Chapter 1 - THE PHOTO THAT DESTROYED TWELVE YEARS

At 11:47 p.m. on Christmas Eve, my husband accidentally sent me a photo of himself in a hotel bed with his mistress while I cared for our feverish twins alone. Seconds later, he texted, “Sorry, wrong person.” I didn't reply. Instead, I saved the photo, opened the mysterious blue box hidden in his coat, and dialed a number he thought I'd deleted. When someone answered, I whispered, “It's time to destroy everything he owns.”\
At 11:47 p.m. on Christmas Eve, my husband accidentally sent me a photograph that destroyed twelve years of marriage. He was lying shirtless in a luxury hotel bed, kissing another woman, while I sat alone beside our feverish twins, praying their temperatures would finally drop.\
\
Three seconds later, another message appeared.\
\
“Sorry, wrong person.”\
\
I stared at those four words.\
\
Not I'm sorry. Not Please forgive me.\
\
Just wrong person.\
\
My name is Emily Carter. I was thirty-six, married to a successful real estate developer named Richard, and apparently the only person in our marriage who believed our vows meant anything.\
\
Our six-year-old twins, Noah and Lily, had been sick since morning. Richard had promised to return home early, but at six o'clock, he called claiming an emergency meeting with investors.\
\
“Business doesn't stop because it's Christmas,” he snapped when I asked him to come home.\
\
Now I knew exactly what kind of business had kept him away.\
\
The woman in the photograph was Vanessa Blake, his executive assistant.\
\
The same woman who had smiled at our family Christmas dinner three nights earlier.\
\
The same woman who had kissed my children on their foreheads.\
\
I felt something inside me break.\
\
But I didn't cry.\
\
Instead, I opened Richard's closet and retrieved the small blue velvet box I'd discovered inside his overcoat that afternoon.\
\
Inside was a diamond engagement ring.\
\
Beneath it lay a folded document bearing the letterhead of Carter Development Group.\
\
My hands trembled as I read.\
\
Richard was preparing to transfer controlling interests in several company properties to a newly established holding company.\
\
Vanessa was listed as its managing partner.\
\
And my signature appeared on a preliminary authorization form.\
\
Except I had never signed it.\
\
I examined the signature carefully.\
\
It was an imitation, but a convincing one.\
\
Richard had forgotten something important about his supposedly ordinary wife.\
\
Before I became a stay-at-home mother, I had spent nine years working as a forensic accountant investigating corporate fraud.\
\
And the firm that had provided Richard's company with its original financing?\
\
It belonged to my father.\
\
I picked up my phone and called a number Richard believed I'd deleted years ago.\
\
A familiar voice answered.\
\
“Emily?”\
\
“David,” I whispered. “I need your help.”\
\
My father's longtime attorney became instantly alert.\
\
“What happened?”\
\
I looked toward my sleeping children.\
\
“My husband has been stealing from the company. And I think he's trying to frame me.”\
\
Silence.\
\
Then David asked, “Do you still have access to the original shareholder agreement?”\
\
I closed the blue box.\
\
“Yes.”\
\
“Then Richard has made the worst mistake of his life.”\
\
I looked at the photograph again.\
May you like
\
“David,” I said quietly, “it's time to destroy everything he owns.”....
