THE ASHES OF SOPHIE DELUCA / Chapter 1 / 10

Chapter 1 - The Last Thing He Chose

At my daughter’s funeral, I discovered she had died because my husband was rushing his mistress to the airport for a secret trip. That night, I took my daughter’s ashes and disappeared—and within days, my husband was tearing Chicago apart trying to find me.

My name is Claire DeLuca. For nine years, I had been married to Adrian DeLuca, one of the most powerful men in Chicago.

The hospital called me at 4:12 that afternoon.

A trauma nurse told me Adrian’s SUV had gone off a mountain road. There had been three people inside—my husband, our seven-year-old daughter Sophie, and another woman.

Vivian Cole.

The woman I had long suspected was Adrian’s mistress.

When I reached the hospital, a doctor met me outside the trauma bay.

“Your husband is alive,” he said. “He has several fractures, but he’s stable.”

I swallowed hard.

“And Sophie?”

The doctor paused.

That pause destroyed me.

“She suffered severe head trauma. I’m sorry.”

My daughter was gone.

That morning, Sophie had eaten strawberry cereal and complained that her ponytail was crooked. Before school, she hugged me and asked, “Mommy, can we make pasta tonight?”

Those were the last words I ever heard from her.

Three days later, Adrian woke up.

I was beside his bed when he opened his eyes.

His first word was not Sophie.

“Vivian.”

I froze.

“Is she alive?”

“Yes.”

His shoulders relaxed.

Then I said, “Sophie is dead.”

His face went blank.

A week later, at Sophie’s funeral, I stepped into a quiet hallway and heard Vivian crying behind a half-open door.

“I shouldn’t have called you that day.”

Adrian answered, “Drop it.”

Then I heard everything.

Vivian had been afraid of missing a flight for their secret trip. She had pressured Adrian to hurry. Instead of taking Sophie home first, he put Vivian in the SUV and drove toward the airport.

Fast.

Too fast.

“I kept telling you to go faster,” Vivian whispered.

Adrian said, “I was driving.”

Then she asked, “What if Claire finds out?”

His answer came instantly.

“She won’t touch you.”

My hands went cold.

Vivian started crying harder.

“But Sophie was your daughter.”

There was a pause.

Then Adrian said quietly, “Maybe she just wasn’t meant to stay.”

That was the moment something inside me died too.

I went home alone.

I packed my passport, cash, a few clothes, Sophie’s stuffed rabbit, her photograph, and the urn holding her ashes.

Then I took off my wedding ring.

I placed it on top of the signed divorce papers and left Adrian a note.

I know everything.

I know why Sophie died.

I know who you chose to protect.

Don’t look for me.

Then I disappeared.

By the next morning, Adrian had men checking airports, hotels, train stations, highways, private airfields, and traffic cameras across Chicago.

Three days passed.

Nothing.

On the fourth night, they finally found footage of me walking into a narrow alley, Sophie’s urn held against my chest.

I went in.

I never came back out.

Adrian watched the footage over and over.

Then one of his men burst into the room.

“Boss.”

Adrian turned sharply.

“What?”
