Chapter 7 - THE HELICOPTERThe helicopter lifted from the Harrow mansion at 12:19 a.m.

Grant sat opposite Maya.

Eleanor beside him.

Sophie beside Maya.

Evelyn had been left behind.

Nathan might be dying.

Maya refused to think about that.

Below them, Beverly Hills became a grid of gold.

Grant watched Maya.

“You look like me when you’re angry.”

“I’ll try to recover.”

Eleanor almost smiled.

Grant didn’t.

Sophie leaned close to Maya.

“Do you have a plan?”

“No.”

“That’s reassuring.”

“I’m a maid, Sophie. I usually have advance notice before billionaire kidnappings.”

Sophie almost laughed.

Grant looked over.

“Something funny?”

Maya smiled.

“You.”

Grant’s jaw tightened.

Good.

Angry men made mistakes.

Maya studied the cabin.

Pilot.

One guard.

Eleanor.

Grant.

Four threats.

Then she noticed Sophie’s hand.

The girl was slowly removing a hairpin.

Maya looked at her.

Sophie raised one eyebrow.

Nathan’s eyebrow.

Definitely his daughter.

The helicopter flew toward downtown Los Angeles.

Grant’s phone rang.

He answered.

His expression changed.

“What?”

Pause.

“No.”

Another pause.

“Find Cole.”

Maya’s heart jumped.

Nathan was alive.

Grant hung up.

Maya smiled.

“He escaped?”

Grant slapped her.

Sophie lunged.

Maya grabbed her.

“Don’t.”

Grant stared.

Maya slowly turned her face back.

A red mark spread across her cheek.

“You know what’s interesting?”

Grant said nothing.

“For someone who controls everyone, you’re having a terrible night.”

Eleanor laughed.

Grant turned on her.

“You think this is funny?”

“I think you’ve always lacked composure.”

“You created this.”

“I created you.”

“And Nathan.”

Eleanor’s smile vanished.

Grant leaned forward.

“You always loved him more.”

Maya saw it.

There.

Not greed.

Not power.

The wound beneath everything.

Grant Harrow hated Nathan because Nathan was the brother his mother had hidden.

The son she had idealized.

Eleanor replied quietly.

“I loved what Nathan could have become.”

“And me?”

“You became exactly what I trained you to be.”

Grant stared at her.

For the first time Maya almost pitied him.

Almost.

Then Grant smiled.

“And tonight I surpass you.”

The helicopter descended onto a skyscraper.

Harrow Financial Center.

Grant’s true fortress.

They were taken downstairs.

Seventy floors.

Then below ground.

A biometric vault waited beneath the building.

Two hand scanners.

MAYA.

SOPHIE.

Grant pushed them forward.

“Hands.”

Neither moved.

Eleanor raised her gun.

Maya placed her palm on the scanner.

Sophie followed.

The vault opened.

Inside was one terminal.

Eleanor entered a password.

Evelyn’s face appeared on screen.

Recorded years ago.

“If you are watching this, Grant found the vault.”

Grant stared.

Evelyn continued.

“Or perhaps Eleanor did.”

Eleanor’s expression tightened.

“The system requires two bloodline confirmations. But before Orpheus opens, both users must independently consent.”

Two buttons appeared.

RELEASE.

DESTROY.

Grant pointed his gun at Maya.

“Release.”

Maya looked at Sophie.

Sophie whispered, “If we refuse?”

“We die.”

“Probably.”

Sophie swallowed.

“Great family.”

Maya smiled faintly.

“Welcome.”

Grant screamed:

“PRESS IT!”

Maya pressed RELEASE.

Sophie did too.

The terminal processed.

Then:

SECONDARY AUTHORIZATION REQUIRED.

Grant frowned.

“Whose?”

Evelyn’s recording smiled.

“The witness.”

Nathan’s face appeared.

Grant went white.

Maya stared.

Nathan Cole.

The system required him.

Eleanor whispered, “Evelyn…”

Grant shot the screen.

Sparks exploded.

“WHERE IS HE?”

A voice came from the doorway.

“Behind you.”

Grant turned.

Nathan stood there.

Barely.

Blood-soaked bandages wrapped his shoulder and thigh.

Celeste supported him.

Ruth sat in a stolen security wheelchair behind them.

And half a dozen federal agents aimed weapons into the room.

Maya nearly cried.

Nathan looked at her swollen cheek.

His expression became murderous.

“Who hit you?”

Maya pointed at Grant.

Nathan started forward.

Celeste grabbed him.

“You can barely stand.”

“I only need one leg.”

Maya laughed despite herself.

Grant grabbed Sophie.

Gun to her head.

Everyone froze.

Nathan’s face changed.

“Let her go.”

Grant smiled.

“You want your daughter?”

“Yes.”

“Then destroy Orpheus.”

Nathan stared.

Every crime could disappear.

Including his.

Freedom.

His daughter.

A life he had never believed he could have.

Grant whispered:

“Choose.”

Nathan looked at Sophie.

She was crying.

“Dad…”

It was the first time she called him that.

Nathan nearly broke.

Then Sophie said:

“Release it.”

Celeste closed her eyes.

Nathan whispered, “Sophie.”

“You said people died.”

“Yes.”

“You said you should pay.”

“Yes.”

“Then don’t make me the reason you don’t.”

Nathan stared at his daughter.

Then smiled.

Proud.

Devastated.

“Okay.”

Grant screamed.

Nathan slammed his palm onto the authorization pad.

ORPHEUS RELEASED.

Across the world, servers activated.

Files flooded newsrooms.

Federal agencies.

Courts.

Journalists.

Victims’ families.

Grant Harrow’s empire became public in eleven seconds.

Grant fired.

Nathan threw himself forward.

The bullet missed Sophie.

Federal agents fired.

Grant fell.

Alive.

Shot through the shoulder.

Eleanor dropped her weapon.

For the first time, the old woman looked defeated.

Nathan collapsed beside Sophie.

She caught him.

“Dad!”

He looked up.

“You called me Dad.”

“You’re bleeding!”

“Still counts.”

“You’re an idiot.”

“Also hereditary.”

Maya dropped beside them.

Nathan looked at her.

“You okay?”

“You were shot twice.”

“That wasn’t my question.”

Maya nodded.

“Yes.”

Nathan smiled.

Then unconsciousness took him.

Sophie screamed for a medic.

Agents rushed forward.

Maya sat on the vault floor.

Ruth reached her.

Maya buried her face against the woman who had raised her.

For several seconds she was five years old again.

Safe.

Then Evelyn entered.

She stopped at the doorway.

Maya looked up.

Two mothers.

One who gave her life.

One who gave her a life.

Evelyn didn’t approach.

She understood she had not earned that.

Maya appreciated it.

Then an agent looked at the terminal.

His face changed.

“Wait.”

Everyone turned.

“What?” Celeste asked.

The agent stared at the screen.

“Orpheus released everything.”

Nathan’s criminal history.

Grant’s.

Eleanor’s.

Thousands of names.

But one folder had opened automatically.

A video file.

Dated eighteen years earlier.

Celeste went pale.

“No.”

Sophie looked at her.

“Mom?”

Celeste whispered:

“Turn it off.”

The video began.

A hospital room.

A newborn baby.

Celeste crying.

Eleanor standing beside her.

And Grant entering.

Grant looked at the infant.

Then said:

“Nathan can never know she survived.”

Sophie stopped breathing.

Nathan, barely conscious, opened his eyes.

The video continued.

Celeste whispered:

“You promised you wouldn’t hurt her.”

Grant answered:

“I won’t.”

He smiled.

“I’m going to raise her.”

Nathan stared at Celeste.

“You knew Grant knew?”

Celeste was crying.

“Yes.”

“Why?”

“He threatened you.”

Nathan looked shattered.

Celeste whispered:

“He said if I told you Sophie existed, he would kill you.”

Nathan laughed bitterly.

“He tried anyway.”

Then the video showed something else.

Eleanor lifted newborn Sophie.

She examined the child’s hospital bracelet.

And replaced it.

With another.

Maya stared.

“What did she just do?”

Ruth went pale.

Evelyn whispered:

“No.”

Sophie looked between them.

“What?”

Evelyn walked toward the screen.

She froze the frame.

Two infant bracelets.

Two names.

SOPHIE CELESTE HARROW.

And:

EMILY ROSE COLE.

Nathan stopped breathing.

Celeste whispered:

“I only had one baby.”

Evelyn looked at Eleanor.

“Then whose baby did you switch her with?”

Eleanor smiled.

May you like

And said:

“My granddaughter wasn’t the only child born that night.”
