Chapter 1

The day I buried my father, I called my husband and asked for a divorce. Ethan Blackwood laughed and said, “Go ahead, Claire. Let’s see how you pay your father’s hospital bills without my money.” I didn’t tell him my father was already dead—or that while Ethan was vacationing in Miami Beach with another woman, I had signed my father’s death certificate alone.
My name is Claire Bennett Blackwood, and for two years, I had been married to one of Chicago’s most feared Mafia bosses.
Ethan controlled casinos, shipping companies, luxury hotels, and a criminal empire powerful enough to make businessmen lower their voices when he entered a room.
But I had spent those two years begging him for scraps of attention.
My father had been sick for months. His hospital bills were crushing, and Ethan paid most of them.
He never let me forget it.
Whenever we argued, he reminded me how much I needed him.
So I stayed quiet.
Then one night, my father’s condition suddenly collapsed.
Doctors rushed him into emergency surgery while I stood beneath the fluorescent lights outside the operating room, calling Ethan over and over.
Ten calls.
Twelve.
Fifteen.
Nothing.
A nurse finally touched my shoulder.
“Is your husband coming?”
I shook my head.
“He’s out of town.”
What I didn’t say was that Ethan was in Miami Beach with Vanessa Monroe, his beautiful childhood sweetheart.
At 2:47 a.m., my father died.
I signed the paperwork with hands that somehow stayed steady.
When I was little, Dad used to guide my fingers across notebook paper and say, “Whatever happens, Claire, never let the world see your hand shaking.”
I remembered those words while I signed his death certificate.
Later, sitting alone in the hospital corridor, I opened my phone.
Vanessa had posted a photograph.
She was smiling beside Ethan on a private beach, his arm wrapped around her waist.
The timestamp said 2:47 a.m.
The exact minute my father had taken his final breath.
Something inside me went completely silent.
Over the next two days, I arranged the funeral, gathered my father’s belongings, and stood beside his grave while relatives whispered condolences.
Ethan never called.
Not once.
After the funeral, I contacted my attorney.
Then I called my husband.
“What now, Claire?” he answered impatiently.
“I want a divorce.”
He laughed.
“Another tantrum because of Vanessa?”
“The papers are with your attorney.”
“Fine,” he said coldly. “Let’s see how you manage your father’s medical bills next month.”
I closed my eyes.
He still didn’t know.
And suddenly, I didn’t care enough to explain.
“Goodbye, Ethan.”
That evening, I packed two suitcases.
I left behind the designer dresses, diamonds, and expensive gifts he had always used instead of apologies.
I kept my father’s old wristwatch.
And one photograph of us together.
Then I booked a flight to Seattle, where an old friend had offered me a place to stay while I rebuilt my life.
Three days later, Ethan returned to Chicago.
He expected me to be waiting.
Instead, the mansion was silent.
My clothes were gone. My shoes were missing. Even Dad’s framed photograph had disappeared.
Ethan called his assistant.
“Find Claire. Tell her to come home.”
The assistant hesitated.
“Sir… Mrs. Blackwood’s father passed away.”
Ethan went still.
“What?”
“She handled the funeral herself.”
Then came the second blow.
“She also boarded a flight to Seattle this morning.”
For several seconds, Ethan said nothing.
Then, according to his assistant, his voice cracked.
“Did she say when she’s coming back?”
“No, sir. She only asked me to remind your attorney that the divorce papers are waiting.”
By then, I was already thousands of miles away, holding my father’s watch and watching clouds drift beneath the airplane window.
For the first time in two years, I wasn’t waiting for Ethan Blackwood to come home.
I was finally going somewhere he couldn’t reach just by ordering me to return.
