The Iron on the Table / Chapter 8 / 10

Chapter 8 - The Price of the TruthThe investigation lasted months.

Daniel confessed.

Vivienne eventually confessed too.

She had believed Edward would protect her.

She had believed money could buy forgiveness.

She had been wrong.

The court restored every right to me.

The trust was frozen until the investigation ended.

Reid returned to military service temporarily.

But he no longer disappeared without a word.

Every morning, he called.

Every evening, he came home when he could.

Our daughter grew stronger.

We named her Evelyn Grace.

Evelyn for the woman I had once dreamed of becoming before fear changed me.

Grace because surviving what we survived felt like a kind of grace.

One afternoon, I received a letter from Vivienne.

I almost threw it away.

Instead, I opened it.

There was no excuse.

No demand.

Only one sentence:

I became so afraid of losing the Marlowe name that I forgot what being a mother meant.

I folded the letter.

I did not forgive her.

Not yet.

Maybe not ever.

But I no longer needed her apology to heal.

Healing belonged to me.

One year after Reid returned, he took me back to the kitchen.

The same kitchen.

The same yellow curtains.

The same sunlight.

He had repaired the wall where the iron had once scorched the paint.

Then he handed me a small wooden box.

Inside was a key.

“What is this?”

“The nursery.”

I laughed.

“The nursery has always been upstairs.”

“Not that nursery.”

He opened the back door.

Beyond the garden stood a small cottage.

Inside was a studio.

Paintings covered the walls.

Photographs.

Our wedding.

My pregnancy.

Evelyn sleeping.

Reid coming home.

“I built this for you,” he said.

“Why?”

“Because you spent too long being told what you couldn't do.”

I cried.

He wrapped his arms around me.

“You can do anything now.”

Evelyn toddled into the room.

She held a tiny yellow flower.

She handed it to me.

Then she reached for Reid.

He lifted her.

May you like

I watched them.

For the first time, the house felt completely ours.
