Chapter 8 - THE WOMAN WHO CHOSE TO TELL THE TRUTH

The message arrived at 11:14 p.m.

Your father is alive. Meet me tomorrow, alone.

It was signed with a single initial.

R.

Rebecca advised Claire not to respond. Grant insisted that any meeting would require professional security. Claire agreed, but she refused to let fear make every decision for her.

They arranged a controlled meeting at a public library in New Haven.

A woman in her sixties approached Claire carrying a canvas bag. She introduced herself as Agent Ruth Ellis, a former federal investigator who had worked on Richard Bennett's case.

“Your father survived,” Ellis said. “But the investigation was compromised. We couldn't protect him without exposing you.”

“Where is he?”

“I don't know his current location.”

Claire's hope faltered.

“Then why contact me?”

Ellis removed a photograph from the bag.

It showed Richard Bennett standing outside a train station three months earlier.

“He contacted me recently. He said Martin Cole had begun moving money again and that you were in danger.”

“Why didn't he contact me himself?”

“Because he believed his communications were being monitored.”

Claire looked at the photograph until the image blurred.

“Did he ever try to come home?”

Ellis hesitated.

“Yes. Several times.”

“Then why didn't he?”

“Because he thought his enemies would use you against him. He made the decision for you, and he may have been wrong.”

Claire felt both relief and anger.

Her father had survived. He had loved her. He had also allowed her to grieve him for years.

She could understand the fear without accepting the choice.

Ellis handed her a small memory card.

“This contains part of the original investigation. It identifies the people who authorized the data transfers. Martin is only one of them.”

“Who else?”

“Someone with access to the federal case files.”

Before Claire could ask more, a man stepped from behind a bookshelf and called Ellis by name.

She went rigid.

Ellis immediately stood.

“Leave now,” she told Claire.

A struggle broke out. Grant's security team moved in from the entrance, but the man escaped through a side door.

Ellis had been wounded in the arm. As paramedics treated her, she grabbed Claire's wrist.

“Don't trust the official report about your father's death,” she whispered. “The person who signed it is still working.”

That night, Grant received confirmation that Martin had attempted to leave the country using a false passport.

Authorities intercepted him at the airport.

During questioning, he admitted moving the money but claimed he had been following orders from someone whose identity he refused to disclose.

When Grant confronted him, Martin finally spoke.

“Your wife isn't the only person who inherited something from Richard Bennett.”

“What does that mean?”

Martin smiled bitterly.

“It means your daughter is already part of the succession plan.”

Grant went still.

“What succession plan?”

Martin leaned back.

“Ask your father.”

Grant knew his father was dead.

But Martin's expression suggested he had never believed that story.
