Chapter 6 - THE FATHER WHO NEVER CAME HOMEFor several seconds, Emma could not move.

Ten years of grief stood in front of her.
Alive.
Older.
Broken.
But alive.
Jack Caldwell opened his arms.
Emma slapped him.
The sound cracked through the room.
Dante looked away.
Jack did not defend himself.
Emma struck his chest again.
“You were alive.”
“I know.”
“You were alive!”
Then she collapsed against him.
Jack held her while she cried with the anger of a child who had spent half her life believing her father was underground.
“I’m sorry.”
“You don’t get to be sorry.”
“I know.”
“You missed everything.”
“I know.”
“Mom died believing you were dead.”
That broke him.
Jack closed his eyes.
“I know.”
Emma pulled away.
“Why?”
Jack looked toward Dante.
“Because Carlo told me if I ever contacted either of you, he’d kill Emma.”
“And after Carlo died?”
“Isabella found me first.”
Dante stepped forward.
“What does my mother want?”
Jack studied him.
“To destroy what your father built.”
“Why?”
“Because Carlo destroyed her first.”
The story was uglier than any of them expected.
Years earlier, Isabella had discovered Carlo laundering money through companies registered in her name. When she threatened to expose him, Carlo arranged evidence suggesting Isabella was mentally unstable and dangerous.
He intended to institutionalize her.
Thomas helped her escape.
She staged her death.
But survival turned into obsession.
Isabella spent years collecting evidence against Carlo.
Then Carlo died before she could confront him publicly.
Her revenge had nowhere to go.
So she redirected it.
Toward his empire.
Toward everyone who had protected him.
Including her own son.
“She thinks you became Carlo,” Jack told Dante.
Dante’s expression darkened.
“I’m not my father.”
“No,” Jack said. “But you inherited his throne.”
Emma looked at Dante.
For the first time she understood something important.
Dante had inherited more than power.
He had inherited accusations for sins committed before he understood them.
“What does Isabella want from me?” Emma asked.
Jack looked at the red folder.
“The ledger is incomplete.”
Emma frowned.
Jack walked to the wall and removed one photograph.
Behind it was a safe.
Inside was a flash drive.
“This contains the missing transactions.”
Emma stared.
“Why didn’t you release them?”
“Because they would destroy innocent people too.”
Carlo had deliberately mixed legitimate pensions, employee accounts and charitable foundations with criminal funds.
Expose everything recklessly, and thousands of innocent employees could lose jobs or savings.
Jack had spent years trying to separate the clean businesses from the corrupt network.
“Did you finish?”
“Almost.”
A gunshot shattered the window.
Dante moved instantly.
He dragged Emma and Jack down.
More shots followed.
Dante’s security returned fire.
Jack looked toward the rear exit.
“Isabella.”
They escaped through an underground service tunnel.
But halfway through, Jack stopped.
“What?”
Emma followed his stare.
A woman stood at the far end.
Silver hair.
Black coat.
Perfect posture.
Isabella Moretti.
Dante froze.
Twenty years disappeared from his face.
“Mom.”
Isabella looked at him.
“My beautiful boy.”
Dante took one step forward.
Then stopped.
“You’re trying to kill us.”
“Not you.”
“You shot at a room I was standing in.”
“I knew you would survive.”
Emma muttered, “Mother of the year.”
Isabella almost smiled.
“You’re Jack’s daughter.”
“Unfortunately for your people, yes.”
Isabella extended her hand.
“Give me the drive.”
“No.”
“Your father has spent ten years hiding because of this family.”
“Because of Carlo.”
“Carlo was this family.”
Dante stepped between them.
“No. He wasn’t.”
Isabella looked at her son.
“You still don’t understand.”
“I understand enough.”
“You inherited everything.”
“And I can choose what I do with it.”
Isabella’s expression hardened.
“You sound like him.”
“Jack?”
“No.”
She looked directly at Emma.
“Your father.”
Emma realized Isabella was no longer speaking to Dante.
She was speaking to her.
Jack stepped forward.
“Isabella, stop.”
“You always believed people could be redeemed, Jack.”
“Some can.”
“Carlo couldn’t.”
“He’s dead.”
“His empire isn’t.”
Dante’s men approached from behind.
Isabella stepped backward.
Before disappearing, she looked at Emma.
“Ask your father who was driving the car the night he supposedly died.”
Emma turned toward Jack.
His face changed.
“Dad?”
Isabella smiled.
Then vanished into the darkness.
Emma stared at her father.
“Who was driving?”
Jack said nothing.
“Dad.”
Finally he answered.
“Your mother.”
Emma felt the ground shift beneath her.
“My mother was in the crash?”
Jack nodded.
“She wasn’t supposed to be.”
“What happened to her?”
Jack looked devastated.
“She survived too.”
Emma stopped breathing.
“No.”
“She survived the crash, Emma.”
“Then where is she?”
Jack lowered his eyes.
“Isabella took her.”
And suddenly Emma understood why her father had remained hidden for ten years.
May you like
He had not only been protecting Emma.
He had been searching for his wife.
