Chapter 9 - THE FATHER WHO CHOSE LOVE OVER HIS EMPIRE

Lorenzo had built his reputation on fear.
He had spent half his life believing that the strongest man was the one who could hurt his enemies before they hurt him.
But standing beside Hunter in the safe house kitchen, he understood something he had never allowed himself to admit.
Fear had not protected Sophia.
Fear had not protected Leo.
And fear had certainly not protected Hunter.
For the first time, he began to wonder whether the empire he had inherited was worth keeping.
Marco arrived with a federal prosecutor named Evelyn Grant.
Lorenzo disliked her immediately.
She wore a navy suit, carried no visible weapon, and looked at him without the slightest hesitation.
"Mr. Rossi," she said, "I believe your family has been targeted by an organized medical fraud operation."
Lorenzo folded his arms.
"And I believe you've been trying to put me in prison for six years."
"Both things can be true."
Hunter almost smiled.
Grant opened a file.
"Adrian Mercer used his charitable medical network to conceal unauthorized reproductive procedures, falsified patient records, and financial crimes."
Lorenzo looked at the documents.
"What does he want with Leo?"
"We believe Mercer is trying to recover evidence connected to the clinic's research."
"Why Leo?"
"We're still establishing that."
Hunter stepped forward.
"What happened to my daughter?"
Grant's expression softened.
"Miss Higgins, we've reopened the investigation into your assault and the circumstances surrounding Lily's death. We have evidence Tommy Vance was paid shortly before the attack."
Hunter felt her knees weaken.
Lorenzo moved beside her.
"Paid by who?"
"We're tracing the transfer."
"Was he supposed to kill her?"
"We don't know yet."
Hunter stared at the prosecutor.
"Can you prove what happened?"
"We intend to try."
Grant turned toward Lorenzo.
"We also need your cooperation."
He laughed bitterly.
"You want me to become an informant."
"I want you to help dismantle the people responsible for threatening these children."
Lorenzo's expression hardened.
"And what do you want in exchange?"
"Records. Financial evidence. Testimony where necessary. We can discuss protection arrangements and legal consequences through counsel."
Lorenzo looked toward Leo's room.
His son was sleeping.
Alive.
Recovering.
For the first time, Lorenzo imagined a future where Leo did not grow up surrounded by armed men.
Where he could go to school without bodyguards.
Where he could choose what kind of man to become.
He thought of Sophia.
Of Hunter.
Of the blood on his own hands.
Then he said, "I'll cooperate."
Marco stared at him.
"Boss?"
Lorenzo didn't look away from Grant.
"I'm done making my son pay for my father's empire."
Grant nodded.
"Then we have work to do."
That evening, Hunter found Lorenzo sitting on the nursery floor.
Leo lay on a blanket, reaching toward a stuffed rabbit.
Lorenzo held the toy above him.
This time, he wasn't holding it like a weapon.
Hunter smiled.
"You're getting better."
"At rabbits?"
"At being a father."
He looked up.
"Do you really think so?"
"Yes."
Lorenzo lowered the toy.
"Hunter, I need to tell you something."
Her smile faded.
"What?"
He stood.
"I've been afraid to say it."
"You're not usually afraid of much."
"I'm afraid of losing you."
Hunter's breath caught.
Lorenzo approached slowly.
"I don't know what happened at that clinic. I don't know what Sophia is hiding. I don't know whether tomorrow will bring answers or more danger."
He paused.
"But I know that when you walked into this house, you reminded me how to care about someone without trying to control them."
Hunter's eyes filled.
"Lorenzo..."
"I know you're grieving. I know this isn't simple."
He took her hand.
"I'm not asking you to forget Lily. I'm not asking you to replace Sophia. I'm not asking you to become anything you don't want to be."
Hunter looked at him.
"What are you asking?"
His voice softened.
"Whether there's a chance we could build something honest out of all this."
For a moment, she couldn't speak.
Then she stepped closer.
"I don't know what the future looks like."
"Neither do I."
"But I want to find out."
Lorenzo touched her cheek.
He waited.
Hunter leaned forward.
Their first kiss was gentle.
Tentative.
Nothing like the violence that had surrounded their lives.
When they separated, Leo made an indignant little sound from the floor.
Hunter laughed through her tears.
Lorenzo looked down.
"Apparently, he objects."
"He's used to being the center of attention."
"He gets that from his father."
Hunter laughed again.
And for one beautiful moment, they were simply a man, a woman, and a baby in a quiet room.
Then Marco appeared in the doorway.
His face was pale.
"Boss. We found Tommy."
Lorenzo's expression changed.
"Where?"
"Federal agents arrested him outside Albany."
"And?"
Marco hesitated.
"He gave a statement."
Hunter stepped forward.
"What did he say?"
Marco looked at her.
Then at Lorenzo.
"He says he was ordered to make Hunter lose her baby."
The room went silent.
Hunter covered her mouth.
Marco continued.
"But he claims the person who paid him wasn't Adrian Mercer."
Lorenzo stared.
"Who was it?"
May you like
Marco swallowed.
"He says it was Sophia."
