Chapter 1 - While I Was Fighting to Live

My husband married his mistress while I was being rushed into emergency surgery with a ruptured artery near my heart, and he never answered the hospital’s calls. He thought he was publicly beginning a new life with the woman he truly wanted, but he had no idea how much of the life around him had never actually belonged to him. And before that night was over, I would ask for one locked document case that changed the way I saw everything.
My name is Genevieve, and the day Julian underestimated me was the day he destroyed himself.
“If we don’t operate right now, she could die in less than an hour... and her husband isn’t answering his phone.”
That was the last thing I heard before they wheeled me toward the emergency operating room.
I was twenty-nine.
My blood pressure was crashing.
Every breath felt like burning wire around my lungs.
Beside me, a nurse called Julian again.
“Julian Vance, this is Northwestern Memorial Hospital calling regarding your wife, Genevieve Vance. This is a medical emergency. Please contact us immediately.”
She hung up.
Nothing.
Then another nurse looked at her phone.
Her expression changed.
“Julian Vance, CEO of Vance Global, is getting married right now.”
For one second, I thought there had to be another Julian Vance.
Then she turned the screen.
And I saw my husband.
Black tuxedo.
White roses.
Nearly three hundred guests.
And beside him stood Victoria Hayes.
The woman I had personally hired three years earlier.
She was wearing ivory.
A wedding gown.
A cathedral-length veil.
My heart monitor started shrieking.
“Mrs. Vance?”
I couldn’t answer.
Someone adjusted my oxygen mask.
“Where is the husband?”
“Still no response.”
“Forget him. We don’t have time.”
The surgeon leaned over me.
“The risk of mortality is over fifty percent.”
A clipboard appeared.
My fingers barely worked.
The pen slipped once before the nurse placed it back between them.
So I signed.
My own surgical consent.
My husband was less than two miles away holding another woman’s hands while I signed a document acknowledging that I might die.
The anesthesia mask lowered.
Before everything disappeared, I caught one final glimpse of the livestream.
Julian was kissing Victoria beneath falling white flower petals. :contentReference[oaicite:0]{index=0}
Then there was nothing.
When I woke, it was night.
“The surgery was successful,” the nurse told me. “It was very close, but you made it.”
I asked for my phone.
Forty-seven missed calls.
None from Julian.
I called him anyway.
Voicemail.
Again.
Voicemail.
On the third attempt, I stopped.
Instead, I called Eleanor, my personal assistant.
She answered immediately.
“Genevieve?”
Her voice broke.
“Oh my God. Genevieve.”
“I’m alive.”
Then I asked the question I already knew the answer to.
“Is the wedding over?”
Silence.
“Yes.”
“Send me the video.”
Thirty seconds later, the link appeared.
I watched Julian standing before hundreds of people while a reporter asked about his “previous marriage.”
Previous.
I was still his legal wife.
Then Julian smiled.
“Genevieve and I had been over emotionally for a long time.”
The reporter turned toward Victoria.
“And Victoria?”
Julian looked at her with an expression I knew too well.
“She’s the woman I truly wanted.”
I stared at the screen.
This was the man I had built beside.
The man whose investor presentations I had helped prepare.
The man I had introduced to people who opened doors for him.
And Victoria?
I had hired her.
Defended her.
Given her a second chance.
I closed the video.
Eleanor was still on the phone.
“Genevieve?”
“I need you to do something.”
“Anything.”
“Don’t contact Julian again.”
She hesitated.
“All right.”
“Don’t tell anyone where I am.”
“Okay.”
“Tomorrow morning, bring me the blue document case from the study.”
“The locked one?”
“Yes.”
A pause.
“What else?”
“My passport.”
I took a careful breath.
“My personal financial files.”
Another breath.
“The deeds, purchase records, insurance inventories, and the prenuptial agreement.”
Eleanor went completely silent.
Then she understood.
And for the first time that day, so did I.
Julian could have the life he had chosen.
May you like
But he was about to learn that choosing another woman did not mean he got to keep everything I had built around him.
