Chapter 8 - THE TRUTH EMMA NEVER EXPECTED

Dominic did not go to Emma's apartment after discovering the repair report.
He wanted to.
He wanted to tell her everything, ask for forgiveness, and explain that he had finally begun to understand what he had done.
But he knew that showing up at her door with another crisis would only prove that he still considered her responsible for helping him survive his own mistakes.
So he called Rebecca.
"I need to speak with Emma about the pregnancy."
"She will decide when she's ready to speak with you."
"I understand."
"Do you?"
He closed his eyes.
"Yes."
Rebecca paused.
"Then I'll pass along your request. Don't contact her directly unless she agrees."
For the first time, Dominic accepted a boundary without trying to negotiate it away.
Emma agreed to meet him in Rebecca's office two days later.
She arrived carrying a folder of medical documents. Dominic stood when she entered, but he did not approach her.
"Thank you for coming," he said.
She sat down.
"You know about the baby."
"Yes."
"How?"
He explained the investigator's report and admitted that he had learned the information through a route he should never have used.
Emma's face hardened.
"Even now, you couldn't leave my private life alone."
"You're right."
She had prepared herself for denial. She had expected him to say he was entitled to know because he was the father.
His immediate agreement unsettled her more than an argument would have.
"I won't ask you to come home," he continued. "I won't demand access to your medical records. I won't make decisions about the pregnancy without you."
"Why are you telling me this?"
"Because I should have respected your choices from the beginning."
Emma looked down at her hands.
"That would have been a good thing to learn before you spent three years pretending I was invisible."
"I know."
"No, Dominic. I don't think you do."
He swallowed.
"I remember one night when you sat beside me in bed and asked whether I still loved you. You were crying. I heard every word, and I pretended to be asleep."
His voice cracked.
"I told myself you would stop asking if I didn't answer. I made you feel ashamed for needing your own husband."
Emma's eyes filled with tears.
"That was the night I decided to stop asking."
He stared at her.
"I didn't know."
"Exactly."
The silence between them was no longer a trick. It was the consequence of everything he had refused to say.
After a moment, Emma opened her folder.
"I'm keeping the baby. I haven't decided what kind of relationship you'll have with our child, but I won't prevent you from being involved if you can show me that you understand what responsibility means."
Dominic nodded.
"Thank you."
"Don't thank me yet. I have conditions. All communication about the baby goes through Rebecca for now. No surprise visits. No gifts sent through your staff. No using your money to influence my decisions."
"I agree."
"And if you ever pretend not to hear me again, there won't be another conversation."
"I understand."
Emma closed the folder.
"There is something else. Margaret knew I was pregnant before you did."
"I found out."
"How?"
"She admitted it."
Emma's expression changed.
"Then why did she allow me to believe she thought I was useless?"
Dominic looked ashamed.
"Because she believed Vanessa's pregnancy would secure the family's future. She wanted an heir and thought our marriage was failing."
Emma laughed once, without humor.
"Your mother turned my pregnancy into a competition I didn't even know I was in."
"I know."
"No. You know now."
He accepted the correction.
Before leaving, Dominic gave her a sealed envelope.
"These are copies of the financial transfers to Vanessa. Gabriel found them in the family trust records. I thought you should have them because they may help explain why Margaret interfered in our marriage."
Emma took the envelope but did not open it.
"Why are you helping me?"
"Because you deserve the truth. Even if it means you never come back."
For the first time since she had left, Emma believed he might mean it.
That evening, she reviewed the documents with Rebecca.
The payments were larger than she expected. Some had been made to Vanessa personally. Others had gone to a company registered under a different name.
One payment had been made to a fertility clinic.
Emma read the entry twice.
"Why would Margaret pay a fertility clinic?"
Rebecca examined the supporting document.
"I can't tell from this alone. It may relate to Vanessa's pregnancy, but we need independent confirmation."
They contacted a lawyer representing the clinic and requested that any relevant records be preserved.
The next morning, the lawyer called back.
He could not disclose another patient's medical information without authorization, but he confirmed that the payment was associated with a treatment program that predated Vanessa's return to Chicago.
Emma felt a chill.
"Does that mean the pregnancy was planned?"
"It means we don't yet know what the payment covered," Rebecca replied. "We need more evidence."
Later that day, Gabriel called.
"We found something else in Anthony's files," he said. "A letter to Margaret written a week before the accident."
"What does it say?"
"Anthony was planning to change the family trust. He intended to give Daniel a share of the estate and remove Margaret's authority over several accounts."
Emma leaned back in her chair.
"That gives her a motive."
"It gives investigators a reason to ask questions. It doesn't prove she caused the accident."
"Then we need to find out who did."
Gabriel hesitated.
"Dominic wants to make a statement to the police. He's prepared to hand over everything we've found."
Emma looked out the window.
For the first time, Dominic was choosing truth even when it threatened his own family.
She wanted to believe that meant something.
Then her phone buzzed.
An unknown number.
A message appeared.
Your baby isn't the only child Margaret has tried to control. Ask Dominic why his father was carrying a second set of keys the night he died.
Emma's blood ran cold.
She forwarded the message to Rebecca.

A minute later, another arrived.
The second key opened a room nobody was supposed to find.
