Chapter 9 - THE WOMAN WHO DELIVERED LILY

Emily spent the night sitting beside Lily’s bed, watching her sleep. The DNA report lay folded in her bag. She had not told Lily the full truth yet, because a child deserved more than a frightening revelation delivered in a hospital corridor. But Emily could no longer ignore the question that haunted her: if Lily was not biologically hers, where was the baby she had carried?

Daniel sat beside her near dawn.

“You don’t have to decide what this means tonight,” he said.

Emily stared at Lily’s sleeping face. “I remember being pregnant. I remember the delivery room. I remember the nurse placing her in my arms.”

“I believe you.”

“What if the baby I gave birth to was taken? What if Lily was placed in my arms so I wouldn’t ask questions?”

Daniel took her hand. “Then we find out what happened. And whatever the truth is, Lily is still our daughter.”

Emily leaned against him, exhausted. “I know that in my heart. I just need to know what they did.”

Dr. Rebecca Shaw had left behind a forwarding address, but it led to an empty apartment. Investigators traced a recent payment to a cabin outside Albany. Daniel and Emily went with them, refusing to let another stranger control the story of their family.

They found Dr. Shaw packing a suitcase. She was in her late fifties, with silver hair pulled into a tight bun. When she saw Emily, she began to cry.

“I wondered when you would find me.”

“Tell me what happened,” Emily said.

Dr. Shaw sat down. Seven years earlier, she had been a resident at the hospital where Emily delivered. The hospital’s maternity records were managed by a senior administrator who was later convicted of insurance fraud. On the night of Emily’s delivery, a baby was born with a respiratory complication. Another infant, Clara, was delivered in a private room under Eleanor Hayes’s name.

Jonathan Pierce had arranged for both records to be altered. His plan was to use the babies as leverage in the property dispute, believing that the families would remain silent to avoid scandal. Dr. Shaw had been pressured to sign a false discharge summary. She had told herself the children would be safe, and that she could correct the records later.

“Which baby did Emily give birth to?” Daniel asked.

Dr. Shaw’s tears fell faster. “You gave birth to a girl who was taken to the neonatal unit. She was stable by morning. But before you woke fully from the anesthesia, the administrator changed the wristbands and moved the babies. You were handed Clara—who became Lily—and the other child was placed with a foster family under a false name.”

Emily covered her mouth. “Where is my daughter?”

“I don’t know her current name. The placement records were changed twice. I kept one copy of the original transfer sheet. It’s in my safe.”

She gave them a key.

Inside the safe was a birth record naming Emily’s biological daughter as Grace Whitmore, along with a photograph of a baby with a tiny star-shaped mark near her shoulder. The transfer sheet showed she had been placed with a family in Vermont. The last known address was eight years old.

Daniel’s hands trembled as he read the record. “You let us believe everything was normal.”

“I was afraid,” Dr. Shaw whispered. “Jonathan said he would destroy my career and have my husband arrested. I thought I could protect the children by staying quiet. I was wrong.”

“You were wrong,” Emily said, her voice breaking. “And you stole seven years from us.”

Dr. Shaw did not defend herself. She signed a statement and agreed to testify. Investigators began searching for Grace immediately.

That afternoon, Daniel received a call from Samuel. They had located the foster family. The couple had adopted Grace legally after being told her birth parents had died. They had raised her with love and believed the adoption records were genuine. When investigators explained the fraud, the couple agreed to cooperate and let Grace meet Emily when the child was ready.

Emily cried with relief and terror in equal measure. She had spent seven years loving Lily as her own. Now she was preparing to meet the daughter she had been forced to lose without ever knowing.

Lily, when told in careful words that another baby had been born to Emily that night, listened with solemn eyes.

“Can Grace come here?” she asked.

“If she wants to,” Emily said.

“Then I’ll show her my room.”

Daniel held both of them close. For the first time, the truth was no longer something hidden in envelopes and recordings. It was a person who might come home.

But before the meeting could be arranged, a message arrived from an unknown number. It contained a recent photograph of a teenage girl standing outside a school in Vermont.

On the back was a single sentence:

*You found the wrong daughter.*

Daniel stared at the image. The girl’s face was blurred, but the star-shaped mark on her shoulder was visible.

Then his phone rang.

A woman whispered, “Daniel, don’t let Emily meet Grace. The child you’re looking for is already inside your house.”

The call ended.

Daniel turned toward the hallway, where Lily and Clara were laughing softly together.

And from the other side of the door, a third little voice answered them.
