Chapter 8 - Ambush on the Coastal Road

The morning trip to Providence began smoothly.

Sera wore a soft ivory trench coat over a sage-green silk dress, her hair pinned up elegantly. Sitting beside Damen in the back of the armored sedan, she looked radiant—a woman stepping back into the light of her own life, claiming her inheritance with her head held high.

The signing at the Providence Trust Bank took less than forty minutes. When the notary pressed the embossed gold seal onto the final deed, Sera let out a long, quiet breath.

"It's yours," Damen said, watching her hand trace her maiden name on the document. "All of it. Legally protected. Untouchable."

"Thank you, Damen," she whispered, her eyes shining with quiet tears of gratitude.

They stopped for lunch at a secluded restaurant overlooking the marina. For an hour, they spoke about simple things: the garden, the books she wanted to order for the library, the restoration of the seaside cottage in Maine. For a brief, shining moment, the violent shadows of their world seemed miles away.

At 2:30 P.M., Marcus brought the car around to the front of the restaurant.

"Clear route back to the estate, boss," Marcus reported quietly as Damen held the door open for Sera. "Highway traffic is light."

Damen nodded, climbing in beside her. The sedan pulled out onto Route 1A, the scenic coastal highway winding along the rocky bluffs that separated Providence from the southern coastline. Behind them, a second SUV carrying three of Damen’s security detail followed at a discrete two-car distance.

Ten miles outside the city, the coastal road narrowed, hugging the cliffs with the jagged granite shore fifty feet below on the left and dense pine forest on the right.

"Marcus," Damen said suddenly, his voice instantly sharp.

Marcus’s eyes flicked to the rearview mirror. "I see them."

Behind their tail car, a heavy commercial flatbed tow truck had pulled onto the two-lane road from a gravel access path, accelerating aggressively. Simultaneously, a reinforced black pickup truck surged out from a blind bend ahead, swerving across the double yellow lines directly into their oncoming lane.

"Hold on!" Marcus shouted, slamming his foot down on the gas and wrenching the wheel.

The pickup truck struck the front quarter-panel of Damen’s armored sedan with a deafening screech of tearing metal and shattering safety glass. The sedan spun 180 degrees, tires smoking and shrieking against the wet asphalt, before grinding to a halt against the steel guardrail overlooking the cliffs.

Behind them, the commercial flatbed violently T-boned the trailing security SUV, flipping Damen's backup vehicle into the ditch and pinning it beneath tons of twisted steel.

"Sera! Down!" Damen roared, lunging across the backseat, covering her entire body with his own as the first volley of automatic gunfire shattered the rear window.

The armored glass spider-webbed violently, holding together under the assault but clouding over with impact craters.

Sera screamed, her hands clutching Damen’s shoulders in sheer terror. The nightmare had come to life in broad daylight.

"Marcus! Status!" Damen barked, drawing a customized 9mm semi-automatic pistol from his shoulder holster.

"Driver's side axle is snapped, boss!" Marcus shouted, already kicking his door open and returning fire through the gap with his sidearm. "Four shooters! Body armor, tactical gear! They aren't local!"

Through the starred glass of the side window, Damen saw the men advancing. Professional killers, moving in flanking formation, firing suppression rounds to keep Marcus pinned while two others moved toward the rear doors with crowbars and tactical shotguns.

And standing fifty yards back, leaning against a dark rental sedan, was Grant Whitaker.

He was holding a pistol, his face pale and contorted with hysteria, shouting orders over the gunfire: "Get her out! Drag her out! Kill Voss!"

"Damen..." Sera sobbed beneath him, trembling uncontrollably. "He's going to kill you... he's here for me..."

Damen looked down into her terrified eyes. His face wasn't frightened; it was a mask of cold, lethal calculation.

"Look at me, Sera," he said, his voice cutting through the gunfire like steel through ice.

She forced her eyes to meet his.

"Nobody takes you from me," Damen said. "Stay flat on this floor. Keep your hands over your head. Do not look up until I open this door."

Before she could answer, Damen kicked the damaged rear door open with terrifying force, slamming the heavy steel edge into the chest of the first advancing gunman.
