Chapter 1 - THREE WORDS THAT DESTROYED A MARRIAGE

"My husband told his executive assistant, ""I choose you,"" on the very night I discovered I was pregnant. Two years later, that choice would return to him in a way he could never have imagined. But as he prepared to end our marriage, he had no idea what I was hiding in the pocket of my robe.

My name is Harper, and the day Ethan underestimated me was the day he destroyed himself.

I was standing at the top of our staircase.

A pregnancy test was tucked inside my cream silk robe.

Two pink lines.

After three years of fertility treatments, failed procedures, and countless disappointments, I was finally carrying the baby we had prayed for.

I had been rushing downstairs to tell my husband.

Then I heard his voice.

""I can't keep doing this, Jessica.""

I froze.

Jessica Reynolds.

His executive assistant.

The woman I had welcomed into our home, served Thanksgiving dinner, and trusted enough to help choose my husband's birthday gift.

I gripped the staircase railing.

Ethan's office door was partly closed.

""I'm telling her tonight.""

My heart began pounding.

""The lawyer already has the paperwork.""

Then came the words that changed everything.

""I want a divorce.""

I couldn't move.

Downstairs, my husband was calmly preparing to destroy the marriage I had spent six years believing in.

And he wasn't finished.

""She wants a baby more than she wants me.""

My hand moved toward my stomach.

Then he said something I would never forget.

""I'm tired of living in a house that feels like a memorial for a child who never existed.""

A child who never existed.

I pressed my lips together.

There was a baby inside me.

Our baby.

And the man who had cried beside me after failed fertility treatments was using our heartbreak to justify leaving me.

Then Jessica asked the question I was terrified to hear.

""Do you love her?""

Silence.

I closed my eyes.

Ethan answered.

""I choose you.""

Three words.

That was all it took.

For one moment, I wanted to rush downstairs and show him the test.

I imagined his expression changing.

The shock.

The disbelief.

Maybe he would beg me to forgive him.

Maybe he would stay.

But I couldn't forget what he had just said.

He hadn't chosen me.

He had chosen Jessica.

And I didn't want our child to become the reason he remained in a marriage he had already abandoned.

So I walked quietly back upstairs.

Fifteen minutes later, Ethan entered our bedroom.

His tie was gone.

His shirt collar was open.

His expression was carefully arranged into sadness.

""Harper. We need to talk.""

""No.""

He blinked.

""You need to talk. I need to listen.""

He hesitated.

""You want a divorce,"" I said.

The color drained from his face.

""You heard that?""

""I heard enough.""

He tried explaining.

""It's more complicated than that.""

I looked at him.

""Infidelity usually becomes complicated when the person committing it has to explain it.""

He looked away.

Then he admitted he had been unhappy.

""So have I,"" I replied.

""You never told me.""

""You never asked.""

For several seconds, he said nothing.

Then he brought up our struggle to have a child.

""Jessica understands me.""

""Does she?""

""She sees me as more than...""

He stopped.

""More than what?""

His answer hurt worse than I expected.

""More than a husband who failed to give you a child.""

I stared at him.

""I never thought you failed me.""

But he had already made his decision.

I removed my wedding ring and placed it beside his watch.

Ethan watched in disbelief.

""You're not going to fight for us?""

I could hardly believe he was asking.

He had chosen another woman.

He had already contacted a lawyer.

And somehow, he still expected me to beg him to stay.

My fingers slipped into my robe pocket.

They closed around the pregnancy test.

Two pink lines.

The future we had wanted for three years.

For half a second, I almost showed him.

Then I remembered his voice.

""I choose you.""

I let go.

""I'm not fighting,"" I whispered.

His expression shifted.

Confusion.

Irritation.

Then something almost like fear.

""You're being incredibly calm.""

His eyes dropped toward my robe pocket.

My heartbeat kicked once.

He frowned.

May you like

""What are you hiding?""
