Chapter 1 - THE DOCTOR'S MISTAKE

One careless sentence from a doctor destroyed everything I believed about the fourteen months since my wife disappeared. “Your twins are doing beautifully, Mr. Moretti,” he said, and when the woman beside me laughed and called it a mistake, I learned that somewhere in Chicago, two eight-month-old babies carried the blood of a mafia boss who never knew they existed.
My name is Vincent Moretti.
At forty-two, I had spent years making sure nobody could read my face. In Chicago, uncertainty could be more useful than fear.
But inside that private emergency room at St. Catherine Medical Center, something in me cracked.
“Twins?” Vanessa Cole laughed beside me. “Doctor, you’ve confused him with someone else.”
Dr. Daniel Mercer looked at her, then at me.
His face went pale.
“I’m sorry. I assumed you knew.”
“What twins?”
Vanessa suddenly stopped complaining about her twisted ankle and ruined designer shoe.
Dr. Mercer checked his tablet.
“Emma and Noah.”
My fingers tightened around the chair.
“Whose children?”
He hesitated.
“Claire’s.”
That name hit harder than a bullet.
Claire Morgan was my wife.
Fourteen months earlier, she vanished from my penthouse after everyone around me described her as jealous, unstable, and impossible. Eventually, I convinced myself she had simply abandoned me.
“How old?”
“Eight months.”
My chest tightened.
“When were they born?”
He gave me the date.
I calculated instantly.
Claire had left fourteen months earlier. Six weeks later, she would have discovered she was carrying my children.
Twins.
Eight months old.
Old enough to crawl, laugh, recognize faces, and cry for a father who had never held them.
“How many times did she contact me?”
Vanessa’s injured foot stopped moving.
The doctor frowned at his records.
“I can see six family notifications.”
“Six?”
“Yes.”
“And I acknowledged none?”
“That appears correct.”
The room became silent.
I pulled out my phone.
“Ethan.”
My security chief answered immediately. “I’m here.”
“Pull every communication connected to Claire Morgan from the last fourteen months.”
“All of it?”
My eyes settled on Vanessa.
“All of it.”
After I hung up, she folded her arms.
“You’re being dramatic.”
I stared at her until her confidence flickered.
“Claire walked out,” she continued. “Remember? She left her ring on the counter.”
I remembered.
Claire’s wedding ring beside the fruit bowl.
Her empty closet.
And Vanessa standing in my bedroom doorway wearing cream heels and one of my dress shirts.
What Claire saw looked unforgivable.
What she didn’t know was that Vanessa had spilled wine on herself and asked to change upstairs while I handled business with one of my captains downstairs.
I should never have allowed it.
After Claire vanished, loneliness became resentment. Vanessa stayed close, and eventually I let myself believe her version of my marriage.
Claire abandoned me.
Claire never loved me.
Claire wanted nothing from me.
But six notifications said otherwise.
Then my phone vibrated.
Ethan.
I answered.
His voice sounded different.
“Boss, I found the messages.”
My jaw tightened. “And?”
“They reached your private system.”
I slowly looked at Vanessa.
“Then why didn’t I see them?”
Silence.
Finally, Ethan spoke.
“Because somebody inside your penthouse deleted every one.”
Vanessa went completely still.
I turned back toward Dr. Mercer.
