught her wrist.
“There's something you need to understand.”
The agent withdrew her hand.
“What?”
Vivian's voice trembled.
“Rafael isn't trying to steal the Moretti empire anymore.”
Brooks frowned.
“Then what is he trying to do?”
Vivian whispered, “He's trying to make Dante look like the man who ordered everything.”
That evening, Dante received a message from an unfamiliar number.
It contained a video.
He opened it.
The footage showed Lucia leaving a prenatal appointment several weeks earlier.
A black SUV followed her vehicle through downtown Chicago.
The recording ended outside the Moretti estate.
A second message appeared.
You were never supposed to know.
Dante stared at the screen.
Then a third message arrived.
Ask Michael Grant why he was the first person to find your wife.
Dante looked across the office.
Michael stood near the door.
For eleven years, Dante had trusted him with his life.
Now someone was suggesting that trust had been a mistake.
Dante held up the phone.
“Michael.”
The security chief turned.
“Boss?”
Dante's voice was deadly quiet.
“Tell me exactly how you knew Lucia was bleeding before anyone called an ambulance.”
May you like
Michael went pale.
And Dante knew immediately that there was something his oldest friend had never told him.
