Chapter 8 - The Price of a Family

Adrian moved before anyone could stop him.

He ran upstairs.

Lucas's bedroom door stood open.

The window was locked.

The curtains moved slightly.

Claire reached the doorway.

“Lucas!”

There was no answer.

Ethan began crying.

Emma stood frozen, holding her sketchbook.

Adrian called his security team.

Within minutes, the mansion was surrounded.

But Lucas was nowhere.

Then Adrian's phone rang.

Daniel.

“Hello, Adrian.”

Adrian's expression turned murderous.

“Where is my son?”

“Your son?”

A quiet laugh.

“You have three children now. Congratulations.”

“Tell me where he is.”

“Meet me at the old Park warehouse. Come alone.”

“I'm not making that deal.”

“Then you'll never see Lucas again.”

The call ended.

Claire grabbed Adrian's arm.

“You're not going alone.”

“I have to.”

“No. You have to bring our son home. Those are different things.”

His father stepped forward.

“Daniel wants the company records.”

Adrian turned.

“What records?”

“The original trust documents. They prove I transferred control of the family foundation to an independent trustee before my disappearance.”

“Where are they?”

His father looked away.

“Hidden.”

Adrian's voice became sharp.

“Where?”

“Inside the old warehouse.”

Claire understood.

“Daniel wants you there because he knows the documents are there.”

Adrian nodded.

“He wants both.”

They made a plan.

Marcus would contact the police and provide Daniel's location.

Victoria would secure the children.

Adrian would enter the warehouse with a concealed recording device.

Claire insisted on going.

He refused.

Then she said something that stopped him.

“Five years ago, I walked away because I believed I was protecting our children. I won't spend another day watching powerful men make decisions about our family while I stand outside.”

Adrian looked at her.

Finally, he nodded.

They arrived at the warehouse shortly before midnight.

The building was empty except for a single illuminated office.

Daniel stood inside.

Lucas sat in a chair beside him.

The boy's hands were free, but he looked frightened.

“Mom!”

Claire started forward.

Daniel raised a hand.

“Slowly.”

Adrian stepped between them.

“Let him go.”

Daniel smiled.

“You have your father's stubbornness.”

“And you have his cowardice.”

Daniel's expression tightened.

He explained that the Park family had been built on hidden accounts, false identities, and carefully managed scandals.

He had protected the company for decades.

He had protected Adrian's father.

He had even arranged for Lucas to be raised away from the family because the child threatened the inheritance structure.

“You took a newborn from his mother,” Claire said.

“I kept him alive.”

“You stole five years.”

Daniel looked at Adrian.

“Your father was willing to sacrifice everything to preserve the company. I simply did what he couldn't.”

Adrian stepped forward.

“You're finished.”

Daniel laughed.

“Not yet.”

He placed a document on the desk.

It was a transfer agreement.

Adrian's signature appeared at the bottom.

“Sign the remaining pages, and the children go home.”

Adrian looked at the document.

Then at Daniel.

“You forged my signature.”

Daniel's smile vanished.

“Your father taught me how.”

A siren sounded in the distance.

Daniel glanced toward the window.

“You called the police.”

“No,” Adrian said. “I called someone you forgot about.”

The warehouse doors opened.

Victoria entered with two detectives.

But Daniel didn't panic.

He reached inside his jacket and pulled out a small photograph.

Claire recognized the woman immediately.

The unknown woman from the envelope.

Daniel placed the photograph on the desk.

“Before you arrest me,” he said, “you should know that Adrian's father wasn't the only one who falsified a birth record.”

He looked at Claire.

“Your daughter Emma was not the second child born that night.”

Claire's blood ran cold.

May you like

Daniel smiled.

“She was the fourth.”
