Chapter 1 - The Message That Ended Everything

"The fifth time my billionaire husband spent the entire night away with his secretary, I didn’t call, cry, or ask where he was. Instead, at three in the morning, I opened the company group chat with more than five hundred employees and typed, “Mr. Moretti no longer needs to come home. He’s welcome to stay with Miss Carter permanently.” Three seconds after I hit send, Vincent started calling—and by sunrise, his father was demanding a family meeting.
My name is Claire Bennett Moretti, and for three years, I had been married to Vincent Moretti, billionaire CEO of Moretti Holdings and one of Chicago’s most influential businessmen.
To the world, Vincent was brilliant, disciplined, and untouchable.
To me, he had become the husband who simply stopped coming home.
And whenever he disappeared overnight, his beautiful secretary, Sophia Carter, somehow had an explanation.
That night, I sat alone in our Chicago penthouse watching the clock pass three.
I didn’t shed a single tear.
I opened the company chat instead.
Good morning. This is Claire Moretti.
Thank you, Miss Carter, for taking such excellent care of my husband.
Starting today, Vincent is welcome to stay with you permanently. I’ve changed the door code. His belongings will be delivered to company reception.
Then I pressed send.
The read count exploded.
Twelve.
Two hundred.
Four hundred eighty.
My phone rang.
Vincent.
I declined.
He called again.
Declined.
On his third attempt, I switched off my phone and walked into our bedroom.
I packed every suit, shirt, tie, watch, and pair of shoes that belonged to him.
For three years, I had been quiet because I thought dignity meant handling humiliation privately.
That night, I finally realized my silence had only made Vincent comfortable.
At seven the next morning, I walked through the marble lobby of Moretti Holdings dragging two large suitcases.
The receptionist stared at me.
“Mrs. Moretti?”
“These belong to Vincent.”
I placed an envelope on top.
“And so do these.”
She looked down.
Divorce papers.
Her mouth opened slightly as whispers spread through the lobby.
I walked away without turning around.
Outside, I switched my phone back on.
Sixty-three messages.
Twenty-seven missed calls.
Then Vincent’s father called.
“Claire,” Richard Moretti said.
“Good morning, Richard.”
“I’ve heard what happened.”
“I assumed you would.”
His voice tightened. “Vincent has been staying out all night, five hundred employees are discussing your marriage, and now you’ve delivered divorce papers to his office.”
“Yes.”
There was a long silence.
“Both of you are coming to the family house today.”
“Why?”
“Because I want the truth.”
After we hung up, I called Nathan Brooks, my old college friend and now a partner at one of Chicago’s most powerful law firms.
“I need your help.”
His tone changed immediately.
“What happened?”
“I want a divorce.”
At two that afternoon, I sat across from Nathan in his downtown office.
“I don’t want Vincent’s billions,” I told him.
Nathan lifted his pen.
“Then what do you want?”
“Only what belonged to me before the marriage.”
I explained that my father had given me a riverside mansion on Chicago’s North Shore as a wedding gift. The deed had always remained solely in my name.
Nathan wrote everything down.
Then my phone vibrated again.
Richard Moretti.
I stared at his name on the screen.
“Vincent’s father is calling everyone together,” I said.
Nathan studied my face.
“And what are you going to do?”
I looked at the unsigned copy of my divorce petition.
“For the first time in three years, I’m going to stop protecting Vincent.”
Outside the window, Chicago continued moving as though nothing had happened.
But somewhere across the city, my billionaire husband was facing five hundred employees who had already read my message.
His father was waiting.
Sophia was about to be named.

And this time, when the Moretti family asked why their perfect marriage had collapsed, I intended to tell them everything.
