Chapter 1 - THE BABY HE NEVER KNEW EXISTED

The day I called my husband to tell him I was finally pregnant after three years of marriage, he told me he was too busy taking his first love to a famous bakery he'd rented out just for her. The next afternoon, he forced me to eat the strawberry cheesecake he'd bought there, even though he knew I was severely allergic. By the time I reached the emergency room, our baby was gone—and Vincent still had no idea what he had destroyed.
My name is Claire Bennett Moretti.
For three years, I had been married to Vincent Moretti, one of the most feared Mafia Bosses in Chicago. He controlled casinos, shipping companies, hotels, and a criminal empire powerful enough to make important men lower their voices when he entered a room.
But I had always believed our marriage was the one thing he would protect.
I was wrong.
That Tuesday morning, I stood in our bedroom holding a positive pregnancy test.
Two pink lines.
After years of disappointment, I was finally pregnant.
I called Vincent immediately.
“Can you come home early tonight? I have something wonderful to tell you.”
“Not tonight.”
My smile faded. “Why?”
“Sophia’s craving strawberry cheesecake, so I booked the whole bakery for her tonight.”
Sophia Reynolds.
His childhood sweetheart.
And the woman I already knew he was sleeping with.
When I reminded Vincent that he had once refused to wake early to watch a sunrise with me, he sighed.
“Sophia’s going through a hard time. Don’t ruin this with jealousy.”
Then he hung up.
Minutes later, Sophia texted me a photo of herself wrapped around his arm.
Vincent is all mine tonight. I’ll enjoy the sunrise for you, too.
I stared at my pregnancy test and finally understood something.
My marriage was already over.
The next afternoon, Vincent came home with Sophia.
She was wearing one of his sweaters.
They sat close together, laughing over sunrise photos like I wasn’t even there.
Then Vincent opened the refrigerator.
“We brought you something.”
Inside the bakery box was a slice of strawberry cheesecake.
My stomach tightened.
“I can’t eat that.”
He frowned. “Why not?”
“I’m allergic to strawberries.”
Sophia laughed softly. “Some people exaggerate allergies.”
“My allergy is medically diagnosed.”
Vincent exhaled impatiently.
“Claire, it’s one piece of cheesecake.”
“I said no.”
Sophia lowered her eyes. “I was only trying to be nice.”
Vincent’s expression hardened.
“Now you’ve upset her.”
I stared at him.
“I’m not eating it.”
He picked up a fork.
“Eat the cheesecake, Claire.”
“No.”
Then he stepped closer.
The fork brushed my lips, and almost instantly, my skin began burning.
“Stop! I’m reacting already.”
He looked at the redness around my mouth.
“You’re doing this on purpose.”
Before I could move, he caught my face and forced the bite into my mouth.
I struggled.
“Vincent, please!”
But he didn’t stop.
By the time he finally released me, the plate was empty.
Within minutes, my lips were burning and red patches spread across my skin.
At 2:45 p.m., my throat began tightening.
I called for an ambulance.
Vincent never came outside.
In the ambulance, sharp pain suddenly twisted through my abdomen.
“I’m pregnant,” I gasped. “Please… my baby.”
Then I felt the bleeding.
Hours later, after the doctors stabilized the allergic reaction, one physician sat beside my bed.
Her expression told me everything.
“I’m very sorry, Claire.”
Our baby was gone.
I cried until I had nothing left.
Then I became quiet.
Vincent had betrayed me.
Ignored my allergy.
Forced me to eat something dangerous.
And I had lost the child he never even knew existed.
When I returned home, I packed only what belonged to me.
I left the jewelry.
The handbags.
The expensive gifts.
Then I called my attorney.
“I want a divorce.”
Before leaving, I placed the petition on Vincent’s desk.
My wedding ring went on top.
Beside it, I left one letter.
That night, Vincent came home and found the ring.
He picked up the divorce petition, then unfolded the letter.
Vincent,
I've known about your affair with Sophia for months. I stayed because I still loved you.
The day I called and asked you to come home, I wanted to tell you I was pregnant.
But you chose her.
And the day you forced me to eat that cheesecake, despite knowing I was allergic, you destroyed the last bond between us.
Our baby is gone, Vincent.
You didn't just lose your wife. You lost the child you never even knew existed.
I want a divorce. You're free to be with Sophia now.
Don't look for me.
Claire.
Vincent froze.
He read the letter again, his hands beginning to tremble.
Only then did he realize that the wonderful news I'd wanted to share was our baby.
And that the day he'd forced me to eat that cheesecake, I had lost our child.
He called me immediately.
No answer.
He called again.
Still nothing.
The most feared Mafia Boss in Chicago stood motionless in his office, clutching my wedding ring.
Then he sank into his chair and covered his face.
For the first time, Vincent Moretti broke down in tears.
He had spent years believing his money and power could give him anything.
But neither could bring back our child.
And neither could bring me home.
