Chapter 7 - The Empire He Never Wanted

Dante disappeared for three days.

Not physically.

He remained in Chicago, surrounded by lawyers, investigators and federal agents.

But the man Elena had come to know retreated somewhere unreachable.

Everything he believed about his family had collapsed.

His father had wanted out.

Sofia had died trying to expose the truth.

And Dante had spent seven years preserving the empire their killers wanted.

On the fourth night, Elena found him alone in his father’s old study.

“What happens now?”

“I end it.”

She sat opposite him.

“The criminal side?”

“All of it.”

“Can you?”

“Yes.”

His expression was grim.

“But not without consequences.”

“Meaning?”

“Men who depend on the old structure will resist. Rivals will see weakness. Federal investigators will want everything.”

“And you?”

“What about me?”

“What do you want?”

Nobody had asked him that in years.

Elena could tell.

“I don’t know.”

“That’s allowed.”

“Not in my world.”

“Then maybe you need another world.”

He looked at her.

“Come with me.”

The words surprised them both.

“Where?”

“I don’t care.”

Elena smiled faintly.

“That sounds suspiciously romantic.”

“I can make it less romantic.”

“Please don’t.”

His expression softened.

Then Elena’s smile disappeared.

“But first, you need to finish this.”

Dante nodded.

Vittorio’s prosecution became public two weeks later.

So did the Harlow financial scandal.

The story consumed Chicago.

Charles Harlow faced charges connected to fraud, conspiracy, obstruction, and Sofia’s death. Vittorio faced far worse.

Vivien accepted a cooperation agreement.

She and Marcus separated.

Not dramatically.

Not with screaming.

Marcus simply moved into a hotel.

One afternoon he asked Elena to meet him.

She almost refused.

Then she decided there were ghosts she no longer wanted to carry.

They met in a coffee shop.

Marcus looked different without the polished certainty.

“I owe you an apology.”

“You owe several.”

“Yes.”

He smiled sadly.

“I loved you.”

Elena said nothing.

“I did. But I loved the version of myself I got to be with Vivien more.”

“That sounds accurate.”

“I was insecure.”

“That doesn’t excuse what you did.”

“I know.”

He looked down.

“My mother made me feel like choosing you meant choosing a smaller life.”

Elena almost laughed.

“And?”

“I discovered the opposite.”

Silence.

“I’m sorry.”

This time she believed him.

“I forgive you.”

His eyes lifted.

“But I don’t want you back.”

“I know.”

“And forgiving you doesn’t mean what you did was acceptable.”

“I know that too.”

Marcus nodded.

Then noticed the ring on her finger.

Not Sofia’s diamond.

A simple gold band.

His eyebrows rose.

“Elena?”

She smiled.

“Not yet.”

Dante had given it to her without asking anything.

No proposal.

No performance.

Just a promise that if he ever asked again, it would be real.

Marcus laughed softly.

“He loves you.”

Elena looked through the window.

Dante waited across the street beside a black car, pretending not to watch.

“Yes.”

She finally understood that he did.

That evening, however, everything changed again.

Dante received a package.

No return address.

Inside was a photograph.

Elena leaving the coffee shop.

A red circle had been drawn around her head.

Beneath it:

THE SALVATORE EMPIRE DOESN’T END BECAUSE YOU’RE IN LOVE.

Dante immediately doubled security.

Elena found him loading a handgun.

“No.”

He looked at her.

“No what?”

“You’re doing it again.”

“Doing what?”

“Becoming the man Vittorio trained you to be.”

“Someone threatened you.”

“And your solution is to hunt them alone?”

“My solution is to keep you alive.”

“My solution is to stop letting fear decide everything.”

“Elena—”

She took the gun from his hand and placed it on the table.

“Who sent the photograph?”

“We don’t know.”

“Then find out intelligently.”

His phone rang.

Security.

They had identified the photographer.

Not a rival.

Not one of Vittorio’s men.

Patricia Aldridge.

Elena stared at the report.

“Marcus’s mother?”

Dante frowned.

“It doesn’t fit.”

They drove to Patricia’s mansion.

The front door was unlocked.

Inside, furniture had been overturned.

Patricia sat in the dining room.

Terrified.

“I didn’t send anything.”

Dante placed the photograph before her.

“You hired the photographer.”

“Yes.”

“Why?”

Patricia looked at Elena.

“Because I thought she was having an affair with Marcus.”

Elena nearly laughed.

“You had me followed?”

“I was protecting my son.”

“From what? Accountability?”

Patricia ignored her.

“I paid the investigator to photograph them. But I never received this image.”

“Who was the investigator?”

She gave them the name.

Dante’s face changed.

Elena noticed.

“You know him.”

“He worked for Vittorio.”

Patricia paled.

“He said he was independent.”

Dante’s phone rang.

Then another.

Then another.

Across Chicago, three former Salvatore properties were burning.

A coordinated attack.

And every television station had received an anonymous message.

DANTE SALVATORE BETRAYED HIS FAMILY.

The old organization was rebelling.

Dante looked at Elena.

“This is going to become a war.”

Elena took his hand.

“No.”

“What?”

“You’re going to make it something they don’t understand.”

May you like

“And what is that?”

“A surrender.”
