Chapter 3 - The Woman Who Knew Too MuchDominic moved the baby to a private clinic.

He trusted hospitals less after the nanny's murder.

I didn't blame him.

I also didn't understand why I was still there.

Maybe because the baby needed someone.

Maybe because every time I looked at him, I remembered Leo.

Or maybe because I sensed something deeply wrong.

The baby's name was Adrian.

Three weeks old.

No mother.

No reliable caregiver.

And apparently, someone wanted him dead.

I stayed beside his bassinet while Dominic took calls.

He was constantly surrounded by men.

Yet somehow, he seemed alone.

At three in the morning, Adrian woke.

I lifted him.

He settled against my chest.

Dominic watched.

"How do you know what to do?"

"I studied nursing."

"You quit."

"Yes."

"Why?"

I looked at Adrian.

"My son died."

Dominic didn't push.

That surprised me.

Instead, he sat across from me.

"My wife wasn't supposed to die either."

I looked up.

"Tell me."

He hesitated.

"Her name was Sofia."

His voice softened.

"She had complications after delivery."

"Was she sick?"

"No."

"Then what happened?"

"The doctor said she suddenly collapsed."

I frowned.

"Suddenly?"

"That's what I was told."

Something about the way he said it bothered me.

"Which hospital?"

He told me.

I remembered the name.

"That hospital had a malpractice investigation three years ago."

Dominic stared.

"How do you know?"

"I studied there."

"What investigation?"

"A medication error involving postpartum patients."

His face changed.

"Are you saying someone killed my wife?"

"I'm saying you should investigate."

The next day, Dominic did.

Within hours, he learned that Sofia's medical chart had been altered after her death.

One medication had been removed.

A nurse's signature had been forged.

And the attending physician had resigned six months later.

Then came another discovery.

Sofia had been pregnant with twins.

Dominic knew only about Adrian.

The second baby had supposedly been lost early.

But the records didn't match.

Dominic became silent.

"Where is the other baby?" I asked.

He looked at me.

"I don't know."

That question haunted us.

Meanwhile, Adrian grew stronger.

He began feeding normally.

His breathing stabilized.

And something unexpected happened.

Dominic started changing.

Not completely.

He still terrified everyone.

But he stopped shouting at his men.

He learned how to warm bottles.

He learned which blanket Adrian liked.

He learned that babies didn't respond to intimidation.

One evening, I walked into the nursery and found him holding his son.

He was humming.

Badly.

I smiled.

"You sound terrible."

Dominic looked offended.

"My son likes it."

Adrian yawned.

"He's being polite."

Dominic actually laughed.

It was the first time I'd heard him laugh.

Then his phone rang.

His smile vanished.

He answered.

"Speak."

He listened.

"Where?"

His eyes met mine.

"The hospital where Sofia died."

"What happened?"

"They found another body."

My stomach tightened.

"Who?"

"The doctor who signed Sofia's death certificate."

Dominic handed Adrian to me.

"I'm going."

"Don't."

He stopped.

"This is a trap."

"I know."

"Then why are you going?"

"Because someone wants me to."

I stared at him.

"You don't have to prove you're fearless."

He looked at me.

"I'm not afraid for myself."

His eyes dropped to his son.

"I'm afraid for him."

Something shifted inside me.

The feared mafia boss wasn't fearless.

He was terrified.

Terrified of losing the last piece of the woman he loved.

I touched his arm.

"Then don't go alone."

He looked surprised.

"I'm coming."

"No."

"You need someone who understands medical evidence."

"I said no."

I crossed my arms.

"Then don't ask me to stay with your son while you walk into a trap."

He stared at me.

Then smiled faintly.

"You argue like my wife."

"She sounds smart."

"She was."

We left together.

Neither of us realized the trap wasn't waiting at the hospital.

It was already inside Dominic's organization.
