Chapter 5 - THE KISS THAT BROKE THE GALA

By the time Maya returned to the Whitmore estate, the engagement gala had reached its most carefully choreographed moment.

The ballroom glittered beneath crystal chandeliers. A string quartet played a slow arrangement while guests gathered around a temporary stage decorated with white roses. Cameras waited near the staircase, and a giant screen displayed the Whitmore and Sinclair family crests.

Maya entered through the service corridor, her mother's photograph tucked inside her jacket.

She had barely taken three steps when Elena caught her arm.

“Your mother?”

“She's alive. The doctors are working on her.”

Elena's expression softened. “I'm sorry, sweetheart.”

Maya nodded, unable to speak.

“There's something else,” Elena continued. “Mr. Whitmore has been looking for you. And Miss Sinclair has been asking where you've been.”

“Did you tell her?”

“I told her you had a family emergency.”

Elena lowered her voice.

“She didn't believe me.”

Maya looked toward the ballroom.

Adrien stood beside Vanessa at the center of the stage. He looked magnificent in his black tuxedo, but his expression was the same one Maya had seen in the private dining room: a man standing at the edge of a decision he could not take back.

Daniel stood a few feet away, holding a folder.

Maya's stomach tightened.

“What is that?”

“The engagement agreement, I believe.”

“Why is Daniel holding it?”

“Because he seems to think he's part of the family.”

The orchestra fell silent.

Adrien took the microphone.

“Thank you all for being here tonight. My father has always believed that a company is only as strong as the people who build it. He taught me that loyalty is measured not by what people promise when things are easy, but by what they do when the truth becomes inconvenient.”

Vanessa's smile tightened.

Maya watched Daniel's hand close around the folder.

Adrien continued.

“Tonight was supposed to mark the beginning of a partnership between our families. But before I make any announcement, I need to address a serious matter concerning the future of Whitmore Holdings.”

A murmur spread through the ballroom.

Vanessa turned toward him.

“Adrien,” she whispered, still smiling for the cameras. “What are you doing?”

“Something I should have done weeks ago.”

He reached for the folder.

Daniel stepped forward.

“Perhaps we should discuss this privately.”

“No,” Adrien said. “You've had plenty of private discussions.”

The guests fell silent.

Adrien opened the folder and held up the first page.

“This document authorizes a transfer of controlling shares in my company. It bears my father's signature, although he was unconscious when it was supposedly signed.”

A gasp rippled through the crowd.

Vanessa's face went pale.

Daniel moved closer.

“That's an unverified allegation.”

“Then you'll have no objection to an independent forensic examination.”

“Adrien, think about the damage you're causing.”

“I am.”

Adrien looked toward Maya.

Their eyes met across the ballroom.

For the first time that evening, he seemed certain of something.

Maya stepped out of the service corridor.

Vanessa saw her.

And the expression that crossed the fiancée's face was not jealousy.

It was terror.

“You,” Vanessa whispered.

Maya stopped.

“What?”

Vanessa seized the microphone from Adrien.

“This woman has been interfering with our engagement for weeks. She's been using her position in this house to get close to my fiancé, and now she's trying to sabotage a legitimate business transaction.”

The ballroom erupted in whispers.

Maya felt every stare settle on her uniform.

Adrien stepped down from the stage.

“That's enough.”

Vanessa's voice rose.

“Of course you'd defend her! You've been meeting her in private, giving her access to confidential documents, and treating her as if she belongs in this family!”

Maya's face burned.

“I have never asked him for anything.”

“Don't lie to me!”

“I haven't.”

Vanessa moved toward her, diamonds flashing beneath the lights.

“You think because you once knew him, you can walk into this house and take my future?”

Maya held her ground.

“Your future isn't mine to take.”

“Then stay away from him!”

Adrien reached Maya's side.

“Vanessa, stop.”

But Vanessa had already lost control of the performance she had planned so carefully.

“You have no idea what she is!” she shouted. “You don't know what her mother did, or why that woman has spent her entire life hiding the truth from you!”

The room went silent.

Maya felt the photograph inside her jacket.

Adrien stared at Vanessa.

“What do you know about Maya's mother?”

Vanessa's mouth opened.

No answer came.

That was the moment Maya understood that her mother's secret was not simply connected to the past.

Vanessa knew it.

Daniel knew it.

And they were frightened that Maya might finally discover why.

A waiter passed between them carrying a silver tray. Vanessa reached for a glass, but her hand shook so violently that champagne spilled across the white tablecloth.

“Look at you,” she hissed at Maya. “You think he wants you? You're a convenient distraction. That's all.”

Maya's eyes stung, but she refused to look away.

“Then why are you afraid of me?”

Vanessa went still.

Adrien looked at Maya.

Something shifted between them, a recognition deeper than attraction and older than the years they had lost.

He reached for her hand.

“Maya, I need you to trust me.”

She shook her head.

“You keep asking me to trust you without telling me everything.”

“Then let me start here.”

He turned toward the ballroom, took Maya gently by the shoulders, and kissed her.

It lasted less than three seconds.

When he pulled away, the entire room seemed to stop breathing.

Vanessa screamed.

Not because her fiancé had kissed another woman.

Because the kiss had confirmed something she had been trying to prevent.

“No!” she cried. “You can't do this! Not after what your father promised my family!”

Adrien stared at her.

“What did my father promise?”

Vanessa backed away.

Daniel reached for her arm.

“Vanessa. Stop talking.”

She jerked away from him.

“You told me he would sign! You told me the shares would transfer before midnight!”

The words rang through the ballroom.

Every camera turned toward them.

Adrien's face became frighteningly calm.

“Thank you,” he said. “That's the first honest thing either of you has said tonight.”

Daniel lunged for the folder.

Maya moved instinctively, knocking it from his hand before he could reach the stage stairs. Pages scattered across the polished floor.

Guests shouted. Security rushed forward.

Daniel grabbed Maya's wrist.

“Give me the original!”

“I don't have it!”

“Where is it?”

Adrien seized Daniel's arm and forced him away from her.

“Touch her again, and you'll never come near this family.”

Daniel struggled, then looked past Adrien toward the ballroom's main entrance.

A man in a gray overcoat stood there.

Maya recognized him from the photograph her mother had shown her.

He was older now, his hair white at the temples, but his face was unmistakable.

Richard Whitmore.

Adrien's father.

The man everyone believed too ill to attend.

He looked directly at Maya.

Then he said, loud enough for the nearest guests to hear:

May you like

“Michael's daughter should never have been allowed into this house.”

And Adrien turned toward him as if the floor had disappeared beneath his feet.
