Chapter 5 - WHY THOMAS CHOSE VINCENTAdrian chose a church.

Not because he was religious.

Because cameras.

Public.

Quiet.

Harder to ambush.

Vincent hated it.

Mave appreciated logic.

They arrived separately.

Adrian sat in last pew.

Scar across eyebrow.

Older than ballroom light had shown.

He looked at Mave first.

“You look like Thomas.”

She did not appreciate it.

“Everyone says that.”

“He would hate that.”

“Why?”

“He thought you looked like your mother.”

That hurt.

Personal familiarity.

“You knew him.”

“Yes.”

“How?”

“Not well.”

“Enough to know that.”

Adrian looked toward Vincent.

“Your father introduced us.”

Thomas needed contact inside North Crown.

Adrian became one.

Not innocent.

He had helped Leo.

Sold route information.

Took money.

Then realized Marco was using North Crown to undermine Salvatore and eventually take power.

Adrian wanted out.

Thomas offered path.

“Evidence.”

“Yes.”

“You helped my father gather it.”

“Yes.”

“Then he died.”

Adrian looked ashamed.

“I was supposed to meet him that night.”

“You didn’t.”

“No.”

“Why?”

“Leo found out.”

“Did you warn Dad?”

“I tried.”

“No answer.”

“Then?”

“I ran.”

Mave’s anger flared.

“You ran.”

“Yes.”

“He died.”

“Yes.”

“You lived.”

“Yes.”

Adrian accepted each accusation without excuse.

Good.

“Did Leo kill him?”

“I believe so.”

“Believe?”

“I saw Leo follow him.”

“Did you see crash?”

“No.”

“What happened?”

Thomas’s car was forced into barrier.

Not direct shooting.

Leo likely rammed.

Police called weather-related accident.

Adrian had no proof except route logs.

Box 614 did.

He placed metal case on pew.

Vincent reached.

Adrian stopped.

“Mave.”

Her father’s evidence.

She opened.

Ledger.

North Crown payments.

Marco Costa signatures through proxies.

Leo.

Sofia early authorization.

Adrian.

Police contacts.

City officials.

Then medical payment.

Marco to private nurse handling Salvatore’s medication.

Two days before death.

Proof.

Vincent stared.

His father murdered.

Maybe.

At least evidence of suspicious payment.

Then another section.

Thomas’s handwritten notes.

V.C.

Vincent Costa.

Mave read.

Salvatore says Vincent is different. I don’t know him enough to agree.

Later entry:

Saw Vincent refuse Marco’s suggestion to “make an inspector disappear.” Maybe Salvatore is right.

Vincent looked.

He remembered.

Twenty-five.

An inspector threatening warehouse closure.

Marco joked about handling him.

Vincent refused violence.

Thomas had witnessed from distance.

Another note:

If Salvatore falls, Vincent may inherit. If he becomes like the rest, destroy this. If not, give him a chance.

Mave felt tears.

Her father did not blindly trust Vincent.

He evaluated.

Watched.

Chose conditionally.

Then final envelope:

MAVE.

Her hands shook.

She opened.

Sweetheart,

If you are reading this, then one of two things happened.

Either I became paranoid enough to embarrass us all, or I was right.

I hope it’s the first.

Mave cried.

Thomas continued.

Do not spend your life finishing my fight.

That sentence stopped her.

If evidence reaches you, give it to someone who can use it, then live.

You were seven when I wrote this.

You think dragons are real and broccoli is a personal betrayal.

I hope by the time you read it, at least one of those opinions changed.

Mave laughed through tears.

Vincent looked away.

Privacy.

Then:

If Vincent Costa is the man his father hopes he can become, he may help.

But do not trust him because I wrote his name.

Make him earn it.

Mave closed her eyes.

Of course.

Her father.

No blind trust.

Make him earn it.

Adrian handed second envelope to Vincent.

Salvatore’s handwriting.

Vincent opened.

Son,

If Thomas has reached you before I have told you everything, then I failed.

Vincent’s face changed.

Salvatore admitted.

North Crown.

Sofia’s involvement.

Marco.

Leo.

His own compromises.

He wrote:

I kept you outside because I wanted one child in this family to believe power could be used without becoming poison.

That was cowardice disguised as protection.

If you inherit, do not keep men close merely because they know your secrets.

Especially Leo.

Vincent laughed bitterly.

Too late.

Salvatore continued:

And do not become me.

Short.

Brutal.

Effective.

Vincent folded letter.

Adrian said:

“Marco knows I took ledger.”

“What does he want?”

“Destroy it.”

“Where is Leo?”

“With him.”

“Where?”

“New Jersey.”

“Specific.”

“Costa container yard.”

Mave’s stomach tightened.

The trucking company where $30,000 disappeared.

Exactly.

“What was money for?”

Adrian answered:

“Escape fund.”

Leo moved money because he planned leaving with Marco if evidence surfaced.

So Mave’s discrepancy exposed current movement.

That’s why watcher targeted her.

Not only because father.

Because she accidentally saw first active transfer.

Vincent looked at Mave.

“You found thirty thousand dollars and started a war.”

She laughed weakly.

“Occupational hazard.”

Adrian continued:

“Marco has Sofia’s husband.”

Everyone froze.

Sofia.

Her husband Daniel in Boston.

Kidnapped?

“Yes.”

“Why?”

“To force Sofia to recant if ledger public.”

Vincent called sister.

No answer.

Again.

Adrian said:

“She’s already driving south.”

“To Marco?”

“Yes.”

Damn.

Vincent immediately moved.

Mave caught arm.

“Police.”

He stared.

Adrian did too.

Costa world historically handled internally.

Mave said:

“My father died because everyone kept this inside families.”

Vincent looked at ledger.

True.

“If we go alone, cycle continues.”

He hated it.

She saw.

Then he called FBI contact.

Not corrupt one.

A prosecutor he had quietly worked with on legitimate transition.

Agent Rebecca Sloan.

Full evidence.

North Crown.

Thomas death.

Salvatore suspected murder.

Kidnapping.

Sofia husband.

Marco.

Leo.

Federal operation.

Vincent surrendered more than he ever had.

Potential self-incrimination.

Old business exposure.

He knew.

Mave asked:

“You sure?”

“No.”

Good.

They prepared.

Sofia’s phone pinged near New Jersey yard.

Daniel’s phone off.

Marco called Vincent.

“Bring ledger.”

Vincent answered.

“You have Daniel.”

“Yes.”

“Put Sofia on.”

“She came willingly.”

Sofia’s voice in background:

“Vincent, don’t—”

Then muffled.

Marco:

“Your sister has spent thirteen years pretending she wasn’t part of this.”

“She was.”

Vincent did not absolve.

“But you used her.”

“Everyone uses everyone.”

There it was.

Old worldview.

Mave looked at Vincent.

He did not respond emotionally.

“What do you want?”

“Ledger.”

“For Daniel.”

“And Adrian.”

Adrian smiled without humor.

“He still hates me.”

“Why?”

Adrian answered:

“I was supposed to be his successor in security until Leo framed me as thief.”

Layers.

Marco had pitted everyone.

Vincent agreed to exchange.

With federal team covert.

Mave would stay behind.

Then she said no.

Vincent stared.

“Absolutely not.”

“Here we go again.”

“Mave.”

“Marco has been targeting me.”

“Yes.”

“He wants ledger.”

“Yes.”

“He expects you.”

“Yes.”

“He doesn’t expect me to carry copy.”

Vincent understood.

“No.”

“I can distract.”

“No.”

“Why?”

“Because I—”

He stopped.

Because he loved her?

Maybe.

Not said yet.

Mave looked.

“Because what?”

Vincent’s voice lowered.

“Because if something happens to you, I will not recover.”

Silence.

There it was.

Not declaration exactly.

Worse.

Truer.

Mave felt heart twist.

“Then don’t make me disappear from my own story.”

Vincent closed eyes.

She continued.

“My father told me to give evidence to someone who can use it, then live.”

“Yes.”

“I intend to live.”

“I know.”

“But I also intend to choose.”

He looked at her.

Then nodded.

“Body armor.”

“Fine.”

“Stay with Sloan.”

“Mostly.”

“Mave.”

“Fine.”

At container yard, rain returned.

Of course.

Steel rows.

Floodlights.

Marco waited inside dispatch office.

Seventy.

Gray hair.

Still imposing.

Leo beside him.

Sofia seated.

Daniel alive.

Hands tied.

Vincent entered with ledger case.

Mave and agents hidden.

Marco smiled.

“Nephew.”

“Uncle.”

“You finally look like Salvatore.”

Vincent replied:

“I hope not.”

Marco’s smile vanished.

Good.

Exchange began.

Then Leo saw something.

A reflection.

Federal scope.

He shouted.

Gunfire.

Chaos.

Sofia dropped.

Daniel moved.

Vincent tackled Marco behind desk.

Leo ran toward side exit.

Mave saw.

Agent Sloan shouted stay.

Mave did not chase.

Good.

She noticed something else.

Leo moving toward fuel control panel.

Why?

He intended fire.

Destroy yard.

Evidence.

People.

Mave grabbed radio.

“He’s going for suppression controls!”

Agents redirected.

Leo locked control room.

Started emergency valve sequence.

Not explosion instructions detailed.

Just dangerous sabotage.

Vincent heard.

Ran.

Marco grabbed gun.

Adrian appeared from side door and knocked it away.

Marco stared.

“You.”

Adrian replied:

“Still alive.”

Federal agents took Marco.

Control room door breached.

Leo cornered.

He raised weapon.

Then saw Mave through glass.

His face changed.

Thomas’s daughter.

He lowered gun slightly.

“Mave.”

She stared.

“You killed my father.”

Leo’s mouth tightened.

“He wouldn’t stop.”

There.

Confession.

Not full legal certainty but spoken.

“He had a family.”

“So did I.”

“What does that mean?”

“Marco would’ve killed mine.”

Again.

Fear.

Mave’s eyes filled.

“So you chose mine.”

Leo said nothing.

That was answer.

Agents arrested him.

No revenge.

No bullet from Vincent.

Thomas had written: give evidence, then live.

They did.

Outside, Vincent found Mave.

Rain.

Sirens.

Sofia crying with Daniel.

Adrian cuffed too because his crimes remained.

Marco taken.

Leo taken.

Vincent stared at Mave.

“You disobeyed one instruction.”

She frowned.

“Which?”

“You moved from Sloan.”

“Six feet.”

“Still.”

“Control panel.”

“I know.”

He looked angry.

Then pulled her into arms.

Hard.

Mave froze.

Then hugged him back.

Vincent whispered:

“Never do that again.”

She laughed into coat.

“No promises.”

He pulled back.

“Wrong answer.”

“Honest answer.”

He almost smiled.

Then he kissed her.

Not planned.

Not public strategy.

Rain.

Adrenaline.

Three years of tension breaking at once.

Mave kissed him back.

Then immediately stepped away.

“This is terrible timing.”

“Agreed.”

“Your family is being arrested.”

“Yes.”

“My father’s murderer just confessed.”

“Yes.”

“You are my boss.”

Vincent froze.

That mattered.

He took a step back.

“You’re right.”

Good.

Mave looked at him.

“We talk later.”

“Yes.”

“And I quit.”

His face fell.

“What?”

“I cannot be your secretary if this becomes anything.”

He stared.

“You’re serious.”

“Yes.”

Vincent looked almost offended.

“You are the only person who understands my calendar.”

Mave laughed.

“Hire someone.”

May you like

“No one is you.”

That sentence stayed with her.
