THE CALL HE FORGOT TO END / Chapter 5 / 10

Chapter 5 - My Father's SecretMy father read Liam's message twice.

Then he sat down.

That scared me more than denial would have.

"Dad?"

My mother stood in the kitchen doorway holding Hailey.

"What does he mean?"

Dad removed his glasses.

"There's something I should have told you."

I felt tired suddenly.

Everybody seemed to have something they should have told me.

He explained that four years earlier, before I met Liam, his construction company had been close to collapse.

One project had gone disastrously wrong.

A partner stole money.

Banks threatened foreclosure.

Then Robert Bennett—Liam's father—stepped in.

Robert invested enough to save the company.

"I paid him back," Dad said. "Every cent."

"What does this have to do with Liam?"

"Robert introduced you."

I remembered.

A charity fundraiser.

Dad had casually suggested I meet the "nice young finance guy" standing near the bar.

Liam.

"You arranged us?"

"No. I introduced you. That's all."

"Did Robert expect something?"

Dad hesitated.

That was answer enough.

"He thought joining the families would be good."

My stomach turned.

"Business?"

"At first."

"And you didn't tell me?"

"Because you fell in love with Liam. Once that happened, the business connection seemed irrelevant."

"It wasn't irrelevant to me."

"I know."

"Did Liam know?"

Dad nodded.

I stood.

So Liam had entered our first conversation already knowing who I was.

Knowing my father.

Knowing our families wanted the match.

Had anything been spontaneous?

My mother put Hailey into her bassinet and faced Dad.

"You told me Robert simply invited us to the fundraiser."

"I know."

"You lied to me too."

Dad looked ashamed.

And suddenly I understood something larger than my marriage.

Secrets survived because people convinced themselves silence was kindness.

Margaret hadn't warned me about Vanessa because she wanted to believe Liam had changed.

Dad hadn't told me about Robert's matchmaking because I seemed happy.

I had ignored Liam's absence because I wanted Hailey to have an intact family.

Every one of us had protected an illusion.

And Liam had learned to live inside those illusions.

My attorney called that afternoon.

Archer Medical had suspended Liam pending investigation.

Evan Brooks was missing.

Nobody had seen him since the morning before.

More importantly, investigators discovered that the missing forty-seven thousand dollars from my marriage had not gone to Vanessa.

It had gone into a cryptocurrency account.

Controlled by Liam.

"He was preparing liquid assets," my attorney explained.

"For what?"

"Possibly to hide money during divorce."

The plan became painfully clear.

Liam would wait for the acquisition bonus.

Move what he could.

Divorce me.

Leave with Vanessa.

And if necessary, attack Hailey's paternity to reduce his obligations.

Except Vanessa hadn't understood the entire scheme either.

He wasn't building a new life with her.

He was building an escape for himself.

That night, Robert came to my parents' house.

Alone.

He looked ten years older.

"I owe you an apology."

I didn't invite him to sit.

"For which part?"

"Raising a son who believes people exist to be useful to him."

"That's between you and Liam."

"No. Some of it belongs to me."

He explained that Liam had always been ambitious.

Robert rewarded results.

Grades.

Jobs.

Promotions.

Money.

When Liam failed, Robert solved problems quietly.

A college debt.

A reckless investment.

The fallout after Vanessa left him.

"I thought protecting him would teach him responsibility eventually."

"It taught him consequences disappear."

Robert nodded.

"Yes."

He handed me an envelope.

I didn't take it.

"What is it?"

"Documents."

"What documents?"

"Proof that Liam knew your father's company had repaid me before your wedding. Proof there was no financial obligation tying you to him."

"Why do I need that?"

"Because Liam has begun telling people your father pressured him into marrying you to settle a debt."

I laughed in disbelief.

"He cheated on me and now he's claiming he was forced into the marriage?"

"He's trying to protect himself."

"From what?"

Robert looked directly at me.

"Everything."

Archer's investigation was expanding.

Federal investigators might become involved because payments had crossed state lines.

Liam had retained a criminal attorney.

And apparently he was blaming everyone.

Vanessa.

Evan.

His father.

My father.

Me.

Anyone except himself.

Before Robert left, he stopped beside Hailey's bassinet.

"May I?"

I hesitated, then nodded.

He looked down at his granddaughter.

His eyes filled.

"I'm sorry, little one."

Something inside me softened, though not enough to erase anything.

After he left, I found another envelope tucked between the documents.

It contained a letter written by Liam.

Not recently.

Three years earlier.

Addressed to Robert.

Dad and I read it together.

Liam described meeting me at the fundraiser.

At first, the letter sounded calculating.

He mentioned my father's business.

Our families.

The advantages.

Then halfway down the page, the tone changed.

The strange part is, I actually like her. She laughs at me when I'm trying too hard to impress her. Nobody does that.

Further down:

If I screw this up the way I screwed up Vanessa, don't rescue me.

I read that sentence repeatedly.

Once, apparently, Liam had understood himself.

Maybe he had even loved me.

That somehow hurt more.

The next morning, my attorney called.

"Liam filed an emergency custody motion."

My hand tightened around the phone.

"On what grounds?"

"He claims you're experiencing postpartum instability and removed Hailey from the marital home impulsively."

I couldn't speak.

"He also claims the recording was illegally obtained and manipulated."

Of course.

"And there's something else."

"What?"

"He has photographs."

"What photographs?"

"You meeting Vanessa."

I remembered Evan's black sedan.

Liam had been preparing his defense while I was discovering the truth.

But my attorney wasn't finished.

"Claire, one of the exhibits is a statement from a witness claiming you've been neglecting Hailey."

"Who?"

A pause.

Then she said the name.

My stomach dropped.

The statement had been signed by the one person who had been inside my home almost every day since Hailey was born.

May you like

Our nanny.

Rachel.
