Chapter 7 - The Man Who Chose Differently

Luke did not tell Sophia to hide.

He called her.

That distinction mattered.

She listened as he explained Richard Russell's note.

“I'm coming to you,” Luke said.

“No.”

“Sophia.”

“Rachel is here.”

“This involves my family.”

“It involves me.”

Luke went silent.

Then Sophia said, “If we're going to raise a daughter together, you cannot decide that protecting me means controlling me.”

Another silence.

“You're right.”

Sophia nearly dropped the phone.

Luke continued, “What do you want?”

“I want to know everything.”

So for the first time in their marriage, Luke told her everything.

Richard Russell's company was drowning in debt.

Years earlier, Richard had entered several questionable real-estate deals connected to Luke's late father. After Luke inherited control, he severed those arrangements.

Richard blamed him for the collapse that followed.

Now he wanted Luke to purchase failing Russell properties at inflated prices.

“He thinks threatening me will force you?”

“Yes.”

“Will it?”

Luke's answer was immediate.

“I'd give him everything I own if it guaranteed you were safe.”

Sophia closed her eyes.

“But?”

“But men who use threats don't stop after they're paid.”

There was the Luke Morgan Chicago feared.

Cold.

Strategic.

But this time, Sophia understood something she had missed before.

His coldness wasn't absence of emotion.

Sometimes it was too much emotion forced behind a locked door.

“What happens now?”

“We document everything and take it to law enforcement.”

Sophia stared at the phone.

“Who are you?”

Luke almost laughed.

“Trying something different.”

The investigation moved quickly.

Richard had made a mistake.

Several, actually.

His financial interference with Sophia's company had created a paper trail.

Vanessa agreed to cooperate.

So did two former Russell executives.

Within days, authorities had enough to begin investigating extortion, financial misconduct, and related offenses.

Richard disappeared.

That made him more dangerous.

Luke moved temporarily into a hotel rather than the Morgan estate.

Sophia remained at her townhouse with Rachel's team.

Their divorce continued.

That surprised everyone.

Especially Isabella.

“You're still divorcing?” she demanded when Sophia met her at Maya's office.

“Yes.”

“But Luke is changing.”

“He is.”

“Then why punish him?”

Sophia's eyes narrowed.

“Divorce isn't punishment.”

Isabella fell silent.

“I need to know whether Luke can change without believing change earns him ownership of me.”

The older woman absorbed that.

Then, unexpectedly, Isabella nodded.

“I owe you an apology.”

Sophia almost checked whether someone else had entered the room.

Isabella Morgan apologizing was rarer than a Chicago winter without snow.

“I made you compete with a woman who wasn't competing with you.”

“Yes.”

“I thought I was protecting my son.”

“You were protecting the version of him you understood.”

Isabella's eyes filled.

“You're right.”

Sophia softened slightly.

“Why did you dislike me so much?”

Isabella looked genuinely startled.

“I didn't.”

“You had a strange way of showing it.”

“I was afraid of you.”

Sophia stared.

“Me?”

“You made Luke happy.”

“That frightened you?”

“You made him vulnerable.”

Isabella looked down.

“His father taught me vulnerability was dangerous. I believed him for too long.”

Sophia thought about Luke.

Generations of people loving one another badly and calling it protection.

“I don't hate you, Isabella.”

The older woman's eyes lifted.

“But I won't raise my daughter in that house if nothing changes.”

“It will.”

“No.”

Sophia shook her head.

“That's not your promise to make.”

That evening, Luke attended a prenatal appointment for the first time.

Only because Sophia invited him.

He sat beside her while the technician moved the ultrasound wand.

Then the screen filled with their daughter.

Luke stopped breathing.

“There,” the technician said. “That's her hand.”

The tiny fingers moved.

Luke's eyes filled immediately.

Sophia watched him instead of the monitor.

“Would you like to hear her heartbeat?”

“Yes,” Luke whispered.

The room filled with rapid rhythmic sound.

Luke covered his mouth.

Sophia reached for his hand before she could stop herself.

He looked down.

Their fingers were intertwined.

Neither moved.

For one minute, they weren't divorcing.

They weren't Morgan and Bennett.

They were simply two frightened people listening to their child.

Outside the clinic, Luke walked Sophia toward Rachel's car.

“Thank you.”

“For what?”

“Letting me come.”

“She deserves a father.”

Luke looked at her.

“I want to be more than that.”

Sophia's heart tightened.

“Luke.”

“I know.”

He stepped back.

“I won't pressure you.”

She entered the car.

That night, Sophia couldn't sleep.

At 1:12 a.m., her phone rang.

Vanessa.

Sophia answered.

“Hello?”

No response.

Then a muffled sound.

“Vanessa?”

A man's voice came through.

Richard Russell.

“Mrs. Morgan.”

Sophia sat upright.

“Where's Vanessa?”

“My daughter made an unfortunate choice.”

Sophia's blood chilled.

“What did you do?”

“Tell Luke I want the documents Vanessa stole.”

Then Vanessa screamed.

The call ended.

Sophia immediately dialed Luke.

He answered.

She told him.

There was a long silence.

Then Luke said something she never expected.

“Call the police.”

“You're not going after him?”

“No.”

“Why?”

“Because if I go alone, I'm doing exactly what Russell expects.”

Luke's voice steadied.

“And because I made you a promise.”

Sophia closed her eyes.

May you like

For perhaps the first time, Luke Morgan chose trust over control.

And that choice would save Vanessa's life.
