Chapter 7 - The Woman They Underestimated

Norah woke because the room smelled wrong.

Not medicine.

Not disinfectant.

Cologne.

She opened her eyes.

A man in medical scrubs stood beside the IV pole.

She had never seen him before.

He smiled.

“Evening.”

Norah’s pulse accelerated.

“Who are you?”

“Night staff.”

“You're wearing outdoor shoes.”

His smile disappeared.

Norah hit the nurse-call button.

Nothing happened.

The man moved.

Norah grabbed the water pitcher and smashed it against his face.

He cursed.

She rolled from the bed.

Pain tore through her abdomen.

She ran.

The man grabbed her sweater.

Fabric ripped.

Norah screamed.

Then Lily appeared in the hallway.

“Nora?”

“No! Run!”

The attacker turned.

That mistake saved them.

Norah slammed the door into him.

Lily ran.

Security alarms suddenly erupted.

Marco appeared at the far end of the corridor.

The attacker fled through a stairwell.

Marco reached Norah.

“Are you hurt?”

“I’m fine. Lily?”

“Safe.”

Norah grabbed his jacket.

“Dominic.”

Marco looked away.

“What happened?”

“Victor has him.”

Norah’s fear became something colder.

“Show me.”

Minutes later, she watched the live communication Victor had established.

Dominic and Rafael knelt inside the hotel vault.

Victor stood behind them.

“Bring me the financial files,” Victor told Marco through the call, “or both brothers die.”

Norah stared at the screen.

Then she noticed something.

Victor’s arrogance.

He wanted them frightened.

He wanted Dominic watching Norah helplessly.

Norah stepped into camera view.

Dominic’s face changed instantly.

“Norah?”

“I’m okay.”

“Get away from the screen.”

She ignored him.

Victor smiled.

“The famous nanny.”

Norah looked directly at him.

“You're smaller than I expected.”

Victor’s smile faded.

Dominic nearly laughed despite the gun against his head.

Norah continued.

“You spent nineteen years turning two brothers against each other because you couldn’t beat either one honestly.”

Victor stepped closer to the camera.

“You should be careful.”

“Why?”

“You're carrying something valuable.”

Norah’s expression hardened.

“No. I’m carrying someone valuable.”

The distinction mattered.

“You see a surname,” she said. “An heir. Leverage. Dominic sees his child.”

Victor’s eyes narrowed.

“And what do you see?”

“My baby.”

Norah leaned toward the camera.

“And that’s why you’re going to lose.”

She stepped away.

“Marco, cut the feed.”

Dominic shouted her name.

The screen went dark.

Marco stared.

“What now?”

“Victor expects you to deliver those records?”

“Yes.”

“Give him what he wants.”

Marco frowned.

Norah pointed toward the files.

“Copies.”

Understanding dawned.

They created an encrypted drive containing the records.

But Marco also contacted federal agents Dominic had quietly approached weeks earlier through his attorney.

The drive would function as bait.

Victor wanted evidence destroyed.

Instead, he would lead investigators directly to himself.

At the hotel, Dominic heard movement upstairs.

Sirens.

Victor’s face changed.

“You.”

He struck Rafael.

Then pointed his weapon at Dominic.

“What did you do?”

Dominic smiled.

“Nothing.”

That was the truth.

For once, Dominic had not controlled the board.

Norah had.

Victor grabbed the financial drive and fled through a service passage.

Federal agents entered from the lobby.

Dominic and Rafael broke free during the chaos.

Victor escaped.

But his empire did not.

Accounts were frozen before sunrise.

Warehouses were raided.

Three lieutenants surrendered.

Two more disappeared.

Dominic returned to the medical facility at dawn.

Norah stood beside the window.

He walked toward her.

Neither spoke.

Then Dominic pulled her into his arms.

His face buried against her hair.

“You could have been killed.”

“So could you.”

“You deliberately antagonized Victor.”

“It worked.”

“That is not the point.”

Norah pulled back.

“Are you giving me an order?”

Dominic stared at her.

Then sighed.

“No.”

“Good.”

“I am expressing profound emotional disagreement.”

She laughed.

Dominic touched her face.

“I thought I lost you.”

“You didn't.”

“I've lost enough people.”

His voice broke slightly.

Norah’s anger vanished.

Dominic knelt.

Not dramatically.

Not romantically.

Simply because he wanted to be closer to her stomach.

He placed his palm against it.

“Hey.”

Norah blinked.

“Are you talking to the baby?”

“No.”

“You just said hey.”

“I was checking something.”

“With conversation?”

He ignored her.

The baby kicked.

Dominic smiled.

Norah ran her fingers through his hair.

Then his expression became serious.

“I’m leaving the organization.”

She froze.

“What?”

“Not immediately. It has to be dismantled carefully.”

He looked up.

“Legitimate businesses remain. Everything else ends.”

“For me?”

“For Lily.”

He touched Norah’s stomach.

“For this one.”

Then he stood.

“And for myself.”

Norah looked at him for a long time.

“You know leaving doesn't erase what you've done.”

“I know.”

“You may have consequences.”

“I know.”

“And I’m not promising you some perfect family because you suddenly discovered personal growth.”

Dominic almost smiled.

“I know.”

Norah touched his face.

“But it’s a start.”

He kissed her.

Outside the room, Rafael watched quietly.

Then his phone buzzed.

A message from an unknown number appeared.

Victor is heading to the lake house.

Rafael stared at it.

The lake house.

Where their father died.

Where everything began.

May you like

Below it came another message.

And he has Lily.
