THE HEIRS THAT DESTROYED HIM / Chapter 9 / 10

Chapter 9 - The Boardroom Reckoning

By Monday morning, the Voss Meridian boardroom was full.

Martin sat at the head of the table, looking immaculate.

His mother sat beside him.

Three senior directors occupied the opposite side, while the company's general counsel reviewed the agenda.

Richard arrived five minutes late.

Martin smiled.

“I'm surprised you came.”

“I wouldn't miss this.”

Then the doors opened.

I walked in with Margaret.

Anna followed.

And behind us came Clara.

She was carrying the two children.

Martin's expression darkened.

“What is this?”

“A board meeting,” Margaret replied. “We were invited.”

“You were not.”

The chairman, Robert Hayes, raised his hand.

“Let them speak.”

Martin looked at me.

“Evelyn, this is a private business matter.”

“Then you shouldn't have used our marriage as a corporate instrument.”

I placed a folder on the table.

The first document was the fertility report.

The second was the forged medical record bearing my name.

The third was the donor agreement.

The room went silent.

Martin stood.

“These documents are incomplete.”

Margaret opened another folder.

“We also have authenticated billing records, electronic communications, and a recording of the late Edward Voss discussing the succession arrangement.”

One director removed his glasses.

“Martin, is any of this true?”

Martin looked around the room.

“Richard was involved in a private family arrangement. Evelyn has taken personal information out of context.”

Richard stood.

“No. You lied to me, too.”

Martin turned sharply.

“Sit down.”

Richard didn't.

“You promised me shares. You promised me a place in the company. You told me the children would never be used against me.”

Martin's expression hardened.

“You agreed to everything.”

“I agreed because you told me it was the only way I could have a family without destroying yours.”

The room erupted in whispers.

Then Clara stepped forward.

“I have something to add.”

She placed a flash drive on the table.

Martin stared at it.

“Where did you get that?”

“Your safe.”

She turned to the chairman.

“This contains the original documents, including the forged agreement and the private trust instructions.”

Martin lunged toward the drive.

Two directors stood between them.

“Enough,” the chairman said.

Margaret connected the drive to the conference room screen.

The documents appeared.

Then the recording began.

Martin's voice filled the room.

“Evelyn will be gone by then. She has no children, no position in the company, and no reason to fight.”

Nobody spoke.

When the recording ended, Martin looked around.

“You're all making a mistake.”

Robert Hayes folded his hands.

“Perhaps. But we will not be making it with company money.”

He announced an immediate suspension of Martin's executive authority pending an independent investigation.

The directors voted unanimously.

Martin's face lost its color.

Then Margaret presented the codicil.

She explained that Edward Voss had left a controlling interest in the family's investment company to Katherine Bell or her lawful descendants.

Anna stood.

“My mother was Katherine Bell.”

Martin stared at her.

For the first time, his composure completely collapsed.

“You have no proof.”

“We have her birth records,” Margaret said. “And a letter from your father.”

Anna stepped closer.

“My mother spent her entire life being treated like a secret. I'm not going to let you erase her again.”

The chairman called for a recess.

But before anyone could leave, the boardroom doors opened.

A man in his late twenties stood in the doorway.

He was carrying a brown envelope.

He looked directly at Anna.

“I'm sorry I'm late.”

Anna stared.

“Daniel?”

He nodded.

“I think we need to talk about our father.”

The room went completely silent.

Martin gripped the edge of the table.

“Who are you?”

The young man looked at him.

“I'm the brother you thought nobody would ever find.”

Then he placed the envelope in front of the chairman.

Inside was a DNA report.

May you like

And the name listed as the biological father wasn't Edward Voss.

It was Martin.
