Chapter 9 - The Daughter No One Knew About

Emma couldn't sleep.

The photograph remained on the kitchen table.

Her mother.

Ethan.

A newborn baby.

And a hospital blanket Emma remembered seeing in family photographs.

Grant sat opposite her.

“Your mother never mentioned Ethan to you?”

“Not once.”

“Could the baby be someone else?”

Emma studied the photograph.

The baby had a tiny crescent-shaped birthmark near the left shoulder.

Emma touched her own shoulder.

She had the same mark.

“I think it's me.”

Grant looked devastated.

“Emma, there may be an explanation.”

“Then find it.”

He called Daniel.

Within an hour, Daniel arrived with a retired attorney named Robert Hayes.

Robert had handled the original trust documents before his retirement.

He studied the photograph and the letter.

Then he looked at Emma.

“Your mother was very careful.”

“About what?”

“About keeping your identity separate from the financial records.”

Emma frowned.

“My identity?”

Robert nodded.

“Your mother and Ethan established a trust using a private family arrangement. The original beneficiary was recorded under a protected designation.”

“Why?”

“Because Victor was trying to acquire the controlling shares of Northstar before the company even existed.”

Emma looked at Grant.

Robert continued.

“Your mother believed Victor would eventually attempt to take control of the business through the Caldwell family.”

“But why involve me?”

“Because your mother trusted Ethan.”

“Were they married?”

Robert shook his head.

“No.”

Emma stared.

“Then what were they?”

Robert hesitated.

“That's a question you should ask Ethan.”

A car door slammed outside.

Everyone turned.

A man entered the house.

He was older than in the photograph, with silver at his temples and a scar running along his jaw.

Grant stood.

“Ethan.”

The man nodded.

“Grant.”

Emma stared.

“You're alive.”

Ethan looked at her.

“I've been trying to get back to you for years.”

Grant stepped forward.

“Why didn't you contact me?”

“Because your father made sure I couldn't.”

“You could have called.”

“I did. Every time, he intercepted it.”

Grant looked furious.

“You expect me to believe that?”

Ethan placed a small recorder on the table.

“Listen.”

He pressed play.

Victor's voice filled the room.

If you ever contact Grant again, I'll make sure Emma pays for it.

Another voice answered.

She's my daughter too.

Emma felt the blood drain from her face.

The recording continued.

You lost that right when you left.

Then Victor again.

No. I lost nothing. You were the one who chose to walk away.

The recording stopped.

Emma looked at Ethan.

“What did he mean?”

Ethan sat down.

“Your mother and I were together before she met your father.”

Emma's mind raced.

“My father?”

Ethan nodded.

“Your biological father was Victor Caldwell.”

The room went completely silent.

Grant stepped backward.

Emma couldn't move.

“No.”

Ethan lowered his eyes.

“Your mother loved Victor once. But he was already involved in business arrangements that frightened her. When she became pregnant, she left.”

Emma shook her head.

“My father died when I was twenty.”

“Your legal father raised you. He loved you. He was a good man.”

“But Victor—”

“Victor knew about you.”

Emma felt sick.

“He knew?”

“Yes.”

“Then why did he hate me?”

Ethan looked toward Grant.

“Because Victor believed your mother had used you to secure a financial claim against him.”

“That isn't true.”

“No. It isn't.”

Ethan explained that Emma's mother had created the trust to protect her daughter from Victor's influence.

The trust held a controlling interest in Northstar through an early investment structure.

The Caldwell family had spent years trying to regain control.

Victor had never known the complete arrangement.

Until recently.

“Why now?” Emma asked.

“Because Victor discovered that the trust's beneficiary could activate the controlling interest once she reached a certain age and completed the required verification.”

Emma stared.

“And that person is me.”

Ethan nodded.

Robert placed a document on the table.

“All that's required is your signature and independent verification.”

Grant looked at Emma.

“If you activate it, you could take control of Northstar.”

She stared at the papers.

“Would that hurt you?”

“No.”

“Would it hurt the employees?”

“Not if you protect them.”

Emma looked at Ethan.

“Why did Victor steal Lily's necklace?”

“The key inside the pendant opens the original trust archive. Victor believes the archive contains the final document proving his claim.”

“Does it?”

Ethan nodded.

“But there's something else.”

He opened his briefcase.

Inside was a second envelope.

“Your mother left instructions that this should only be opened after the trust was activated.”

Emma took it.

Her name was written across the front.

Before she could open it, the front door burst open.

Victor walked in.

Two security men followed him.

He looked at Emma.

Then at the documents.

“You should have left the past alone.”

Grant stepped forward.

“Get out.”

Victor ignored him.

His eyes remained fixed on Emma.

“You have no idea what you're holding.”

Emma stood.

“Then explain it.”

Victor smiled sadly.

“Because the truth about your mother isn't the only secret she left behind.”

He looked at the envelope.

May you like

“And if you open that, you'll learn why Ethan was never supposed to raise you.”
