Chapter 7 - The Price of a Beautiful Lie

Claire spent the night staring at a photograph of her mother.

It sat beside her bed in the apartment she'd rented after leaving Ethan.

Margaret Morgan was smiling in the picture, standing in a field of wildflowers with her arms wrapped around Claire and Thomas.

They had been happy then.

Or at least Claire remembered happiness.

Now every memory seemed to conceal another question.

At six in the morning, her phone rang.

Evelyn Price.

“We found Harborlight.”

Claire sat upright.

“What is it?”

“On paper, a research foundation. In practice, it appears to have financed several private investigations and technology acquisitions.”

“Who controlled it?”

“Julian Cross was involved. But the original funding came through an investment account belonging to a man named Nathaniel Blake.”

Claire frowned.

“Blake?”

“Vanessa's father.”

Claire swung her feet to the floor.

“Tell me everything.”

Nathaniel Blake had once been a respected venture capitalist.

He specialized in acquiring distressed technology companies.

Twenty years earlier, he'd built a reputation for identifying promising innovations before their inventors understood their value.

But his career had ended abruptly after an investment scandal.

Several founders accused him of using deceptive contracts to obtain intellectual property.

The cases settled privately.

Then Nathaniel disappeared from public business circles.

Claire remembered hearing his name once.

At a dinner party.

Vanessa had mentioned that her father had retired abroad.

Ethan had changed the subject.

Now Evelyn had uncovered evidence that Nathaniel remained active through intermediaries.

“His investment network financed Julian Cross,” Evelyn explained.

“And Vanessa?”

“She received payments through consulting entities before she joined Cole Meridian.”

Claire stared at the records.

“So she didn't meet Ethan by accident.”

“It's looking increasingly unlikely.”

Daniel entered the conference room.

“There's more.”

He placed a document on the table.

“A copy of Vanessa's original employment recommendation.”

Claire read the signature.

Ethan Cole.

“Of course.”

Daniel shook his head.

“Look at the date.”

Claire examined it.

The recommendation was signed four months before Ethan claimed he'd first met Vanessa.

She looked up.

“He lied.”

Daniel nodded.

“About when they knew each other.”

Claire closed her eyes.

She had spent four months thinking her husband's affair was the betrayal.

Now it looked like the affair might have been part of a much larger plan.

At the Cole penthouse, Ethan was having his own confrontation.

Vanessa stood across from him, her arms folded.

“You've been ignoring me.”

“I'm busy.”

“With Claire?”

“With the destruction of my company.”

Vanessa rolled her eyes.

“Your company is fine.”

“I'm suspended. The lenders are demanding explanations. Someone forged my wife's signature.”

She looked toward the window.

Ethan stepped closer.

“Did your father know Julian Cross?”

Vanessa went still.

“Why?”

“Answer me.”

“Yes.”

“How well?”

“They did business.”

“What business?”

“Investments.”

Ethan studied her.

“Did your father send you to me?”

Vanessa laughed.

“Don't flatter yourself.”

He said nothing.

Her smile faded.

“Ethan.”

“Did he?”

Vanessa's eyes hardened.

“My father believed Claire's software was worth more than Cole Meridian itself.”

Ethan felt his pulse quicken.

“What?”

“He tried to buy it years ago. She refused.”

“So you decided to marry the man using it?”

Vanessa's expression flickered.

“I never said I wanted to marry you.”

The words landed harder than Ethan expected.

He stared at her.

She continued.

“You were supposed to convince Claire to transfer the technology. That's all.”

“Supposed to?”

Vanessa realized her mistake.

Ethan stepped closer.

“Who gave you that assignment?”

She grabbed her handbag.

“This conversation is over.”

He blocked the doorway without touching her.

“Vanessa.”

She looked at him with sudden anger.

“You really think you're the center of everything, don't you?”

Ethan said nothing.

“My father spent years trying to acquire Meridian Core. Then you came along, a man so desperate to feel admired that all I had to do was laugh at your jokes.”

Ethan flinched.

Vanessa continued.

“You gave me access to your office. Your calendar. Your attorneys. Your company's strategic plans.”

He stared at her.

“And Claire?”

Vanessa smiled bitterly.

“Claire was the only person who understood what we were trying to do.”

“Then why didn't she stop you?”

“Because she was still trying to save you.”

For the first time, Ethan couldn't look at her.

Vanessa pushed past him.

At the doorway, she stopped.

“You want to know the funniest part?”

He didn't answer.

“She could have destroyed you years ago.”

Then Vanessa left.

That afternoon, Claire received an unexpected invitation.

A private meeting.

A small café outside Milwaukee.

The message contained only three sentences.

Come alone.

Bring the photograph.

I owe you eleven years.

Claire knew it was dangerous.

She showed Daniel immediately.

He insisted on arranging discreet security and verifying the location.

Claire agreed.

She would not let desperation make her careless.

At 4:15 p.m., she entered the café.

The room smelled of fresh coffee and cinnamon.

Only three tables were occupied.

A man sat near the back window.

He wore a dark jacket and a baseball cap.

His hair was gray at the temples.

His hands rested around a cup of untouched coffee.

Claire stopped.

The man looked up.

And the world seemed to tilt.

“Hey, little sister.”

Claire's knees weakened.

Thomas stood.

For eleven years, she'd imagined this moment.

In dreams.

In impossible wishes.

In the cruel seconds between waking and remembering he was dead.

Now he was standing six feet away.

Alive.

She crossed the room.

Then she hit him.

Her fist struck his chest.

“Eleven years!”

Thomas didn't move.

She hit him again.

“Eleven years, Thomas!”

Tears streamed down her face.

“I buried you!”

“I know.”

“I needed you!”

His eyes filled.

“I know.”

She shoved him.

“You let me think you were dead!”

Thomas reached for her.

She tried to pull away.

Then she collapsed against him.

He held her while she cried.

Neither spoke for a long time.

Finally, Claire stepped back.

“Tell me why.”

Thomas wiped his face.

“Because I discovered that Nathaniel Blake was using a network of companies to steal technology. Julian Cross was helping him.”

“And Ethan?”

Thomas looked away.

“Ethan wasn't part of the original plan.”

Claire's chest tightened.

“Original?”

Thomas nodded.

“He was useful. Ambitious. Easily manipulated.”

Claire sat slowly.

“Why did you disappear?”

“Julian's people threatened you. They knew where you lived, where you worked, even when you visited Mom.”

“You could have gone to the police.”

“I tried.”

Thomas looked toward the window.

“The investigator I contacted disappeared from the case. Then my car was sabotaged.”

Claire stared at him.

“The accident?”

“Was staged after I escaped. I had help from someone who believed I was in danger.”

“Who?”

Thomas hesitated.

“An investigator named Samuel Price.”

Claire thought of the trust.

“He's one of Dad's trustees.”

Thomas nodded.

“We built a new identity. I kept gathering evidence.”

“For eleven years?”

“I know how that sounds.”

“It sounds like you abandoned me.”

Thomas lowered his head.

“I did. Whatever my reasons, I did.”

Claire's anger returned.

“And Mom knew?”

“She found me years later. I wanted to tell you. She begged me not to until I could prove who was behind everything.”

Claire wiped her cheeks.

“Who was it?”

Thomas looked at her.

“Nathaniel Blake organized the operation. Julian carried it out.”

“And Ethan?”

Thomas took a slow breath.

“Ethan knew Julian was threatening me. But I found no evidence he knew about the attempt on my life.”

Claire stared at him.

“Then why did Mom think the person responsible was someone I loved?”

Thomas reached into his jacket.

He removed a photograph.

It showed a younger Ethan standing outside a warehouse beside Nathaniel Blake.

The date was fifteen years earlier.

Before Claire had married Ethan.

Before Ethan supposedly knew Nathaniel.

Thomas placed another document beside it.

A consulting agreement.

Signed by Ethan.

Claire felt the room spin.

Thomas spoke quietly.

“Your husband didn't meet Nathaniel Blake through Vanessa.”

May you like

He looked directly into her eyes.

“He was working for him before he ever met you.”
