Chapter 11 - The Sudden Eclipse

The following evening.

The Metropolitan Museum of Art was bathed in amber floodlights for the annual Vance Foundation Gala—the most exclusive, high-stakes gathering of global power brokers in the world.

There were no banquet waitresses being harassed tonight. Delia Ford stood near the grand entrance in an elegant emerald evening gown, overseeing a security and hospitality team that operated with the precision of a Swiss watch.

The grand doors opened, and the room went completely still.

Nicholas Vance entered the hall in an immaculate bespoke tuxedo. At his side, draped in a breathtaking midnight-blue velvet gown with an exposed back that showed no trace of fear, walked Iris Vance. Around her neck sat the Miller Diamond—her father’s legacy, worth more than the entire net worth of the Sterling family combined.

The press gallery exploded into a blinding frenzy of camera flashes. The whispers rippled through the billionaires, senators, and foreign ambassadors:

*"That's her."*

*"The woman from the ballroom video..."*

*"She isn't a waitress. She’s the co-founder of the Vance Architecture."*

Arthur Sterling was not there; his firm had declared Chapter 11 at noon. Bianca Sterling was currently in a county holding cell, her bail denied due to flight-risk evidence provided by Iris’s forensics.

Iris and Nicholas glided up the grand marble staircase toward the podium where Nicholas was scheduled to announce the full acquisition and restructuring of the regional banking sector.

Iris took Nicholas’s arm, leaning in close. "You handled the press well," she murmured, a confident, radiant smile gracing her lips.

Nicholas looked down at her, his eyes filled with profound admiration and love. "You own this room, Iris. You always did."

They reached the top landing before the microphones. The entire room stood up, applauding—a standing ovation from the most powerful figures on Earth, acknowledging the undisputed reign of Nicholas and Iris Vance.

Nicholas stepped toward the podium. He adjusted the microphone, looking out at the sea of applauding elites.

Suddenly, the massive crystal chandeliers overhead flickered violently.

Once. Twice.

Then, every light in the grand museum went pitch black.

The emergency backup generators did not kick in. The silence in the cavernous hall was instantaneous and terrifying.

In the total darkness, the synchronized *chime* of three hundred smartphones rang out simultaneously across the room—a shrill, high-priority emergency alert tone that made blood run cold.

Iris felt Nicholas’s arm wrap around her waist instantly, pulling her behind his chest in the dark.

"Nick?" Iris whispered, her hand instinctively reaching for the inside pocket of his tuxedo. "What is that?"

In the darkness, Nicholas’s phone illuminated his face. The screen did not show a news alert or a stock crash. It showed a single, live camera feed from inside their private estate's vault ten miles away.

The heavy steel vault door was wide open.

And painted in crimson across the mirrored wall inside was a single sentence:

*THE ARCHITECT IS STILL ALIVE.*

Nicholas’s breath hitched in his throat. His fingers tightened around Iris’s waist with a sudden, desperate tremor she had never felt in him before.

He leaned down to her ear, his voice barely a terrified whisper:

"Iris... your father wasn't in that car."
