Chapter 7 - THE MAN AT THE GATE

Tobias had protected Stefan for twelve years.
He had stood outside hospital rooms.
Slept in cars.
Taken a knife meant for Stefan in Montreal.
He knew every alarm code at the Oakville estate.
Every emergency route.
Every member of Elara's security detail.
And he had known exactly where Northglass was.
Stefan called him once.
No answer.
Again.
Nothing.
On the third attempt, Tobias's phone went dead.
Lucian swore.
Elara's blood turned cold.
"Maeve."
Stefan was already moving.
The baby remained at the hospital under private security.
But who had selected that security?
Tobias.
Stefan called the hospital directly.
A nurse answered.
"Maeve Voss."
Typing.
A pause.
"She's in neonatal care."
"Who is outside her room?"
"Security."
"Names."
She gave him two.
Neither worked directly for Tobias.
Stefan exhaled.
"Lock the unit."
"Sir?"
"Now."
Authorities detained Armon.
Camille agreed to cooperate.
But Tobias had disappeared.
By sunrise, Stefan's empire was being searched by investigators and audited from three directions.
News outlets reported that Voss Atlantic had voluntarily opened its books.
The company's stock fell twenty-three percent before trading was halted.
Stefan watched the number on a hospital television.
Elara sat beside Maeve.
"Does it hurt?"
"What?"
"Watching the company collapse."
He considered the question.
"Less than watching you leave."
"That's almost romantic."
"Almost?"
"Don't get ambitious."
He smiled faintly.
The smile disappeared when Lucian entered.
"We found Tobias's vehicle."
"Where?"
"Airport parking."
"Flight?"
"None under his name."
Elara looked at him.
"Maybe he isn't running."
Stefan understood instantly.
"He's cleaning up."
Lucian nodded.
"That's my concern."
The next target would be evidence.
Or Camille.
Or Elara.
Stefan wanted to move Elara and Maeve.
Elara refused until Maeve's doctors cleared her.
For once, Stefan did not argue.
Instead, he sat outside the NICU himself.
For thirty-six hours.
He took calls from the corridor.
Signed documents on his laptop.
Ordered nothing without asking Elara first.
At three in the morning, she found him asleep with his head against the wall again.
She sat beside him.
He woke instantly.
"Everything okay?"
"Yes."
She handed him coffee.
He stared at it.
"What?"
"You brought me coffee."
"Don't read into it."
"I wouldn't dare."
They sat in silence.
Then Elara asked the question she had avoided.
"Did you love Camille?"
"No."
"Did you tell her you did?"
"No."
"Did you ever wish you were married to her?"
"No."
"Did you think about me when you were with her?"
Stefan's face tightened.
"Sometimes."
"That's worse."
"I know."
She looked at her coffee.
"Why didn't you stop?"
He took a long time.
"Because every time I crossed the line, the next crossing felt smaller."
Elara looked at him.
"That's the first explanation you've given that I believe."
"It's the least flattering."
"That's probably why."
He nodded.
"I thought because I still came home, still loved you, still protected you, the betrayal existed in a separate compartment."
"And now?"
"There are no separate compartments."
He looked through the glass toward Maeve.
"Everything reaches home eventually."
Elara swallowed.
She wanted to hate him cleanly.
He kept making it difficult.
Not by asking forgiveness.
By finally becoming accountable.
A nurse appeared.
"Mrs. Voss? Maeve can likely be discharged tomorrow."
Elara smiled.
Stefan closed his eyes with relief.
The nurse continued.
"She'll need follow-up appointments, but she's doing beautifully."
For one fragile minute, they were simply parents.
Then the hospital lights went out.
Emergency lights activated.
Red.
Dim.
Stefan stood immediately.
A scream sounded down the corridor.
Lucian came running.
"Fire alarm."
Stefan's instincts sharpened.
"Where?"
"Lower electrical room."
Elara looked at him.
"Tobias."
Stefan nodded.
"Stay here."
"No."
"Elara—"
She pointed toward Maeve.
"I am not leaving our daughter."
"Neither am I."
That stopped her.
Stefan pulled out his phone.
No signal.
Jammed.
Lucian checked the stairwell.
"Someone's controlling the elevators."
Then a familiar voice came through the corridor.
"Stefan."
Tobias stepped into the red emergency light.
He held no weapon visibly.
That made him more dangerous.
Stefan moved between him and the NICU.
Tobias looked exhausted.
"I'm not here for the baby."
"Good."
"I'm here for Elara's copy."
"Don't have it."
"She does."
Elara appeared behind Stefan.
"No."
Tobias looked at her.
"Mrs. Voss."
"Tobias."
"I'm sorry."
"Are you?"
He lowered his eyes.
"Armon owns my brother's debts. Has for years."
Stefan's face hardened.
"You could have told me."
"And you'd have paid them."
"Yes."
"Then I would owe you instead."
Stefan stared at the man who had stood beside him for twelve years.
"You already had my loyalty."
"That's the problem with men like you. You call loyalty what everyone else calls dependence."
The accusation landed.
Elara watched Stefan absorb it rather than reject it.
Tobias looked at her.
"The ledger."
"I gave everything to investigators."
"Not everything."
"Then you know more than I do."
Tobias's expression changed.
Elara saw it.
A bluff.
He wasn't sure there was another copy.
She stepped forward.
"Armon lied to you."
"Stay back," Stefan said quietly.
Elara ignored him.
"He told you the ledger could implicate your brother."
Tobias said nothing.
"It can't."
"You don't know that."
"I reconciled the accounts. I know every transaction."
His certainty cracked.
Elara continued.
"Your brother's name isn't there."
"You're lying."
"No."
Behind Tobias, police appeared at the far stairwell.
He heard them.
His shoulders fell.
Twelve years of fear ended in one exhausted breath.
Tobias raised his hands.
Then he looked at Stefan.
"I did protect her, you know."
Stefan's eyes were cold.
"Until you didn't."
Tobias nodded.
"Fair."
He surrendered.
An hour later, the hospital lights returned.
Elara sat beside Maeve's crib.
Stefan entered quietly.
"Tobias is in custody."
She nodded.
He stood awkwardly.
"Can I hold her?"
Elara looked up.
The question mattered.
Not because he needed permission to be Maeve's father.
Because Stefan had finally learned that love did not erase boundaries.
She lifted their daughter carefully and placed her in his arms.
Maeve opened her eyes.
Stefan stared down.
"Hi."
Elara watched him.
Maeve wrapped her tiny fingers around his index finger.
Stefan's eyes filled.
"Your mother is terrifying."
Elara almost laughed.
"Don't recruit the baby."
"I'm giving her accurate information."
For the first time since Suite 14, Elara laughed.
A real laugh.
Stefan looked up.
Hope appeared on his face.
Elara saw it.
"Don't."
He immediately lowered his eyes.
"Sorry."
But after he left that evening, Elara realized something frightening.
She had not forgiven him.
She still did not trust him.
May you like
But somewhere beneath all the wreckage, she still loved him.
And love, she was discovering, was not the same thing as deciding to stay.
