Chapter 1 - THE HUSBAND THEY NEVER EXPECTED TO RETURN

"I stepped off a classified military transport and made my way straight to the ICU, where my wife lay with twenty-seven broken b0nes and a fractured skull. Outside her hospital room, her mother and six sisters stood smiling as if they were waiting for lunch to be served. The detective assigned to her case leaned closer and whispered, ""Captain, this family practically owns the entire county."" I looked through the glass at my wife's bruised, swollen face and replied, ""Good. My authority reaches far beyond this county.""

My name is Alexander Sinclair.

For seven months, I'd been away on a classified Army mission, counting down every day until I could return home to Rosalie. I'd imagined her waiting on our front porch, pretending she hadn't spent hours looking down the driveway to see if I was coming back.

Instead, my phone rang eleven hours before my plane was scheduled to land at Fort Benning.

The nurse on the other end told me only one thing.

""Your wife is in intensive care. You need to get here immediately.""

When I arrived at Fairview Regional Hospital, desert dust still covered my boots.

Dr. Samuel Higgins was waiting outside the secured ward.

""Your wife is alive,"" he told me carefully.

""What happened to her?""

""She has twenty-seven fractures. Five broken ribs, fractures in both wrists, a broken left femur, and multiple fractures to the b0nes in her face and skull. She's also experiencing internal bleeding and severe head trau:ma.""

The world around me seemed to shrink until nothing else mattered.

""How many people attacked her?""

""The pattern of her in:juri:es suggests more than one attacker. It appears someone restrained her while another person inflicted most of the damage.""

""What kind of weap0n did they use?""

""Something heavy, probably metal. It could have been a fireplace tool or a framing hammer.""

Then I saw Rosalie.

Her face was so swollen that I could barely recognize her. Part of her dark hair had been shaved away, both wrists were secured in splints, and her injured leg was suspended in traction.

I'd seen soldiers dragged from wrecked vehicles after devastating a:ttac:ks.

Nothing had prepared me to see my own wife in that condition.

I gently placed my hand on her uninjured shoulder.

""Rosalie,"" I whispered. ""It's Alexander. I'm home.""

The ventilator was the only thing that answered me.

I turned and looked down the corridor.

Catherine Miller, Rosalie's mother, sat beneath the harsh fluorescent lights in a navy suit, a string of pearls resting around her neck. Nearby stood all six of Rosalie's sisters: Amanda, Charlotte, Jessica, Natalie, Melissa, and Hannah.

The Miller family owned Miller Aerospace, a major defense contractor with political connections stretching across Georgia.

Yet none of those women looked remotely devastated.

Amanda was scrolling through her phone. Jessica was quietly laughing at something Melissa had said. Catherine glanced at her watch as though she had somewhere else to be.

Detective Thomas Ward stood beside them.

I walked directly toward him.

""What happened at my house?""

""We believe it was a burglary,"" he replied. ""Your wife apparently surprised the intruders.""

""What did they steal?""

""Electronics and other valuables. Possibly some cash.""

""How did they get inside?""

""Through the rear kitchen door.""

""Was the door forced open?""

He hesitated, then briefly glanced in Catherine's direction.

""We're still investigating that.""

A knot tightened in my stomach.

""How long has her family been here?""

Ward lowered his voice. ""They arrived before the ambulance.""

I stared at him.

""How could they possibly have known?""

""I honestly don't know.""

He stepped a little closer to me.

""Captain, there's something you need to understand. The Miller family has enormous influence around here. They have connections within the police department's leadership, the district attorney's office, and the hospital administration. Catherine practically pays for half the county.""

""And?""

He glanced toward Rosalie's room.

""There's not much we can do.""

I looked through the window again, focusing on the narrow wound near Rosalie's temple.

This hadn't been a random attack.

Someone had carried it out with precision.

Someone had meant to do this.

Catherine approached me.

""Alexander,"" she said in a composed voice, ""the family will be handling Rosalie's care from now on.""

""She's my wife.""

""And you're rarely around.""

Amanda stepped forward. ""You've been gone for seven months.""

""I was deployed.""

Catherine's expression hardened. ""Rosalie needed her family with her.""

""She spent years trying to get away from this family.""

Silence fell over the corridor.

I turned my attention to Hannah.

She was the only one of the sisters who refused to meet my eyes.

She kept staring at the floor.

Her hands were shaking.

I walked toward her.

""Hannah, tell me what happened inside my house.""

Catherine immediately moved between us.

""You will not interrogate my daughter.""

I met her stare without flinching.

""Rosalie is your daughter, too.""

Catherine's face became cold.

""She stopped being my daughter a very long time ago.""

There it was.

It wasn't a direct admission of guilt.

But it came dangerously close.

I leaned toward her.

""If Rosalie doesn't survive this, there won't be a corporation, political donor, courthouse, or security checkpoint anywhere in this country capable of protecting the people responsible.""

Catherine gave a short laugh, devoid of any genuine amusement.

""Alexander, you're just one soldier.""

I looked through the glass at my wife.

""No.""

Then I turned back and met Catherine's eyes.

""I'm the husband none of you thought would ever come home.""

They believed their money and influence had already bu:rie:d the truth.

But they'd made two terrible mistakes.

Rosalie was still alive.

May you like

And they had given me the chance to come home.
