Chapter 12 - THE FINAL PIECE

The return to Chicago was triumphant.

When we walked through the front doors of the Moretti mansion, Lily was playing on the foyer rug.

She stopped, staring at the little girl holding Leonardo's hand.

The twin sisters looked at each other, their green eyes wide with wonder.

Within minutes, they were sitting together on the rug, sharing toys as if they had never been separated a day in their lives.

I stood in the doorway of the grand living room, holding baby Matteo, crying happy tears.

We had done it.

We had found every piece of the puzzle Matteo left behind. We had brought his family back together.

Leonardo walked up behind me.

He gently wrapped his arm around my shoulders, looking at the three beautiful children playing on the floor.

“He would be so incredibly proud of you, Emma,” Leonardo said softly.

“We did it together, Leo.”

He looked down at me.

“The trust is finalized. Evelyn has been given a permanent home on the estate and a pension for the rest of her life. Thorne is facing federal life sentences, and the Commission has backed away from our legitimate businesses completely.”

I leaned my head against his shoulder.

“It's finally over.”

“Yes,” Leonardo smiled. “It's over.”

He reached into his pocket.

He pulled out the gold pocket watch. Matteo's watch.

He didn't open it. He simply placed it in my hand.

“Keep it safe for little Matteo,” he said. “Until he's old enough to understand what his father sacrificed for this family.”

I closed my fingers around the warm gold.

I looked at the man who had terrified me months ago. The Mafia boss I thought would destroy my life.

Instead, he had saved it.

We stood there together, the matriarch and the protector, watching our children laugh in the sunlight.

The shadows of the past were gone.

And for the first time in my life, I knew that the future belonged entirely to us.
