Chapter 9 - THE MOTHER'S CONFESSION

Margaret sat down.

For the first time in Julian's life, his mother looked like someone who had nowhere left to hide.

She explained that Catherine had discovered the foundation's money was being used to finance a private medical program. The program claimed to provide specialized care for vulnerable children, but some of the patients existed only on paper.

The money had been diverted through accounts connected to a company called Aster Clinical Holdings.

Margaret had approved several transfers.

She believed the payments were legitimate and that her late husband's private financial arrangements required secrecy.

When Catherine began asking questions, Margaret became frightened.

“If the foundation collapsed,” she said, “hundreds of people would lose their jobs. Hospitals would lose funding. Your grandfather's legacy would be destroyed.”

“So you chose to protect the money instead of your family.”

“I chose to protect what I thought was your family.”

Julian looked at her.

“Those are not the same thing.”

Margaret lowered her head.

Catherine had confronted her two nights before her death. She had threatened to take the evidence to the authorities and expose the financial fraud.

Margaret had called Daniel, hoping he could persuade Catherine to wait.

But someone else had been listening.

Dr. Reed.

He had been managing the medical program and had access to Catherine's treatment records. He told Margaret that Catherine was becoming unstable and that a public confrontation could destroy her credibility.

Margaret believed him.

She signed documents restricting access to certain records and authorized changes to the foundation's private accounts.

Then Catherine died.

Margaret accepted the hospital's explanation.

When Daniel began asking questions, Reed warned her that the investigation would expose the forged financial documents and implicate everyone who had signed them.

Margaret panicked.

She allowed Daniel's disappearance to remain unexplained and accepted the story of the plane crash.

But the worst decision came afterward.

Catherine had left instructions concerning Lily, including legal documents intended to restore Elena's parental rights and establish Lily's relationship with Noah.

Margaret had those documents concealed.

She told herself she was protecting Noah from confusion.

In reality, she was protecting the family from scandal.

“What about the room?” Julian asked. “Why did you keep it hidden?”

“Catherine left copies of the records there. I thought if nobody found them, the problem would disappear.”

“And Noah?”

Margaret began to cry.

“When Catherine died, he kept asking for her. He would wake up at night and cry until he couldn't breathe. I thought if we stopped discussing her, he would eventually recover.”

“You told him that words make people disappear.”

“I was trying to stop him from suffering.”

“You taught him that speaking was dangerous.”

Margaret covered her face.

“I know.”

Julian wanted to hate her.

Part of him did.

But the woman sitting before him was not a stranger. She was his mother, a woman whose fear had become so powerful that she had mistaken control for love.

Understanding that did not excuse her.

It only made the betrayal harder to bear.

“Who killed Catherine?” he asked.

Margaret looked up.

“Dr. Reed.”

Daniel stiffened.

“How do you know?”

“Because I found a message he sent to someone the morning after Catherine died. He said the problem had been resolved and that the original records were secure.”

“Who was he messaging?”

Margaret slid a page across the table.

The recipient was listed only as A.C.

Julian stared at the initials.

“Do you know who A.C. is?”

“No.”

“Then we still don't know who ordered it.”

Margaret shook her head.

“I don't know whether anyone ordered it. Reed may have acted alone.”

Julian looked at the records again.

“Why come forward now?”

“Because someone contacted me yesterday. They said if I didn't transfer control of Noah's trust, they would release evidence suggesting I had killed Catherine.”

“Who contacted you?”

“A woman.”

“Name?”

“She said she was calling on behalf of Aster Clinical Holdings.”

Daniel rose.

“Did you record the conversation?”

Margaret nodded.

She produced her phone and played the recording.

A woman's voice emerged, smooth and controlled.

“Mrs. Cross, the board is losing patience. Your son is asking questions, and the children are becoming a liability.”

Margaret's voice answered, “I did what you asked. I kept the records hidden.”

“You were paid to keep them hidden. Don't confuse the arrangement.”

“Did you kill Catherine?”

A pause.

Then the woman laughed softly.

“Catherine killed herself the moment she decided she was more loyal to the truth than to her family.”

The recording ended.

Julian felt his hands shaking.

The voice was familiar.

He replayed it.

Again.

Again.

Then he recognized the cadence, the slight breath before the final word, the cold amusement.

“That's impossible,” he whispered.

Daniel looked at him.

“Who is it?”

Julian stared at the phone.

“Catherine's sister.”

Her name was Amelia Vale.

She had been declared dead in a boating accident eleven years earlier. Catherine had grieved for her privately, rarely speaking about the loss.

But Julian remembered one detail.

Amelia had worked in financial compliance before her death.

And A.C. had been her initials before she married.

“She's alive,” Julian said.

Margaret shook her head.

“No. I attended her memorial.”

“Then someone staged her death.”

Daniel closed the medical case.

“If Amelia is behind Aster Clinical, she has access to every account, every record, and every person who helped cover up the fraud.”

Julian's phone rang.

It was Elena.

He answered immediately.

“What's wrong?”

Her voice was strained.

“Julian, you need to come to the hospital. Someone accessed Lily's medical records and changed her emergency contact.”

“Who?”

“I don't know. But the nurse says the change was authorized by someone claiming to be a member of your family.”

Julian turned toward the door.

“Keep Lily in the room. Don't let anyone take her anywhere.”

May you like

Then Elena said something that stopped him cold.

“Noah is missing.”
