Chapter 9 - THE CHOICE

Midnight arrived.

Gabriel entered the abandoned warehouse alone.

The ledger was in his hand.

Claire watched from a nearby surveillance vehicle with Mason.

“You stay here,” Mason ordered.

Claire shook her head.

“Eli is my responsibility too.”

Mason smiled faintly.

“You really are impossible.”

“Thank you.”

Inside the warehouse, Damian Cross stood beside Eli's carrier.

The baby was asleep.

Gabriel stopped twenty feet away.

“Let him go.”

Cross smiled.

“You came.”

“You knew I would.”

“I knew you cared.”

Gabriel looked at Eli.

“That's your mistake.”

Cross laughed.

“You think you're different from your father?”

“No.”

Gabriel's voice was calm.

“I'm worse.”

Cross raised a gun.

“Put the ledger down.”

Gabriel obeyed.

Cross walked toward it.

Then Claire stepped from the shadows.

“Damian.”

Gabriel's eyes widened.

“Claire!”

She ignored him.

Cross smiled.

“I was hoping you'd come.”

“You killed my father.”

“Yes.”

“You killed Sophia's friend.”

“Yes.”

“You tried to kill me.”

“Yes.”

Claire's hands trembled.

“But you made one mistake.”

Cross frowned.

“What?”

“You assumed fear would make me stupid.”

She held up her phone.

The recording light was on.

Cross stared.

“You're being recorded.”

He laughed.

“You think that matters?”

Mason stepped from behind him.

“No.”

Cross turned.

Police sirens erupted outside.

Cross's face changed.

Gabriel smiled.

“You're surrounded.”

Cross grabbed Eli's carrier.

Gabriel's expression instantly changed.

“Don't.”

Cross raised the gun.

Claire screamed.

Gabriel moved.

Mason fired.

The gun fell.

Cross collapsed.

The baby began crying.

Gabriel ran to Eli.

He lifted him carefully.

“I'm here.”

Claire rushed forward.

Eli reached for her.

She took him.

The baby immediately stopped crying.

Gabriel looked at Claire.

“You shouldn't have come.”

“I know.”

“You could have died.”

“I know.”

“You scared ten years off my life.”

She smiled through tears.

“You don't look ten years older.”

He laughed.

Then police entered.

The ledger was turned over.

Evidence from the Black Ravens was finally enough to dismantle the network.

Gabriel knew his own empire would be investigated too.

He had spent years living in a world he could no longer justify.

So he made a choice.

He cooperated.

Not because he was suddenly innocent.

But because Claire had shown him something he had forgotten.

Power meant nothing if it destroyed the people you loved.

Months passed.

Gabriel dismantled the illegal side of his organization.

His legitimate companies survived.

Some didn't.

He accepted the consequences.

And Claire stayed.

Not because she owed him.

Because she chose him.

One spring morning, Gabriel found Claire in the garden.

Eli was crawling through the grass.

Gabriel sat beside them.

“I have something for you.”

Claire looked suspicious.

“What?”

He handed her a small box.

Inside was a simple ring.

No diamonds.

No extravagant design.

Just a thin gold band.

Claire stared.

“Gabriel.”

“I don't want to own you.”

Her eyes filled.

“I don't want you to owe me.”

She smiled.

“I know.”

“I want you to choose me.”

Claire looked at him.

“You're asking?”

“Yes.”

She laughed.

“That's new.”

“I’m learning.”

She kissed him.

“Yes.”

Gabriel smiled.

“Good.”

Then Eli crawled between them and grabbed Gabriel's tie.

Claire laughed.

“He approves.”

Gabriel looked at the baby.

“He has expensive taste.”

Claire rested her head against Gabriel's shoulder.

For the first time, there were no guards outside.

No enemies.

No secrets.

Just sunlight.

And peace.

May you like

But Gabriel still had one final promise to keep.

He would make sure the family he had left was never again afraid of him.
