Chapter 7 - The Fall of the King

Over the next four weeks, the formidable Grant Whitmore disintegrated.

He did not set foot in his Midtown office. The multi-million-dollar hospitality deal in Naples collapsed after he failed to attend the final signing conference. Board members called emergency sessions; institutional investors sent frantic inquiries; corporate rivals smelled blood in the water and began shorting his public holdings.

Grant cared about none of it.

He lived in the Westchester house like a phantom, sleeping on the floor of the unfurnished nursery, surrounded by the unpainted walls and the empty crib he had never helped assemble. The room smelled faintly of cedar and fresh primer. Every morning, he would wake up reach out for Hannah, only to find the cold, hard reality of his own ruin.

Walter had stabilized, miraculously pulling through the overdose thanks to emergency dialysis, but the family remained fractured beyond repair. Margaret refused to answer Grant's calls. When he drove to his parents' home in Queens, the gate remained locked. When he sent Ethan a complete, state-of-the-art professional engineering bridge modeling kit accompanied by a handwritten five-page letter of apology, the box was returned to his doorstep the next day, unopened, with a note from Rebecca: He doesn't want your toys. He wanted his uncle.

One evening in late October, a torrential autumn rain slammed against the nursery windows. Grant sat on the floor, an unopened bottle of bourbon beside him, clutching the old photograph from their Amalfi honeymoon.

His phone buzzed on the floor.

Grant picked it up with numb indifference, expecting another panicked voicemail from his corporate counsel.

Instead, the screen showed a call from an unlisted number originating from an area code in upstate New York—Otsego County.

Grant swiped the screen with trembling fingers. "Hello?"

A clinical, urgent voice spoke over the crackle of static. "Is this Grant Whitmore?"

Grant shot to his feet, his adrenaline spiking instantly. "Yes! Yes, this is Grant. Who is this?"

"Mr. Whitmore, this is the charge nurse at Bassett Medical Center in Cooperstown. We have a patient admitted to our labor and delivery unit—Hannah Whitmore. She presented two hours ago with severe preeclampsia and signs of placental abruption. Her blood pressure is dangerously elevated, and she is being prepped for an emergency Cesarean section."

The room spun around Grant. "Is she... are they okay?"

"The baby is in distress, Mr. Whitmore," the nurse said, her voice dropping all formalities. "You are still listed as her legal next-of-kin in the national medical registry. If you want to see your wife and son alive, you need to get here immediately."
